Top 5 HipHop Producers of All Time

What up little kiddies. Its your boy R.Motions back atcha for another round of what I am now dubbing "The top 5: Whatever i can think of." Ha! well anyhow, here at HipHopHavoc.com we have been reading all your comments and I am personally loving it.(100+ and counting). We seem to be headed to another level of discussion. Some people are debating some people are just posting their comment and thats it, but either way I am glad that we are finally moving away from just cursing out others and actually backing what you believe in.

So here we go....

Lets Get into people's top 5 Hip Hop Producers of all time. and people please....its top 5 not 6... its 5....if we were all looking for 6...then the question would have been the top 6 producers, but it aint...honorable mentions are cool...but 5 is what we are looking for. yea you know 5, five, cinco, cinq, fünf,cinque. I think that should cover it...

as usual I will go first and set this joint up.

1. Dj Premier [need i say more]
2. Dr. Dre [need i say more]
3. Marly Marl [To me, he single handedly revolutionized the 80's]
4. Kanye West [in the short time in the game he has come with constant fire]
5. The Neptunes [changed the game completely when they dropped]

Oo, I been waiting for this one!

I'm a bit surprised at R.Motions list. We kind of come from the same school of thought, so it's weird to see that we only have 2 of the same in our respective Top 5s.

The people I've chosen are because of length of time in the game, influence, relevance today, innovations to the game, legacy, and whether they can (or have done it already) branch outside of the world of Hip Hop.

My Top 5 definitive Hip Hop producers of all time:

    1) DJ Premier - No one has ever done it better. A real Hip Hop lover's producer; literally every porducer you could possibly think of naming has been influenced by this guy - INCLUDING Dr. Dre, who is the only person even on his level. The list of who he's worked with, major and non-major, is crazy. Do ya history - his beats are the sickest!

    2) Dr. Dre - I'm not even going to explain this - if you don't know why he's on the list,go cop that Jermaine Dupri CD and call it a day.

    3) Pete Rock - kind of like Primo - another producer who has been crazy innovative and influenced everyone, but doesn't get the notoriety of the self-promoting producers of today. But trust - your favorite producer knows who he is, and more than likely studied him well.

    4) The Rza - How can you NOT put him in yourtop 5? Everyone likes all that sped up soul-sample sh*t - that sh*t that no one even knew about until he did it! Kanye, The Heatmakerz, 9th Wonder, Pharrell, and even Dr. Dre all have taken his example of using old soul hooks and beats, and the whole instance of finding abstract vocal and music samples from various movies and TV shows started with him. Do the knowledge, peoples!

    5) Erick Sermon - Das EFX, Redman, Keith Murray, and more importantly, EPMD? Come on, man. There's at least 20 EPMD beats that cats just stole and rapped over to make monster hits for themselves - 2pac's "California Love" (Dre jacked it), DMX's "Get At Me Dog", and Jigga's "Ain't No Ni99a" are just 3 major examples.

Special Honorable Mentions: The Bomb Squad - Public Enemy AND Ice Cube? These guys changed the game with their hard, deep in your face beats.

The Ummah - Jay Dee, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Q-Tip formed this collective that were responsible for some of the dopest beats of all time - just listen to any Tribe Called Quest album.

yea i hear ya Dirty, but i thought about those producers too, and i was thinking.

pete rock: that first instrumental album he put out was such a waste of cds and electricity. I dont care what anyone says. that album was horrible and his production skills have dimminished in my eyes...get some fire out there and then come talk to me...dont get me wrong, he was a great producer.

    The RZA: see above.

    1. Number one producer of all time has to be Dr. Dre. Dre has completely changed the game twice, one with NWA and now with Fif and Em.

    2. The Alchemist is sick!

    3. DJ Premier is definitely one of the top five of all time!

    4. DJ Quick doens't get the props he deserves but he is a great producer.

I thought you said ALL TIME, Not from the last 5-6 yrs or hot right now! Alot of these list show whats wrong with fans nowadays, you have the memory of a penguin and get caught up in the glory to quick!!

    1. Marly Marl:
you could be from alska or LA if you say that you dont agree you were still a thought when he revolutionized the game and you got some heavy home work to do, seriously!!Any and everyone in the mid 80's and up worked with this guy from Rakim allah to TLC to Jigga...he IS the staple in hip hop no matter what you were brought up on or what you think, the original your favorite producers favorite producer!!!

    2. The Rzarectah:
C'Mon people, Come the fuck on....how could your list even begin with a just blaze or kanye without RZA ahead of them? how? what they do, the ASR 10 sound, the sample SOURCES not just how they sample, it all started with the Wu...actually all of these creative ways to get signed originated with Wu-Tang no matter what your musical taste is or where your from, and RZA was the brainchild on that note. Plus what other producer on YOUR list has the mind frame to score films?
    uh huh...
And another thing, both kanye & blaze have gone on record and credited RZA for their style already so, nuff said...

    3. Dr Dre:
without Dre there is no west coast sound, period point blank. Being that Cali is one of the biggest states in the US thats major, especially when you have been #1 since it all began! Dre is the only cat poppin right now with 50 and Eminem in todays market that gets my 'respect' cause he has evolved and paid the cost. Even when it was all NYC hip hop, Dre's beats alone made niggas go cop niggas 4 life! and the Chronic? no words, thats genius. I always called it LA on wax....also, he has evolved to the level of Interpolation which is beyond looping....a genius

    4. DJ Premier:
I can't think of another cat who has made the art of the turntable more relivant & NOBODY can argue that premo is the sound of hip hop today. His patterns and sequencing had become a must in the mid 90's if you were dropping an album (see illmatic, ready to die, reasonable doubt)cause premo tracks stand out and 9 outta 10 will be the albums best track almost everytime! and that also hurt him in a way cause so many bum niggas started trying to cop his beats (cause there so cheap,10 grand and up) and immulate the Nas's and jiggas his drum became saturated almost instantly (and jay didnt help it either). Also how many producers can cut up an ok song and make a retarded chorus like the god?

    5. Pete rock:
I know you heard jim jones 'G'z up'...how sick is that? versatilty is what he IS and besides his beat choices or whatever instrumental albums he puts out hes always right on top of it just like any other producer I've named. A great producer is always with the moment and can bring it out through music...listen to his catalog, all of his beats are right for the moment even if you dont feel it, cause he got shit I dont always feel but can appreciate cause I can see it. If you never heard of the U.N. cop there joint 'U.N. or U out' it came out a few yrs ago...son did the whole joint...it sounds like trees and MC'ing, real gritty NYC shit all the way to Mecca and the soul brother...that was the sound of New York at that time: Conscious and real. NEVER count out the #1 soul brother...

honorable mentions: any and every prodcuer in the game because they ALL fall after these 5 brothers I just named plus most of them are stuck on their Tritons pressing keys for the next dollar instead of taking us anywhere with their sound. Dre is on some dolby 5.0 sound quality nowadays, RZA is on some DDrums/kurzweil shit loading his ASR-10 sounds...my point is these cats evolved and every cat out nowadays stays stuck so they dont fall off to the next dickrider. And JD has gotta be the grand daddy of them all when it comes to dickriding, he doesnt even deserve to be called a producer! he went from Dre, to puffy and NOW hes dirty south all day cause its hot FINALLY! ha!
I can give it up to the Nottz, and Hi-Teks and havocs, and Jay Dee's, kanye and blaze as well cause they care about there sound, Im done...

Damn, another GREAT topic. Hmmm, this got me thinking because my opinions on producers have changed so much. But here it goes....

1.Dr. Dre- I mean, do I really have to explain this? He can do every type of sound: west coast, east coast, street banga, club banga, sample, sped up, etc.

    2. DJ Premier- damn, this was tough puttin him at 2. But Dre just edge's my man out. He's got the patent sound that still always seems to be fresh.

    3. The Alchemist- now, I know not too many people would put dude this high, but the alchemist has been my favorite beat maker for about 2 years now. His dark, gloomy, atmoshpheric sound is what I love and my type of hip hop.

    4. The Rza- I had to put him here because his beats were the first Ive ever spit over. Yea you know, I like to gets down with my boys in the studio and spit too, and my man Wom put me on to Rza's beats and I've loved them ever since. And he's an originator too, so everyone should respect the cat.

    5. Timbaland- Now, this is a surprise pick from me, but I gotta be real. This man has owned the clubs for a minute!! Im not usually a fan of alot of club bangers, but whenever I hear a beat from this cat, my head is always nodding. I gotta give respect where respect is due, and this man deserves it.

Honarable Mention: Rick Rubin, Pete Rock, Kanye West, and Trackmasters

First of all, Dre is not that great. Yall need to listen to some parliament and zapp and roger. he completely ripped off the hooks and beats from that, completely unoriginal. He WAS key in making the G more public, but he didnt write much of anything himself. Kanye's beats arent great either. what does he do? He speeds samples up, but doesnt changed the hook or melody at all! cmon. The best beat in "late registration" was touch the sky by just blaze! Kanye is not revolutionary. What did he do? He brought the soul back into the game, and thats what we needed.

For real, people cant be puttin in a guy like eminem on the top 5 PRODUCERS of all time, ya'll need to check yourselves and fast. He might be argued as top 5 MC by some and even that would be close

Since alot of people arent in tune with some of the oldschool type cats like marly marl i'll focus on the ones they know best in my opinion the Top 5 Producers are:

    1) DJ Premier - Best that East Coast hip hop has to offer, just brings that constant quality everytime

    2) Dr. Dre - put the west coast on his back on the beats and with the mic in the NWA and Snoop days, G-funk and all that, and has shown the ability to be versatile and not just with the base heavy west coast stuff, look at an album like get rich or die trying, a little different then the chronic but just as on point.

    3) Kanye West - this one is just personal opinion i love the way kanye bringin back the soul aspect to the game, very nice sampling style and has shown the ability to mix well with all different kinds of artist from Mos Def and Talib type cats to even Mobb Deep (before they decided to sign onto the hip hop version of "marketing 101")

    4) RZA - Before all this 50 Cent bonanza and when hip hop was true to its creative form the Wu-Tang represented the east on a street level for years, and the main architect was no doubt the man behind the boards, the Abbott, crazy with those dark style beats, not everyones favorite but a personal choice of mine

    5) Hi-Tek - I dont know man i\m a big fan of Kweli and reflections eternal and all the beats Hi-Tek makes i generally love, he isnt as creative of Pharell maybe but i just dont personally love everyone of Pharells beats as much as others do

Honorable mention: Pharell, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Cool & Dre

Damn, forgot to put timbaland on the list... Same for Havoc, he gotta be mentioned with Pharell and Just Blaze almost top 5 just missed with his grimey style mobb beats, but u didnt know he was the one behind "Why" the piano looped Jada beat did u?

"Alot of these list show whats wrong with fans nowadays, you have the memory of a penguin and get caught up in the glory too quick!!"

Truer words have never been spoken. I don't have a Top 5 list, sadly, but I wish that alot of today's hip hop fans...take at least a moment to realize that there was a "yesterday"...before today.

Once again, the '80s don't exist...meanwhile half of the beats you're banging, right now, will be long forgotten, but once you hear music like "The Bridge is Over" by BDP or "Ain't No Half Steppin'" by Big Daddy Kane, or "Paid in Full" by Eric B. and Rakim, 10-20 yrs. from now...you'll STILL remember that beat, and it'll still have you noddin' your head like it did when you first heard it. Ironic and amazing.

Carry on with your "lists" :)

Alchemist is real, he aint from the hood, yet he is an amazing producer. He's making the Jews a big part of hiphop. Scott Storch is doing his thing too. Dre is at the top right now!
