HipHopHavoc interviews R&B artist ChesZerae

Interviewed by Omar
1. What's going on with your new single "Epitome of My Man"? What's your inspiration for the song?
I thought it was a very loving song, evoking feelings of appreciation and romance. It's about how love should be portrayed. It came to my mind so I just had to put it in this piece. I'm getting good feedback. So far, it's going well.
2. Is it one of your favorite tracks?
No, it's not one of my favorite tracks. Actually all of my songs are my favorite. But if I had to choose, it would be "Badd Gyrl".
3. Why is "Badd Gyrl" your favorite?
Badd Gyrl is what portrays me. No, I'm not a bad girl literally. But saying bad is a good word actually. It's a saying that reveals my attitude for 2009. I'm simply representing and just keeping it real. I want everyone to feel my energy I'm giving. It's a 2009 theme, but it’s something that's going to carry over pass 2009.
4. Will this be on "Melodic Lust"?
Yes. What's interesting thing about my upcoming album is that a lot of people will be familiar with some of the songs already. But they may be surprised by the different beats for those songs I’ll be composing. It's a mystery until it comes out.
5. How many tracks on the album.
Not exactly sure yet, but expect maybe 11-13.
6. Is it gonna be an EP or a full length album?
I’m looking towards the production of a full length album.
7. What producers are on the album?
So far, I'm working with Ill Gotti from Xth Power Productions, Sinima Beats and Mr. K.A & many others. I'll also be producing most of my album as well.
8. How was it growing up in Harlem? Who were your musical influences?
Harlem is the heart of music and the Arts. He’s [Harlem] treated me like a queen. I looked up to a lot of singers growing up. I was always surrounded by an older crowd. Some of my influences are Prince, Chaka Khan and Whitney Houston, Madonna, Ella Fitzgerald, Mary J. Blige & Sade. Other artists I admire modern-day are Missy Elliot, Brandy, and Alicia Keys. All of them had a strong affect on me. I decided that this is where I'm going to grow and reach out to others: musically and spiritually. And my direction is including elements from those artists into my own particular style of music. I am in the midst of enhancing and tweaking my musical style. Why them? These wonderful artists have taught me: Once you have found your signature, season it.
9. How was it performing in North Carolina, New York City and Connecticut?
It was actually exciting. I didn't do any performances individually, but it was just as rewarding if not more!! I was a member of a few choirs. We traveled throughout several cities, which was nice. It was really fun and we were able to get a lot of exposure and most importantly reach out to others in an uplifting way.
10. What's the difference between being solo and working with a group?
The difference is that when you’re working alone there's a little more work, and anything that goes down you’re definitely accountable for. Working with a group is really interesting because you get to deal with different personalities and different work ethics when it comes to the music industry. On a solo note, you’re still getting a similar feel. You do however, get to make a decision at the end of the day, and basically you are your primary manager.
11. Not only do you sing, but you’re a full-figured model?
Yes, I model from time to time. My reason for doing that is just to set an example for ALL women out there because the average American size is a 14. It's actually beneficial to just be yourself and be happy with your body. Also, I love the camera, smiling and striking a compelling pose. And besides, who can resist looking at a great photograph of ChesZerae? (laughs) But seriously, modeling is more than just smiling and posing, it's about setting an example and expressing inner beauty as a picture is worth 1000 words.
12. How does a person become a member of ASCAP?
You can go to the website and sign up. That website is www.ascap.org
It's up to you; you don't have to deal with ASCAP if you don’t wish to. ASCAP and other organizations such as BMI are responsible for monitoring your stats, such as your tracks being played on terrestrial radio or on-line radio stations. Once you sign up you'll become a member of that organization, and they will give you your royalties once you register with them.
13. How can people get in contact with you?
Beautiful people, you can go to http://www.myspace.com/cheszerae ,follow me on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/cheszerae or you can visit me @ http://www.www.youtube.com .
14. Do you have any advice for aspiring singers?
Yes, I do. Keep your head up, keep your faith and know where you stand. I can't emphasize that enough. Know EXACTLY where you stand. There will be challenges and obstacles that will come your way that will try to alter your style and who you represent. Managers are OPTIONAL. At the end of the day, you are responsible for the turnout of your career. Prepare yourself before joining ANY team. The industry is a dark world, but there are many who have lights to shine! Work up to what you want. Whether it’s go to the very top making platinum, or just to reach out to others at a comfortable level of fame: NEVER GIVE UP! Write that music, release that song you hate the most; you’d be surprised.
15. Shoutouts?
I like to give a shout out to my mommy, Crystal, Lamika, Dontz, Twinny, and Brother Charles. I also want to give a shout out to my most important people that have gotten me to where I am today, my fans and supporters!! I really appreciate everyone, and that’s from the heart. Prosperity, here I come! ChesZerae
