Sean Price

Interviewed by: Dirty Backpacks

Read our Review of Sean Price's Album Monkey Barz

First off, I wanna say we here at Hiphophavoc are big fans of you, Heltah Skeltah, and the whole Boot Camp Clique. With that being said, how did this 1st solo album Monkey Barz come about?

It came about through frustration, anger, depleted funds and a diverse array of emotions.

Why did you choose to name the album Monkey Barz?

Why not? The shit is hot and I run wit apes and gorillaz all day.

Most fans know you as one half of the incomparable duo Heltah Skeltah. Was it tough to do an album primarily on your own without Rock?

Nah, it was easier - I didn't have to answer to nobody I did me. I didn't miss him at all!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of people have been wondering for a long time, so I’mma get right to it – are things cool with you and Rock? Is he still a part of the Boot Camp Clique?

For the last time – YES, me and Rock are cool, and YES he's Boot Camp FOR LIFE!!!!!

Well, will there be another Heltah Skeltah album? And will you release any more solo albums? Are there any solo albums in Rock’s plans?

Yes, we working on a LP right now, but don't get it twisted - Sean Price is solo for life.

Let’s switch gears. One of your most famous catchphrases is that you’re “the brokest rapper you know”. After all those shows you’ve done in your career, two Heltah Skeltah albums, a solo, and numerous guest appearances, can that really be true?

Hell yeah that could be true, who would lie about being broke?

Talk to me about the guests on the album and the producers.

As far as producers go, I got 9th Wonder and Khyrsis on the LP, and Ty Dealz - he produced "The Brokest Rapper You Know" and the title track. I also got my man PF Cuttin, and my man Tone Mason from Toronto. As far as guest stars go, all the Boot Camp family.

We heard you on the remix to the Destiny’s Child track “Girls”. How did that come about?

A gathering of the minds. Greg Burke hollered at Dru Ha with the idea, Dru hollered at me, I layed it down, got the blessing from 9th and ran with it. Peace to mainstream radio and Destiny's Child.

What do you have coming up in the near future? Any tour plans? Any more guest spots? Collabos?

Yes, and then some!

I always like to ask this question when I’m talking to an MC I respect – who are you feeling in the Hip Hop game right now? And who or what about the game would you say is wack?

Every new MC that I hear is wack! I hear nothing that’s fresh, and if they keep signing shit like that the whole rap industry is gonna be trash.

Your mixtape, Donkey Sean, Jr. is an underground masterpiece. Any more mixtape plans?

Thank you! I have a new mixtape and DVD coming out called "Passion Of Price". Look for it in September.

Finally, what do you want the people to know about you and the new album?

Know that I work on my craft daily, and know that I'm the nicest nigga in the game that nobody knows. But if you bought my album then you know that already.

Sean Price, thank you. It’s been a pleasure.

No, thank you - the pleasure was all mine. PEACE.
