Reception Scheduled to Honor “Three 6 Mafia”; Academy Award Winners to Receive Key to the City

Memphis, TN … This Saturday, April 1, 2006 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., a VIP reception will be held at the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum honoring Memphis musicians, Sony recording artists, and 2006 Academy Award winners Three 6 Mafia. During the ticketed reception, the group is scheduled to receive presentations from The City of Memphis, the Beale Street Brass Note Committee, and the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum.

Memphis’ own Three 6 Mafia recently made history as the first rap or hip-hop ensemble to be nominated for and win an Academy Award. The group, featuring Jordan (Juicy J) Houston, Cedric (Crunchy Black) Coleman and Paul (DJ Paul) Beauregard, brought home the “Best Original Song” Oscar for their track “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” from the highly-acclaimed motion picture “Hustle & Flow,” which was also filmed in Memphis. A full biography of the group’s incredible musical success is available at www.sonymusic.com/artists/Three6Mafia.

This Saturday’s reception marks the second “Memphis Music Salute” hosted by the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum to pay tribute to Memphis’ musical icons. On March 1, 2006, the museum, whose mission is “to preserve and tell the story of Memphis music and perpetuate its legacy,” honored the legendary BarKays. Following Saturday’s reception, a plaque honoring Three 6 Mafia will join a similar BarKays plaque on permanent display in the museum.

The April 1 reception honoring Three 6 Mafia is being sponsored by the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission, the Memphis Music Foundation, Rum Boogie Café, Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and Pinnacle Airlines. At the event a silent auction will be sponsored by Memphis Charitable Foundation / The Blues Ball. The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum is located at 191 Beale and Third Street at FedExForum.

Get Affiliated With MC Eiht On April 4

MC Eiht’s first album through Paid In Full/Koch, “Affiliated,” will be released on April 4, signifying the Compton rapper’s nineteenth album release. His first enhanced disc, the special product will contain 14 album tracks, exclusive interview footage and a new music video starring MC Eiht, performing the song “Say Nothin.’”
Among the album’s authentic Compton born and bred tracks is the radio single, “CPT’z Bac (159 Remix Featuring CMW),” produced by Raw Steel. The song received an extra kick when it was added into airplay at the legendary Los Angeles radio station KDAY by Julio G.
Throughout “Affiliated,” MC Eiht comes back strapped with his trademark style on new songs like “Where U Frum (Featuring Gangsta Luv of the Road Dawgs).”
“Just Lean” is a laid back track by Chill and DJ Subflo, a drum and bass producer, who is also a well-known rave DJ. Eiht says, “I got down with my man Sub, because I wanted people to know that we got all types of flavors, not just hiphop, but we got all kinds of diversity. So I did this one on the strength of how we lean in Compton.” Eiht acknowledges the track is reminiscent of much of the feel of his classic album with Comptons Most Wanted, “Music To Driveby” because there are a lot of slow grooves on it. “A lot of down South niggas like to hear their stuff slow and screwed and chopped, so that was my focus when I heard the beat; the first thing I thought about was Texas and down South, and how they be chopping and screwing their shit. I wanted for them to get down, because they’ve always been supportive of MC Eiht, and what I do, so I just wanted to throw some of that back."
“Gangsta Minded (Featuring Jaz and Chill)” introduces Jaz, a female rapper. Eiht says, “Chill made the beat, and she wanted to rip it, so we let her get down, and we decided to hop on down there with her. Her flow is tight, and she is real gangsta with it. No fur coats and talking about sex and diamonds, because she’s hood with it. If a female raps, I want to hear her come like me. When she did it, I was amazed. A nigga didn’t have to direct her, or tell her what to write about, because she knows where she was from. On a solo project, it is the first time I ever got down with a female, and she put it down tight.”
The long anticipated track “Smoke This (Featuring Chill and Jayo Felony)” was produced by Silk some time ago, but was never released. Eiht remarks, “It describes what we’re seeing in street rap, gangsta rap right now. At the time we recorded it, people were rapping about happy stuff like partying and chains and planes and stuff. We were expressing our frustration in the music, and we were fed up with people not wanting to deal with the real in their music. Now people are trying to be hard and trying to be where they’re not even from. So it is still just perfect for today.”
Eiht explains the inspiration behind the track “2 Compton MF’z (Featuring Big2DaBoy).” “I was an old school NWA, Eazy-E fan. Eazy and Ren had a song back in the day called “2 Hard MF’s,” so I wanted to say two Compton motherf*&^%$s, ‘cuz it’s introducing the upcoming artist Big2daboy at my label, West Music. I wanted to showcase it with us both being from Compton. With his being the young generation and me being like the older generation, I wanted to show that we still have it on lock.”
Authentic Compton. Keepin’ it gangsta since 1988, MC Eiht has been releasing genuine issue Compton tracks. Accordingly, he has solidly earned the respect of his fans and peers in the industry. With his solo recordings, his work with Comptons Most Wanted and his stealthy collaborations, this highly prolific artist has previously released 18 albums, and this number does not even include the greatest hits, compilation albums or feature film soundtrack albums that have also resulted.
As one of the early Compton masters, MC Eiht has maintained a career with longevity that is the envy of many other artists. When he first rocked the mic in the studio, it was with CMW, comprised of producers Slip and DJ Unknown, plus Tha Chill, and their luminary scratcher DJ Mike T. Producer/director John Singleton lauded them as the musical inspiration for his classic film, "Boyz In The Hood," and the group’s song, “Growin’ Up In The Hood,” was picked as the single for its soundtrack. Eiht’s releases with CMW, "Straight Check’n Em" and "Music To Driveby" quickly became West Coast underground classics. Eiht, who has graced the cover of the "Source Magazine" twice, appeared in the Hughes Brothers’ feature film "Menace II Society," and he also achieved critical acclaim for his single, “Streiht Up Menace,” which appeared on the film’s multi-platinum selling soundtrack, driving it to the Number One spot on the Billboard Top 100 R&B Albums Chart, and holding that position for eight weeks straight. "We Come Strapped," which quickly achieved gold status, was singled out for attack in a speech by then Presidential candidate Bob Dole.
Always in demand, he has accepted numerous offers to record duets on albums released by other artists, three of whom include Spice One, Scarface and Pete Rock. Relentless, Eiht has released a slew of solo albums. He also played the role of Ryder on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and CMW is heard within its soundtrack. More importantly, however, MC Eiht’s music is the soundtrack of the streets, and of the Hub City, Compton, California, a feat that is envied by many other artists, despite their heavy padding from corporate bankrolling that has helped spawn a growing number of wanna-be imitators.
On “Affiliated,” Eiht logs onto this official Compton forum, addressing the fact that corporate sponsored hiphop artists have misconstrued and misrepresented West Coast gang culture. Eiht says, “A lot of what you’re seeing in the videos out there is fake. Because a lot of these niggas who are doing this now were not even doing this shit, gangbangin.’ For me to be the age I am, and to know gangbangin' in Compton since I was 12 years old, a lot of these cats, who are claiming this and that, ain’t but 26 years old. So a lot of them weren’t even around when it started. Also, they’re not even in the geographic areas, the sections that gang banging was even involved in. Like it just evolved a couple years ago in certain areas, and now niggas run with it, and pretend like they grew up with it. To have niggas thirty years later start gangbanging, and saying that they’re original with it is just ludicrous.” Eiht notes that the public gets fooled because of the large amount of money that has been spent on marketing from corporate dollars, as he observes, “The corporations are just trying to market our culture. So now it’s marketable to major corporations to wear tattoos and wear a rag, and claim to be from a neighborhood.”
Designer gangstas versus real Compton is the result, as MC Eiht has watched the commercialization of a culture that came into significance through artists like himself, who grew up in Compton, and who brought its issues to the attention of the rest of the world. Says Eiht, “Bandanas have always fascinated niggas who don’t know the significance behind them. Because niggas putting on white rags, orange rags, and all this, don’t even know the history behind it. However, if you take something and sell it to mainstream America, and mainstream America doesn’t know what the culture of it is, you’re going to be able to feed into the fakery that’s been created. And that’s just what is happening now. You have these high school kids and 21 year-old kids, and you got a new nigga introducing it to them, because these kids didn’t know what was going on back then, when they was two and three years old, but now, through the corporations, it is being taught it to them by niggas who just started doing it, themselves, just two years ago.”
Delivering his latest release “Affiliated,” MC Eiht brings more tracks that are already considered to be Compton, Cali neo-classics. Geah!

Georgia Malls Step Up Security for "ATL"

T.I.'s ATL is scheduled to open this Friday (March 31) and a security company for several Georgia area malls is making preparations in case audiences get out of hand.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently published a memo that was reportedly sent by Valor Security Service Perimeter Mall security director W. Mark Crowell via e-mail to Perimeter Mall, Discover Mills Mall, Cumberland Mall, North Point Mall, Oglethorpe Mall, Southlake Mall and Augusta Mall.

Valor provides security for all seven malls. In the email Crowell warns, "On March 31, the movie 'ATL' will be released in theaters. A theater manager at one of our properties has alerted the mall team that this movie could cause potential behavior problems. The movie trailer indicates that themes in the movie include moral choices and narcotics trafficking... Please appropriately prepare your security staffs for the release of this movie."

ATL, which was directed by Chris Robinson, is loosely based on the experiences of producer Dallas Austin and TLC's T-Boz, who both served as producers for the film. The film also stars Outkast's Big Boi.

While ATL earned a PG-13 rating for drug content, language, sexual material and some violence, Warner Bros. released a statement yesterday defending the film.

"ATL celebrates the vibrant culture of the South, particularly the music and energy that emanates from Atlanta. The story follows a group of teenagers as they overcome challenges and discover the importance of friendship, community and personal integrity."

David Keating, a spokesman for General Growth Properties Inc., the company that owns Cumberland, North Point, Southlake, Oglethorpe, Augusta and Perimeter malls said the memo was simply a precaution.

"It certainly wasn't sent out to discredit the film or anyone associated with it," Keating told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It certainly wasn't meant to target anyone."

General Growth also issued a prepared release stating: "We regret that the e-mail could be read to imply something that we do not condone, and apologize for any unintended offense it may have caused."

Keating also told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the company had "an incident" approximately five years ago related to another film release, but he didn't elaborate further.

Greg Alexander, the owner of Cascade Family Skating, where many of the scenes for ATL were shot also spoke up on behalf of the film.

"I'm in a business where you can't survive if you acquire a bad name," Alexander told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We have the children of some of our original customers coming in now to skate with their families. I don't care how much money someone threw at me, if a film affected my business in a negative way, it would not be shot here. Just going by the trailer, maybe someone who is uninformed about certain things might get the wrong idea. They use a lot of the music that the kids like and they show some gold teeth. Maybe someone saw all that, misunderstood and got a little nervous."

  • DJ WhooKid Working on Michael Jackson and 50 Cent Collaboration

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

DJ Whookid toured and deejayed around the world well before he hooked up with the G-Unit in 2002. Now that he's part of the hottest crew in rap music, he's been trying to broker some out-of-this-world collaborations. MTV.com reports that DJ Whookid recently spent some time in Bahrain with Michael Jackson, and he was later able to put the superstar on the phone with 50 Cent to discuss possibly working together.

DJ Whookid; Sheikh Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa; the Sheikh's son; John Legend; model Tyson Beckford; and Michael Jackson all recently had dinner together in Bahrain.

Whookid was initially surprised to see Jackson and later at dinner, Jackson invited Whookid to sit next to him. The deejay explained, "Mike was like, 'Whookid, come sit over here.'I was like, poinng! He was supposed to be there for like 45 minutes; he stayed for five hours. We was talking about Eminem. He was like, 'Is Eminem really retired?'I forgot that Eminem totally cremated him in one video ('Lose It'), but (Michael) didn't even bring it up. Then he started talking about 50."

Whookid added, "You can't talk to Mike all fluffy like everyone does. I got him to curse -- he said 's--t.'I told him he needs to cut his hair, get some million-dollar earrings, get a million-dollar watch, and take all them spaceship clothes off. He said, 'I have to change my whole outlook.' He said he was trying to work out."

The jury is still out on whether Jackson and 50 Cent will record together.

  • Killer 'Law & Order' Role Thrills Longtime Fan Ludacris

Ludacris as Darius Parker on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"
    Photo: Will Hart/NBC

"Look, I'm guilty of murder here, so I'm not going to make any excuses," Ludacris starts. "I stabbed her with my knife, and then I killed her baby. ... I dug a hole and buried them, and there's where they've been for the last three years. Should I

His confession is so cold, so matter-of-fact, you might get chills — which is why Ludacris says his upcoming role in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is "probably the best thing I've done."

Though he's already acted in films such as "Crash" and "Hustle & Flow," Luda says he loves this stint on the small screen because of the speed and efficiency of TV shoots and the plot twists inherent in the "Law & Order" franchise. "Man, I've been a fan of 'Law & Order' for a long time," he said. "That's why I tried to reach out and see if I could get a part somewhere on the show."

Most "Law & Order" plots are famously ripped from the current headlines, but the role the writer penned for Luda was based on a crime that happened more than a decade ago: Texas vs. Cobb, which was argued in front of the Supreme Court in 2001. "I ran across a story where a young man had killed a woman, taken her body and buried it in the woods, and no one had ever suspected him," writer Judith McCreary said.

In the original case, Raymond Levi Cobb burglarized the home of Lindsey and Margaret Owings in Walker County, Texas, in December 1993. Afterward, Lindsey Owings reported his wife and 16-month-old daughter missing, but Cobb claimed no knowledge of their disappearance — until November 1995, when he confessed to his father that he had killed them in the course of the burglary. He said Margaret had confronted him, he stabbed her in the stomach, and while he was digging her grave, the baby woke up.

"This man claimed that the baby just fell into the grave, and he left it there," McCreary said. "And he walked around ... with a cloud over his head because of this."

Lawyers argued to throw out the confession because Cobb had already been indicted for the burglary. In the hands of "Law & Order" writers, the story develops even more "mean turns," Luda said, since the criminal in question is the nephew of Ice-T's character, Detective Finn. Finn has to confront his estranged son and ex-wife to uncover the family secret. "This is like a 'Jerry Springer' [episode]; my family couldn't be more messed up," T said.

When Luda's confession gets thrown out, and he refuses a plea bargain, that's when things start to get interesting. "Go to hell, kiss my ass, and while you're down there, spread 'em," Luda's character tells Finn. "You're all going to have to testify, your lives out in the open for everyone to judge. They're going to know what kind of cop you are, and what kind of father and husband you weren't."

"The way I fit in, you get to understand this man's life, what he's been through and why he's made the decisions that he's made," Ludacris said. "It's really interesting, the motive behind the actions he takes."

"What's cool is the cop dilemma versus the family dilemma," T said. "I'm a cop, but I don't trust the law. For Finn to be on the fence is really cool. As a cop, I've probably seen a lot of people who did do it get off, with the right defense."

Luda, who name-checks T in "Number One Spot," said it was a pleasure finally meeting his idol. "He's real lighthearted, real humble," he said.

The admiration goes both ways. "We're happy to have him on the show," T said. "He got his sh-- together, he got his chops. And more people are excited for Luda than any of the so-called big names who've guest-starred before. That's fly to me."

The episode airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. on NBC.

For more on how Luda is workin' it in Hollywood, check out the features "Hustle & Cold" and "Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges: Movie Star."

Diddy vows to appeal ruling barring sales of 'ready to die'

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Sean "Diddy" Combs and his Bad Boy Entertainment label plan to appeal a ruling made by U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell last week which banned the sale of the late Notorious B.I.G.'s 1994 debut, Ready To Die, because the album's title track featured an unauthorized sample of the Ohio Players track "Singing In The Morning." Combs's legal team told allhiphop.com, "The verdict was erroneous and against the great weight of the evidence. We are very confident that it will be reversed on appeal."

Judge Campbell awarded the plaintiffs in the case, Bridgeport Music and Westbound Records, $4.2 million in punitive damages. The two companies own the rights to the Ohio Players catalogue.

In the meantime, the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready To Die is no longer available for radio play, downloads, or sale.

  • Eminem, Kanye West and others featured in new hip hop cops documentary

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Russell Simmons, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule, Snoop Dogg, and Damon Dash are some of the artists and executives who were interviewed for Don Sikorski's new documentary Rap Sheet: Hip Hop amp; The Cops, which is slated for release later this year. The project also features surveillance footage of many of hip hop's biggest stars which was compiled by police departments in New York City, Miami, and Los Angeles; the FBI; and the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Sikorski told Variety, "I was amazed at the volume of intimate, private information that this national network of police had gathered. But the more I talked to artists and cops, the more I understood that this is a situation with few heroes and plenty of villains on both sides."

In addition to interviews, Sikorski was able to gather information under the Freedom Of Information Act.

Rap Sheet: The Cops will also include performances by Eminem, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, and Lloyd Banks.

Billboard.com reports that the chart position was a career best for the rapper, but his 1996 release Tha Hall Of Game sold more than 123,000 copies its first week to enter the chart at Number Four. Former Destiny’s Child Member LeToya Reemerges With Sizzling Self-Titled Debut Album

Due July 18, Houston Singer’s Solo Bow Features Emotional Lead Single “Torn,” Production From Scott Storch And Guest Appearances From Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Bun B, Slim Thug

After helping establish Destiny’s Child as a musical force by singing on and co-writing the group’s signature smash hits “Bills Bills Bills” and “Say My Name,” LeToya has returned with her self-titled debut album. Due in stores July 18, the well-rounded collection features production from Scott Storch (Dr. Dre, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) and guest appearances from Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Bun B and Slim Thug.

Having a self-titled album made the most sense to the accomplished singer, who also runs the successful clothing and accessory store Lady Elle in Houston. “It’s the world’s first time hearing me and getting to know me as a solo artist,” LeToya says, “so what better way to get them to know me than call it LeToya?”

In addition to lead single “Torn,” which details the struggles of a strained relationship, LeToya features a number of songs that represent Houston’s emerging sound.. LeToya salutes her city on the innovative screwed-R&B hybrid “Gangster Grill,” which features Mike Jones and Killa Kyleon. She delivers two more uptempo smashes with “Tear Da Club Up” with Bun B and “All Eyes On Me,” which features Paul Wall and Slim Thug.

With the upbeat, Scott Storch-produced “I’m Good,” LeToya dismisses a no-good man, while on the sassy “She Don’t” she sings from the perspective of a woman who realizes that her man will never find a woman on her level. She then explores the pain that comes with a haphazard engagement on the moving ballad “Obvious.”

Before embarking upon her solo career, LeToya was a member of Destiny’s Child. During her seven-year stint, the group released the gold-certified singles “Bills Bills Bills” and “Say My Name,” both of which LeToya co-wrote and appeared on the breakthrough The Writing’s On The Wall album, which has been certified 8-times platinum in the United States.

Now, with LeToya ready, LeToya will again have the world saying her name.

  • Remy Ma Denies G-Unit Records Rumors

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

The Terror Squad's Remy Ma had a very public beef with Fat Joe and SRC Records CEO Steve Rifkind last month because she felt the two men weren't putting enough time and energy behind her debut album, There's Something About Remy. Reports began to surface that she might be leaving the Terror Squad to record for Fat Joe's rival 50 Cent and his G-Unit Records. But last Friday (March 17th), Remy Ma's management released a statement denying that the rapper was making a move to G-Unit Records. The statement read, "We definitely haven't heard anything about this and she's still signed to SRC/Universal."

Prior to the release of Ma's debut last month, Fat Joe explained how important the project was: "Where that puts us is in a hard position because Lil'Kim's first album that Biggie did with her is phenomenal. Foxy Brown's first album is phenomenal, so Remy has to make a phenomenal album. We understand what we need to do, you know, so she can be legendary and she can be, you know, hands down the greatest chick in the game."

Remy Ma was discovered by the late Big Pun in the late 90s and signed to Rifkind's Loud Records. Ma later re-signed with Rifkind at SRC Records after Loud Records was dissolved.

Judge Halts Notorious B.I.G. Album Sales

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A judge halted sales of Notorious B.I.G.'s breakthrough 1994 album "Ready to Die" after a jury decided the title song used part of an Ohio Players tune without permission.

The jury Friday awarded $4.2 million in punitive and direct damages to the two music companies that own rights to Ohio Players recordings.

The sales ban imposed by U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell affects the album and the title song in any form, including Internet downloads and radio play.

The jury decided that Bad Boy Entertainment and executive producer Sean "Diddy" Combs illegally used a part of the Ohio Players' 1992 song "Singing In The Morning."

Bridgeport Music and Westbound Records, which owned the song rights, have filed hundreds of lawsuits over "sampling," the practice of lifting parts of old music for new recordings. Most were settled out of court.

The companies get most of their income from song royalties by their artists, which include funk legend George Clinton, the Funkadelics and the Ohio Players.

"We've just been battling this for such a long time," Armen Boladian, owner of Westbound and Bridgeport said. "So many have been settled because companies didn't want anything to do with it, and we knew we were right."

The defendants, Bad Boy Entertainment, Bad Boy LLC, Justin Combs Publishing and Universal Records, plan to appeal. "We think (the verdict) is without merit," defense lawyer Jay Bowen said.

The estate of Notorious B.I.G. was originally sued but was dropped later as a defendant. The artist, born Christopher Wallace, was 24 in 1997 when he was killed in a shooting that remains unsolved.

The rotund New York rapper, also known as Biggie Smalls, was one of the most influential hip-hop artists of the 1990s. His albums "Ready To Die" and the posthumously released "Life After Death" together sold nearly 8 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

  • Young Buck won't pay bills?

Rapper YOUNG BUCK held a three-day birthday blow-out last weekend (10-12MAR06), but is reportedly refusing to pay the personal chef he hired to feed the 300 members of his entourage.

Young Buck - real name DAVID BROWN - is a member of rapper 50 Cent's crew G-UNIT and made headlines at his birthday party last year (05), which ended up in a near riot.

Over 30 police officers had to step in when 700 people showed up outside a club after tickets to the event were oversold. This year (06) the rapper held a three-night event at nightclub King of Clubs in Nashville, Tennessee, but refused to pay the tab for friends, including JAGGED EDGE and YOUNG JEEZY.

The posh celebration featured pricey bottles of Cristal champagne, as well as prime rib and seafood, but the rapper has allegedly ignored the bill, leaving celebrity chef IRVING BROWN II in the lurch.

DR KATHERINE BROWN, the wife of the chef, says, "He called us at the last minute and wanted us to do this for three nights and then cancelled after the first night, saying he couldn't afford it. "Meanwhile, he drives off in his Bentley and was walking around the party carrying a bottle of Cristal in each hand that costs $475 (GBP279) each."

Brown frequently works with celebrities, such as LeANN RIMES, and has never had a problem - until he crossed paths with the controversial rapper.

The well-respected chef has filed a lawsuit in a bid to recover the $5,600 (GBP3,294) Young Buck owes him. The rapper has frequently been in trouble with the law and faced assault charges relating to an alleged stabbing at the VIBE AWARDS in 2004. The charges were eventually dropped.

  • 50 Cent decides to hold off on new album

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

50 Cent was planning to release his third album this summer, but the rapper has decided against it after talking with Shady Records head Eminem. 50 Cent told MTV.com, "Em didn't agree with me. My motivation wasn't really right. I get a little frustrated from time to time and I got so much material that I make that isn't being heard that I was like, 'Yo, I just wanna release an album again.'And he was like, 'Nah, you gotta wait.'I don't care about none of that (timing), I just want the record to go out, but it just makes better sense to take our time and re-create the new album."

Unfortunately, pushing the album back means 50 Cent will probably trash all of the new material that he has now. The rapper explained, "By the time the summer passes, the music that I planned to release will be dated to me and I'll have so many new ideas that I wanna write something else. I don't ever receive the credit I'm supposed to receive for my music. I receive all the checks I'm supposed to receive, I just don't receive all the trophies. But I'm cool with it. I just look at it like I should continue to dominate with it more. I'll get lifetime-achievement awards, (as) opposed to best-new-artist awards, so it's cool."

Although 50 Cent will not be releasing a new album, there's plenty of new music coming from the G-Unit, including Mobb Deep's new album Blood Money, which drops in April. The Mobb Deep project will be followed by new albums by Lloyd Banks and Young Buck.

50 Cent explained that rap music needs the G-Unit because the genre is currently stuck in a creative rut. He said, "A lot of the music that comes out of the South is kind of simplified, and I think it's kinda 'cause they just wanna have a good time. They don't wanna think about what (they) just said... They really didn't make sense, but they made sense in a way, and they just wanna hear something while they're actually partying, and it works for them. But when they don't take the time to make it the highest quality possible, it hurts the actual hip-hop (genre). People wanna make music they can get away with, as opposed to the best possible music they can make."

Jay-Z Says Rick Ross is a Priority

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Def Jam president Jay-Z is still basking in the success of Ne-Yo's chart-topping debut, but the rapper hasn't lost sight of the fact that it's important for the label to enjoy success from its rap releases as well. Jay-Z explained why Rick Ross and his smash single "Hustlin'" are a priority. He told MTV.com, "We're shooting that video right now, and that's an urgent project for us. We need that one. We have a wide range of music (at Island Def Jam), everything from Fall Out Boy to the Killers to Rihanna. I just want everybody to know that we are still in the rap business."

Jay-Z, who beat out several labels in a bidding war for Ross's service, shared why he felt the Miami rapper was so special. He said, "His whole thing is the other side of Miami. Everybody is talking about the cars and the water. He's showing you the (darker) side of Miami. That's his whole approach to it."

Ross's Def Jam debut, Career Criminal, should be out this summer.

  • Fabolous Fires Back at Mase

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

From very early in his career, Fabolous was compared to Mase because of his slow, deliberate lyrical delivery. At the time, Mase was retired and just a memory to fans but upon his return, he threw a few jabs toward Fabolous, most notably the line "I don't know why Loon and Fabby won't just say I'm their daddy" from the song "I Don't Know, Officer," from the Get Rich Or Die Tryin' soundtrack. Fabolous has responded to Mase's comment on his new double mixtape, Loso's Way. The rapper told MTV.com, "He threw a jab and I threw a jab and uppercut."

Fabolous also explained that he was surprised by the lyrical attack because he saw Mase in Philadelphia and the two men spoke and shook hands. The rapper explained, "For you (Mase) to say that to me and the next time I hear you on record, (you're dissing me), I feel dude is confused. If you're not really a killer but you running with a bunch of dudes that say they're killers, I guess you're gonna talk like you a killer, too, even if it's not believable. I think (Mase) got caught up in trying to act like the people he's around. 50 Cent and them is known for taking jabs and saying wild, reckless stuff. I guess he felt he had to jump in those shoes, too. I just had to answer to it."

In related news, Fabolous has completed his move to Def Jam Records and he's working on a new album. Mase is still contractually bound to Sean Combs's Bad Boy Records, but Diddy and 50 Cent are in the process of working out a deal that would allow Mase to join the roster of G-Unit Records.

Juvenile has beef with Cash Money Records and FEMA

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

New Orleans-based rapper Juvenile released his eighth album, Reality Check, on Tuesday (March 7th), and while making his promotional rounds in support of the album, he has publicly stated that he would like to have a fist fight with Cash Money Records CEO Bryan "Baby" Williams. Juvenile also has some choice words for former friend Lil Wayne, but he doesn't see him as a threat. Juvenile told MTV.com, "I got a 15-year-old daughter. I got a 13-year-old son. You think I got time to be playing with this little boy?"

The rapper added, "One day he'll make a record (like "I Miss My Dawgs") and it'll sound so sincere. Then the next day he gets on TV and he ain't got nothing good to say about us... Did you (say you miss us) to sell a record? I been in situations with the dude where I felt he only shook my hand because he was scared."

Juvenile's beef with Cash Money Records stems from the fact that he was allegedly cheated out of money by the label. The matter was latter resolved in court, with Juvenile walking away with a multi-million dollar award.

The rapper is also upset with the federal government and its response to Hurricane Katrina. He shot his latest video, "Get Ya Hustle On," in New Orleans and it mocks several government officials. He explained, "It's a motivational record. It's really telling you, 'Stop feeling sorry for yourself. You knew the government wasn't going to do nothing for you anyway.'There's not a person in this country that doesn't have the mindset, 'Man, this country don't care about me.'Truthfully. You ask the general public, they gonna say that. I'm saying to them, 'Look, man, go get your hustle on. Do whatever you have to do. I don't care what you have to do. You don't have no job, they ain't trying to give you no job. You got mouths to feed.'That's what the song is about. Do whatever you have to do to eat. Back to the old Malcolm X speech, 'By any means necessary'... When I tell you I'm angry, I'm angry."

Rest in Peace - Notorious B.I.G

    Epilogue by R.Motions
Ok its March 9, 2006 and the day that one of the greatest artists to bless our world was taken in an untimely death. Notorious B.I.G was something different to all of us. Some of you may have not liked his music, some of you may love it, but the fact remains that he was and still is one of the most influences figures in the HipHop community. So on this Day we recognize The Notorious B.I.G. for his accomplishements as both and artist and a special person to those that knew him personally.

Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997), also known as Biggie Smalls (after a stylish gangster in 1975's Let's Do it Again) and Frank White (from the film King of New York), but best known as The Notorious B.I.G. (Business Instead of Game and, since his death, Books Instead of Guns), was a popular rapper of the mid-1990s.

His career was overshadowed by the Bad Boy/Death Row Records feud during his life, but following his untimely death in 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. has been celebrated as a hip hop legend. He is remembered for his storytelling ability, talented freestyling ability, and his easy to understand yet complex flow.

    Childhood and drug career

The 6 ft 3 in., 400 pound (136 kg) rapper, was born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York City. B.I.G.'s Jamaican-born mother Voletta Wallace, a preschool teacher, raised him single handedly; his father George Latore, who was a small-time Jamaican politician, abandoned him and his mother when he was two years old. Despite these circumstances, Voletta claimed that Christopher lived a comfortable life. He would later profess otherwise on songs such as "Juicy". As an honor-roll student, he dropped out of school at 17 to work as a small-time crack cocaine dealer in his hometown. He would later traffic the drug into Virginia where it could be sold at a higher price. Even as a drug dealer, young Wallace was known for his charisma. He rapped as a hobby and was soon discovered by DJ Mister Cee (Big Daddy Kane's former DJ), with whom he released his demo tape.

    Rap career

The demo tape made by Biggie and Mister Cee found its way into the hands of then Uptown Records employee Sean "Puffy" Combs, who fell in love with the rapper and quickly arranged for a meeting with Biggie and Mister Cee. Combs and Wallace became instant friends, and their first appearance together was on the 1992 reggae song "Dolly My Baby" by Supercat.

Biggie first gained notice with "Party and Bullshit," his first single. His second mainstream appearance was on the remix to Mary J. Blige's smash hit "Real Love". He appeared on "One Million Strong" on a song called "RUNNIN'" with 2Pac & Dramacydal. He also made an appearance on a Trapp album called "Stop The Gunfight" on a track called "Be The Realist" with 2Pac & Trapp. This album also contained a remix of "RUNNIN'" called "Stop The Gunfight". All of these guest appearces built a sizeable buzz around Biggie's name leading up to his solo debut. In 1994 he released "Juicy", his second (yet first mainstream) single. He also released Ready to Die, his debut album. Ready to Die is regarded as one of hip-hop's all-time classic albums, and is credited with revitalizing East Coast hip hop. The album features one of rap's most famous "playa anthems", the song "Big Poppa", which samples R&B singers, the Isley Brothers. On the track "Everyday Struggle", Biggie's album drew critical acclaim for its vivid story-telling and razor-sharp lyricism, such as "They don't know about the stress filled day/Baby on the way, mad bills to pay/That's why you drink Tanqueray/So you can reminisce and wish/You wasn't living so devilish." Another standout track is "Warning," wherein Biggie once again displays his story-telling ability. The album is considered by many to be one of the best and most hardcore hip-hop albums of all time.

In 1995, Biggie's clique Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Junior Masters At Finding Intelligent Attitudes) released the album Conspiracy. That same year saw Biggie introduce to the mainstream his crewmates Lil' Kim and Lil' Cease. That same year, B.I.G.'s single "One More Chance" debuted at #5 on the Pop Charts, at the time, tying Scream/Childhood by Michael Jackson as the highest debut single in music history, although this record has since been surpased by Michael Jackson's You Are Not Alone which debuted at number one. "One More Chance," which sampled the R&B song "Stay With Me," was a remix of the song by the same name that originally appeared on Ready to Die. "One More Chance" was also Biggie's highest selling single, as the single alone was certified Platinum.

By the end of 1995, The Notorious B.I.G. had become one of the most famous and popular rappers in the world. He was named Lyricist Of The Year by The Source, and many dubbed him the "King Of New York" (a play on his "Frank White" nickname, which stems from the movie with the same name).

East Coast/West Coast feud and death

Although Ready to Die brought massive fame to Biggie, he is most famed for his alleged involvement in rap's most infamous feud between the East and West Coast scenes. Before Ready to Die was released, Biggie began to associate with rap superstar Tupac Shakur, a New York native who moved to Baltimore and later Los Angeles, California. The two recorded a number of songs together, and Biggie even performed alongside Tupac in a now-famous Madison Square Garden freestyle in 1994. However, their friendship ended when Shakur was shot in November of 1994 and suspected Biggie and Puff Daddy of culpability. Shakur subsequently joined Death Row Records after his release from prison in late 1995. Death Row Records and Bad Boy Entertainment were the two most successful labels of the 1990's, and with the two biggest stars in rap now associated with different labels, the feud escalated. When Tupac was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, where he had been watching a Mike Tyson boxing match, rumors of Biggie's possible involvement in the murder cropped up almost immediately. Biggie denied the allegations. Also around this time, Biggie was involved in a car accident that shattered his leg and would force him to use a cane for the rest of his life.

On March 9, 1997, the events came full circle when Biggie was shot and killed in Los Angeles, where he had been attending a party by VIBE Magazine near the Peterson Automotive Museum. Neither murder has been conclusively solved, though theories abound as to the motives and identities of the murderers. Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight and the Mob Piru Bloods gang with whom he associated are among the prime suspects for involvement. In his book, LAbyrinth, LAPD officer Randall Sullivan probes the circumstances and figures involved in the shootings.

Additionally, Director Nick Broomfield and co-producer Dmitri Leybman have released an investigative documentary called Biggie & Tupac which implicates the LAPD and Suge Knight. This theory seems most credible being for two reasons. The first is that the LAPD's elite robbery and homicide unit didn't begin to investigate Wallace's murder until a month after his shooting and the job was given to a less adequate division of LAPD investigators. This was one of the first celebrity murders that were not immediately handled by the LAPD's elite robbery and homicide unit which makes the LAPD seem suspicious in relation to their role in Wallace's murder. The second reason is that several prison inmates who were once members of the Mob Piru Bloods have come forward and said that they know for a fact that Suge Knight ordered Wallace's murder due to their own personal connections. There are many theories as to who is responsible for Wallace's murder. Some believe that Sean Combs may have ordered it being that rappers are more profitable while dead than they are while alive being that dead rappers don't have to be paid. Others believe that the Crip gang may have shot Wallace in retalliation for Wallace not paying for the security services they provided at a previous party. There are many other theories ranging in credibility as well.

The Los Angeles Times ran an almost universally discredited article entitled "Who Shot Tupac Shakur?" by reporter Chuck Phillips, which concludes that Biggie Smalls was ultimately behind the Las Vegas shooting of Tupac. Evidence to the contrary, most notably a dated and timed excerpt from a recording that Biggie made in a studio in New York when he was supposedly providing the murder weapon to hitmen in Las Vegas has since surfaced. The fact that the article claims that Biggie checked in and out of a hotel without being noticed by a single individual, despite being a 6'3", 300 pound national celebrity also damages the credibility of these articles. However, these theories are mere speculation. While many contain ideas that most people would think true, the truth is that no one really knows the events that conspired to bring about the untimely death of one of, if not the best hip hop artists in history.
    [edit]

    Posthumous career

Life After Death, Biggie's second album, debuted at #1 on the charts. The album was released only two weeks after Biggie's murder. Its lead single was "Hypnotize", which was also the last video Biggie would take part in. Life After Death hit number one on the Billboard charts and spawned several hit singles in the United States. The album sold 10 million copies (worldwide), and, as of 2005, is one of the best selling hip-hop album of all time. Biggie's biggest chart hit was with the song "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems," an upbeat number featuring rappers Mase and Puff Daddy, and sampling the disco song "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross for the beat. The video is noted for having started the "Shiny Suit" era in hip hop. The last video single from Life After Death was "Sky's The Limit" featuring 112. The video for this song, directed by Spike Jonze, was noted for the use of children portraying a day in the life of Biggie.

During the summer of 1997, Puff Daddy released his debut album "No Way Out," which featured Biggie on a number of songs, notably in the chorus of the single "Been Around the World" over a David Bowie sample ("Let's Dance"). However, the single that carried this album to the top was "I'll Be Missing You", a tribute and a massively successful single dedicated to Biggie. The song featured Puff Daddy, Wallace's widow Faith Evans and R&B group 112. The song sampled the melody of The Police's hit song "Every Breath You Take." All these artists performed the song with (former Police vocalist) Sting during the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.

The year 1999 saw another release of a posthumous Notorious B.I.G. album. Puff Daddy released Biggie's third album, Born Again. It had two hit singles called "N.O.T.O.R.I.O.U.S." featuring Puff Daddy and Lil' Kim (interpolation to the Duran Duran's song of the same name), and "Dead Wrong" a single that later was remixed with a verse from Eminem. The video for "N.O.T.O.R.I.O.U.S." also featured appearances by 98 Degrees and Fat Joe, and is also the last Notorious B.I.G. solo video to date (as of 2005).

In 2002, Puff Daddy gave 50 Cent rights to sample Biggie's verses from "------" (a song from the Born Again album) into a song called "The Realest ------". It got out as a single and hit New York radio stations as a big hit. Many have attributed that song as a major key to the rise of 50 Cent, who is now one of hip-hop's biggest superstars. The song (which also featured and was produced by Eminem) was later put on the soundtrack for the 2003 hit movie Bad Boys 2 with Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Later on in 2003, Biggie appeared on "Runnin' (Dying To Live)" along with 2Pac. The song was produced by Eminem.

On August 28, 2005, at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, Biggie was paid tribute to by host P Diddy, and Snoop Dogg. The setup had an orchestra playing while the lyrics from "Juicy" and "Warning" played on the arena speakers. It was a well-received tribute for that evening. In September 2005, VH1 had its second annual hip hop honors, with a tribute to Biggie headlining the show. The long awaited The Notorious B.I.G. Duets: The Final Chapter album was released December 20, 2005.

Fans will still have one last chance to hear unreleased Biggie material, as he will be featured on Busta Rhymes' highly anticipated Aftermath debut, The Big Bang.

    Legacy

Big was noticed early in his career mostly for his lyrical content, which included hardcore gangsta-rap lyrics at a time when that style dominated the West Coast, and most of his native New York was dominated by the jazziness of A Tribe Called Quest and Gang Starr and the blend of Five Percenter/far East-influenced stylings of MCs like Afu Ra, Jeru the Damaja and the Wu-Tang Clan.

His tales of street exploits (selling crack, robbing, shootouts, etc.) coupled with witty expressions permeated his first album and the freestyle appearances he made on radio stations, but his reputation for rawness didn't detract from his diversity. On Juicy he opens up and reminisces about his early life, and Me & My Bitch sees him expressing his deep feelings for his female companion, while songs like Big Poppa and One More Chance are a flawless switch to odes to the opposite sex. To top it all off, his flow (or ability to place words squarely and melodically on the tapping and thumping of the beat) was always immaculate.

He was also respected for his storytelling ability, which was not fully realized until his second album. During his hiatus he had developed his wordplay and structure, honing the technical side to his verses. Kick in the Door saw him moving flawlessly from an "A-A-B-B" rhyme structure to "C-C-D-D", all while sprinkling his bars with clever turns of phrase, metaphors and punchlines, on top of a perfect flow. It is because of this versatility that Notorious B.I.G. is considered by many the greatest rapper of all time.Biggie's lyrics have been sampled by many of today's rappers, such as Jay-Z, Fat Joe, 50 Cent, Fabolous, Foxy Brown and Busta Rhymes. In 2001, hip hop magazine The Source crowned Biggie as the greatest MC (Master of Ceremony) of all time. In 2003, XXL Magazine asked many hip hop artists, including Nelly, 50 Cent, Memphis Bleek, Jadakiss and others, whom they believed were 5 best rappers of all time, and Biggie's name appeared on more rappers' lists than any other MC. During Canibus's 1998 feud with LL Cool J, Canibus responded to LL Cool J's claim to be the greatest rapper of all time on the song Second Round K.O. by saying "the greatest rapper of all time died on March 9th.", which was the day Biggie died. Biggie's lyrics have been sampled in many songs, including Akon's "Ghetto", Jay-Z's "A Dream" and Ashanti's "Foolish (Remix)".

    What If B.I.G. was alive?

Many people in associated with rap music continuously speculate about how different rap would be today had Biggie Smalls never been killed. Many say that most rappers today would not be in the game if Biggie was still around. This belief is also confirmed by Jadakiss, in an appearence on MTV's The Shop where Jada says instead these rappers would be taking fast food orders. However, close, personal friends of Biggie, most notably Lil' Cease, Lil Kim, and Puff Daddy, all insist that Biggie was not going to be in hip-hop for a very long time. In an interview with XXL Magazine (made in 1995 but released in 2003), Biggie himself said he was not going to rap past the year 2000, instead opting to manage the careers of Junior MAFIA.

Also, at the time of his death, Biggie created a hip-hop supergroup called the Commission, which consisted of himself, Jay-Z, Mase, Cam'ron, The L.O.X., Capone-N-Noreaga, Black Rob, and Charli Baltimore.

Shyne Fights For His Money From Behind Bars

Owen Michelen, Shyne's lawyer, will be challenging the "Son of Sam" law that froze Barrow's assets last year. According to reports, Barrow's family is in dire need of monetary assistance.

"He was the sole support of his family", Michelen told The New York Post. "They are in very difficult financial circumstances."

The "Son of Sam" law prohibits any criminal offender to receive profits from a crime. Profits that would have gone to the offender are held to the benefit of the offender's victims or contributed to the state victim compensation fund.

Shyne (born Jamal Barrow), who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for his involvement in a 1999 shooting at a New York night club, signed a multi-million deal with Def Jam Records in 2004 and released the album God Father Buried Alive in the same year.

In March 2005, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Garson, froze Barrow's assets including royalties from God Father Buried Alive and a $500,000 advance he received from Def Jam. The aforementioned assets were to be held until civil suits filed against Barrow by victims of the 1999 incident were settled.

On Tuesday (March 7), Michelen hopes to convince Justice Garson to allow Barrow's mother to get financial relief from the $500,000 advance. "Barrow's record deal is no way related to the crime" said Michelen. "The law's gone overboard. You don't lose all your rights in prison."

During the 1999 shooting, three club goers were shot, including Nataria Reuben who suffered a gunshot to the face. All of the victims' lawsuits cite "personal injuries, pain and suffering."

"Those funds are for the crime victims," said Reuben's lawyer Debra Reiser when word of Barrow's actions reached her. "That's what the law. He's trying to circumvent the law for his own purposes."

In June 2005, Barrow's appeal for a new trial was rejected by a five-member panel of a New York State Appeals Court. He is not eligible for parole until at least 2009.

In related news, Marion "Suge" Knight recently revealed that he had interest in signing Shyne to Death Row East, a subsidiary of Death Row Records.

  • Three Six Mafia Makes Hip-Hop History

LOS ANGELES, CA (03.06.06) -- Rap music was large and in charge at the 78th edition of the Academy Awards. In a night of first-time acting wins and a surprise best picture victory for "Crash," Southern rappers Three 6 Mafia enjoyed a rare moment of Oscar glory for the hip-hop community.

The group scored an Oscar milestone by bringing the first rap/hip-hop song to the broadcast when it performed "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," which earned a best original song nomination for "Hustle & Flow." The song title may not scream Oscar class, but before questions could arise the group was introduced by fellow Southern rapper Ludacris who made a point to remind the audience that past winners in the best song category include double-entendre songtitles such as "Shaft," "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Morning After." After that introduction, Three 6 Mafia's R-rated and bleeped explosive performance tore the Kodak Theatre and set the mood for the historic win.

It used to be that kids wanted to grow up and become rock stars; now they want to be rappers. Hollywood, in the constant pursuit of this elusive young demographic, has finally woken up to this fact. Having fellow rapper and previous Oscar nominee Queen Latifah present the best original song Oscar to Three 6 Mafia confirmed to the Academy Awards crowd what millions of kids already know — hip-hop has permeated the fabric of American culture and rap music is here to stay.

  • Jimmy Henchmen and Wyclef Jean Give Back To Homeland

The Game's manager Jimmy Henchmen and Fugees front man Wyclef Jean spent time earlier this month(March 2) visiting underprivileged children in Haiti.
Czar Entertainment CEO Henchmen (born Jimmy Rosemond) joined efforts with Jean's organization Yele Haiti, which was founded to establish projects in education, health, environment and humanitarian assistance. The two visited with children from the L'Athletique d'Haiti soccer program, donating some 200 pairs of sneakers and soccer balls to the young athletes.

"The deplorable conditions that I have witnessed in Haiti has created a sense of urgency to get involved and assist with the rebuilding efforts," Henchmen said via statement. "As a Haitian-American, I am extremely proud to be able to donate to the children of Haiti. As a man of influence within the community, it is my responsibility to increase awareness among the hip-hop generation."

In addition to their visit with the children of L'Athletique d'Haiti, Henchmen and Wyclef also met with government officials in Haiti to discuss current conditions and improvement practices. With nearly an 80% unemployment rate, Haiti is currently the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, with the majority of residents living on less than $1 per day; and because of constant civil unrest it is also among the world's most dangerous climates.

In addition to Game, Czar Entertainment has also worked with Brandy, Mike Tyson, The Notorious B.I.G. and Lauryn Hill.

In related news, Game is currently putting the finishing touches on his sophomore set. The album, titled The Doctor's Advocate, is due in stores on June 6.

  • Biggie Goes Platinum One More Time

  • Farnsworth Bentley Hooks Up with Kanye and Andre 3000 for New Album

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Farnsworth Bentley is almost done with his long-awaited debut album. Sean "Diddy" Combs's former manservant has been working diligently on his untitled G.O.O.D. Music debut album, which is scheduled to hit this summer. MTV.com reports that Bentley has recorded with Kanye West, Outkast's Andre 3000, singer Esthero, and hip-hop trio Sa-Ra. Bentley said, "Kanye's really excited. I've been collaborating with some really good producers and good friends."

In addition to his A-list buddies, the umbrella-toting rapper has also worked with some up-and-coming producers. Bentley said, "With technology being the way it is, with ProTools so accessible and so many people working and making music, your hit could be right down the street. And I really take the CDs (people try to hand me)."

He added, "I remember being on the street and wantin'to be part of the game, and I've gotten some really crazy hot records (from newcomers), and because Kanye really is about his brand, which is G.O.O.D. Music, it's not an ego thing as far as who's producing what. So I've gotten some really good music out of some 'no-name'or newer producers."

The rapper hasn't picked a single, but "Since I Was Nine" -- which was produced by Tony DeNiro -- is a frontrunner.
