P Major

P-Major -- Interviewed By: RMotions

So can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is P-Major and independent hip-hop artist born and raised in Money Making Manhattan. My parents are from Haiti so I’ve got that Caribbean blood flowing in me. Right now I’m repping for the Haitian nation and looking to join my boy Wycleff in the movement to better the community.
I love Hip-hop and I’m hungry to make my mark in the game. For years people have told me I’ve got what it takes to be a rap star, but I waited until I felt it before I started shopping my demo. I have No manager because I haven’t met one that I trust with my career. Trust is important to me. I’ve been marketing and promoting myself for over a year now. I think I’m one of the most versatile rappers out here and one of New York’s best kept secrets. I believe that with the right backing I could be the next big thing to hit Hip-hop music. I’ve got a few labels hallahing at me, but I’m not feeling the deals their throwing at me. Their underestimating me and being underestimated only fuels me to work harder. As hungry as I am to get my career going I will not sign a deal unless it’s right! That’s what’s up!

How did you get the name P-Major?
There’s no real story behind it. I made it up myself. At first I was going with Major, but I felt it sounded too arrogant. I toned it down a little by adding the P which represents the first letter in my last name. I wanted my name to represent my potential. I got big plans for myself.

I see your an independent artist, how do you feel the come-up
from an independent artist to signing a major are different?

There’s positives and negative too both routes. I think the only real differences are the fact that with a major label you might have more financial backing ( money you must pay back of course) and more experience managers around you. That kind of backing help you reach the masses. It’s all about being heard. The more that hear you the more that might buy your CD. An independent artist could go so far. The good thing is that an independent artist could see more money if his operation is tight.

I read somewhere that you have a family and that you hold down a
9-5 to support them. Most artists will never admit to that
I think that their public persona will not allow them to be
considered an average man when it’s the average man that buys
their products. Do you feel that this should have been shadowed?

Hell no, people respect real artist. In life your family should always come first. I don’t see why I would be ashamed to let my fans know that. I figure they would respect me for that. I’m no god, I’m just like anyone other person out here with bills and responsibilities. I would hope that a story like mines would inspire people to better their lives. They would say, “P-Major’s a regular guy and now he’s blowing up...if he could do it so could I”. Everyone’s got a hidden talent inside of them, if you focus you could capitalize on it.

So when did you start your love for Hip-hop?
Hip-hop and I go way back to 80’s when I was a kid break dancing and battling dudes at every party we went to. My older cousin Steve was a tape DJ and he bought every hip-hop tape out there. He use to bang out a new mix-tape every week. I use to be up in his crib everyday chilling and bobbing my head hard to some new EPMD or Nice & Smooth.

With so many comparisons between you and Wycleff, do you feel that the public will expect the same vibe in the music that Wycleff makes?

Yea, mostly because we’re both Haitian. Sure your going to hear some Caribbean influence or records on my CD, but that’s because it’s in my blood and that’s what I’m repping. I think with a P-Major CD your going to get a combination of great songs and find something for everyone. If you ask me Wycleff and I have two different styles of music.

Who is majority rulez? and what’s the plan with them?
Majority Rulez is the name of my team of artist. There’s four of us including myself. There’s my brother Snap-Shot, JusRite, and a reggae artist called Lyrikal. You could see them all on www.P-Major.com.
It’s kind of like a G-Unit or Wu-Tang Clan. I have big plans for the team. Currently we’re finishing our 2nd Mix-CD “Majority Rulez the Streetz Vol. 2” and once I get on I’ll be looking to get them all signed.

With more and more artists diving into alternative means of
making money, do you deal with more businesses other than your
music career?

Absolutely, especially do to the fact that I have no real manager on paper. I’m always caught up in the business side of things. It’s all good though because you learn more about the game. I’ve got a College Degree in Marketing and Sales so I’m educated enough to handle the business it. Once things start getting hectic then I’ll find a manager I could trust to help me out.

Do you feel that street credibility encourages violence or that
it is this distinction that makes these individuals stories more
acceptable to the public?

I think it might encourage violence if dudes misinterpret it.
A lot of cats think that you have to be some thugged-out killer or drug dealer to get street credibility when that’s not necessarily the case. All you have to do is achieve a credible action to get respect. In my book Martin Luther King has the most street creditability because he was out there on the streets representing non-violence and a positive movement. If people interpreted it like that our communities would be straight.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to continue develop as an artist, continue to make hit records, and to hopefully be able to put an album out through a trust worthy and reliable source. I want to be heard by the masses. We’ve got a few big shows coming up, one in May opening up for Wycleff and Beanie Man and one in Miami. It’s all about exposure and the more I get the better.
