Method Man's '4:21...The Day After' Hits Stores August

In the dark, womb-like sanctuary of Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady studios in downtown Manhattan—a place that has birthed historical musical moments—sits the artist known as Iron Lung, Tical, Wu Brother #1, Johnny Blaze, and of course…Method Man. With a trusty, half-lit blunt by his side, he is lounging in front of white grand piano, his hands sweeping the keyboards, trying to remember a tune he memorized years ago.

Maybe the idea of one of hip hop’s finest—and grimiest—emcees tickling the ivories sounds odd, or out of place, but Mr. Mef has never been the type to fit in. His husky, guttural voice is perhaps the most distinct in the game, his flow—dark and complex like the graphic novels from which he took his moniker from—can bury itself in cinematic tracks from RZA, complement the voices of R&B divas and or attack party tracks from Rocwilder. Whether he is trading verses with partner in rhyme, Redman, crowd surfing at a Wu Tang show, or stealing a scene in various television shows and films, Method Man is a true individual spirit. With his latest album, 4:21, The Day After, he is also focused on being a true artist.

Unlike some previous efforts—where Meth admits his priorities were different—on this new album, he says he’s focusing on lyrics. After his last album, Tical O: The Prequel, he went through an especially rough time in his life—both personally and professionally—which provided him with a bulk of material. “I had a lot on my mind at the time and the second thing was, I decided to really talk about something and I had a lot to draw from and when the pen hit the paper it was like damn, remember this? And by the time I was done it was like shit, let’s go.” The result is his most personal and introspective work yet.

Doing the work behind the boards on 4:21, are Wu Tang mastermind and long-time collaborator, RZA as well as Scott Storch, Havoc, K1 and Eric Sermon. “With Eric, we did three songs in three days,” Meth says with an amazed smile, “He just comes in with ideas of top. And with RZA, shit, I’ve watched him build tracks from scratch, so all I really have to do is put the pen to the paper”. Eric Sermon provided the beat for Meth’s first single, “Say”, featuring Lauryn Hill. The track finds Meth addressing critics, fickle fans and haters for disrespecting him and his Wu Tang brethren.

“I’ve been venting about all this for years and [my manager] was like, ‘Write about it, Eric has the perfect joint.’ And, Lauryn Hill herself, she just had the raw emotion, the small things she said on the song was enough for me to push my pen and let myself be vulnerable.” Meth says his ability to let himself be so open is in line with the entire concept of the album, and its title. “The national weed smoking day is 4/20, so I named my album 4/21 the day after. Because after that day, you have this moment of clarity when you’re not high and you see things clearly.” The Grammy-winner sighs and continues, a serious, determined look on his face. “You feel like you’re not in on the joke, and everyone’s laughing at you. I felt like no one was taking me seriously. I got real angry and I just starting writing.”

Anger proved to be a great motivator, as the Ticalion Stallion wrapped up the album in a few short months. He says the creative process has been cathartic, and though his skin hasn’t gotten any thicker, he’s able to use his writing talent to inspire self-confidence.

“It’s real talk, I’m going to keep my spirits up and not let it get things to me. You know, if you start reading your own press and feeding into it, and you start questioning yourself, like, ‘am I wack?’ and you have to be like, ‘No!’ I learned to pat myself on the back, and that it’s ok to pat myself on the back sometimes.”
We definitely agree.

Beanie Sigel Working with Dre & Vidal

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Philadelphia-based rapper Beanie Sigel is ready to get back to work after putting his legal troubles behind him. The rapper has decided to work on his fourth solo album with R&B producers Dre & Vidal, whose real names are Andre Harris and Vidal Davis. The duo has produced hits for Michael Jackson, Floetry, Jill Scott, and Musiq.

Dre & Vidal are also from Philadelphia, and Sigel explained that the city hasn't lost its magic: "Philly been here, it's just that you seeing the raw side of Philly right now. That's all it is. Philly been here. Philly has always been right there in anything: music, sports, whatever. You know what I mean? It's just that you've been hoodwinked for a little minute on the rap side. Everybody ain't 'Gettin'Jiggy With It'in Philly."

Sigel's new album will be released on his own State Property record label.

His first two gold-certified albums, 1999's The Truth and 2001's The Reason, were released on Roc-A-Fella Records. The rapper's last release, 2005's The B. Coming, was released on The Dame Dash Music Group label after Jay-Z and Dame Dash ended their Roc-A-Fella Records partnership.

TVT Records loses Battle with DEF JAM records

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

In May 2003, then-Island Def Jam CEO Lyor Cohen and Def Jam Records were found guilty of fraud, copyright infringement, and breach of contract, and ordered to pay $131 million to TVT Records. The award was later overturned by an appeals court. The Associated Press reports that TVT Records'attempt to have the appeal court's decision reviewed by the Supreme Court has failed. The Supreme Court ruled on Monday (June 26th) that they would not hear the case.

TVT Records initially filed the lawsuit against Cohen and Def Jam when the company pulled out of an agreement to release an Irv Gotti-produced album by Ja Rule and the Cash Money Clic in November 2002. That's after TVT Records had spent more than $1 million to record and market the project.

Ja Rule was signed to TVT Records in the early '90s as a member of the Cash Money Clic. The rapper explained how his career began after meeting Irv Gotti: "Me and Irv Gotti met in, like, '92, '93, through an extended friend, my man Jody. And we instantly hit it off. First time we went in the studio, we hit it off. And we did a few records, and we formed a group, CMC. And that was my first introduction into the music world."

Warrant issued after DMX misses court

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The rapper DMX failed to show up in court Wednesday to face a bevy of bad-driving charges, and a judge who had granted him two postponements said she had had enough.

City Court Judge Barbara Leak issued an arrest warrant for DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons and whose albums include "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot" and "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood."

"We have granted him a number of courtesies," the judge said. "It ends now."

The rapper's lawyer, Stacey Murray, promised that he would come to court Thursday. She said DMX, 35, had flown to New York from Arizona for the court appearance but apparently became ill.

DMX was pulled over in White Plains on June 2 for speeding and making unsafe lane changes in a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, police said. Once he was stopped, police said, officers found he was not wearing a seat belt and did not have a driver's license.

Nine days later, he was ticketed for driving a 2006 Suburban on the shoulder of the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison.

On June 16, police in Scottsdale, Ariz., cited him for carrying a concealed handgun outside a nightclub. They said he pulled the gun from a holster and put it under the front seat of his 1964 Chevrolet convertible.

Last month, the rapper was arrested in London after refusing to put on a seat belt and becoming abusive on a flight from New York, authorities said.

Last year, DMX served 70 days in jail for violating his parole following a 2004 incident in which he posed as an undercover federal agent and crashed his SUV through a security gate at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

A week after he pleaded guilty in that incident, state police accused him of driving over 100 mph on Interstate 684 in North Castle, in Westchester County.

Questlove helping Jay-Z with Reasonable Doubt Performance

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Questlove from the Roots has worked with Jay-Z in the past, so he wasn't surprised when the rap mogul asked him to serve as musical director for his special concert this Sunday (June 25th) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The drummer said he was a little nervous about Jay-Z performing all of the songs from his 1996 platinum debut, Reasonable Doubt. Questlove told MTV.com, "Unless you do (the songs) night after night, there's a chance you could forget (the lyrics). In (Jay's) case, I'm suggesting -- I've seen (Bruce) Springsteen do it, R.E.M. do it, (David) Bowie do it -- I'm suggesting that (there) be a teleprompter. There are too many words in '22 Two's'(and) 'Regrets.'Right now, he's playing the album over and over again, learning words. He says he's gonna know everything."

Questlove was also concerned because several guest from Reasonable Doubt, such as the late Notorious B.I.G. and Foxy Brown, who is suffering from sudden severe hearing lost, are unavailable. The producer said, "'Bring It On'(has) my favorite (DJ) Premier loop. The problem is it's a posse cut. (Who knows what's going on with) Jaz-O and Sauce Money. I don't want to cut one verse of that song. That is my favorite song on Reasonable Doubt. I gotta figure out a way to prolong it. Make (Jay) bust a second verse or something.

He added, "This show, I will say that this is gonna be a challenge. It's sort of like doing a magic trick when you have to destroy a building and (then) that building is demolished. You've got one shot. We're gonna do a very different approach. Yes, we're gonna do Reasonable Doubt. But the question is, how are we gonna do it? I got my work cut out (for me)."

Jay-Z will launch a world tour in September.

In related news, the Roots will release their Def Jam Records debut, Game Theory, in August.

Bone Crusher Joins cast of Celebrity Fit Club 4

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Atlanta-based rapper Bone Crusher is the latest rapper to sign on for VH-1's Celebrity Fit Club. Biz Markie, Young MC, and Bizarre are some of the other rappers who have appeared on the popular reality show. The cast of Celebrity Fit Club 4 also includes: Carnie Wilson, Angie Stone, Nick Turturro, Erika Eleniak, Ted Lange, Tina Yothers, and Vinnie Pastore.

In related news, Bone Crusher will release his new album, Release The Beast, next month. The lead single from the project is "Southern Gorillas."

Bone Crusher released his gold-certified debut, AttenCHUN, in 2003. The set featured the mega-hit "Never Scared," but his follow-up, Fight Music, was pushed back and ultimately shelved after his former label, Arista Records, was folded into Jive-BMG.

Trick Daddy working on new album and DVD

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Miami-based rapper Trick Daddy is currently working on a new album called Book Of Thugs, Part II, which he plans to release in September. He's also working on a new DVD titled Trick Daddy: The Real Entourage. According to Trick Daddy's publicist, the project, which is due out late this summer, will follow the rapper through his day-to-day life, which includes meeting women, playing craps, freestylin', and cooking. Trick Daddy's father, Pops, is also featured throughout the DVD.

Trick Daddy broke down what was so unique about the Miami sound: "I guess it's their vocabulary, is more country, but our vocabulary is more ghetto, is more Southern, is more slang. You know, we ain't as much country."

The rapper added: "Then ain't too many cities in the world where you have Haitians, Cubans, Colombians, Puerto Rican, Africans, Jamaicans, and Caucasians. You ain't gonna find too many cities in the world like that, and we grew up in it, where we might have five Haitians in my classroom, five Jamaicans, you know? Miami is like the America to a lot of minorities."

Rick Ross Honored As RIAA Certifies Ringtones As Gold, Platinum

Miami Rapper Rick Ross' ringtone is now a blingtone

Ross received a plaque bearing a golden cell phone Wednesday when music industry officials honored 128 songs as the first batch of gold and platinum ringtones. Just like vinyl, tapes and CDs, the sounds of ringing cell phones will now translate into awards for sales of 500,000, 1 million and beyond.

"The ring tones are just another gateway to connecting with the kids and the fans," said Ross, whose award sported a shiny cell phone rather than the usual gold album. "That's just the next level."

Ross, whose first album comes out later this year, was cited for his best-selling single "Hustlin'." He was joined in the ring(tone) of honor by big-name acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, 50 Cent, Kanye West and others.

In all, 84 acts were cited as gold winners, 40 platinum and four as multiplatinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The awards are given based on downloads of the ringtones.

"Just a few short years ago, it was unthinkable for sales on ringtones to go platinum," said RIAA Chairman Mitch Bainwol. "But here we are. We're transforming the way we hear our music."

According to industry experts, about 10 percent of music industry revenues worldwide now come from ringtones.

Ross said when he goes into the studio in the future, the idea of making a popular ringtone will definitely be a part of the process.

"You want to do a record so catchy that everybody wants to go out and get it as a ringtone," said Ross.

The gold and platinum certification came under the title of "Master Ringtone," signifying that they were created from the original masters of the songs. The ringtones are sometimes a synthesized instrumental version rather than the artist's recording.

Busta Opens With A Bang

Chopping off his signature dreadlocks probably had nothing to do with it, but perhaps aligning with Dr. Dre's Aftermath imprint did the trick. Whatever the reason, Busta Rhymes should be sporting the widest grin he can muster today as the latest SoundScan totals show that The Big Bang will open at #1 on Billboard's album chart, marking a first in a career that spans 15 years, seven solo albums and a stint with Leaders of the New School.

Week-one sales of The Big Bang, Busta's first collection of fresh material since 2002, topped out at nearly 209,000 copies — more than enough to earn Rhymes his inaugural chart-topping debut. The success has to taste sweet for Busta, especially after his last release, 2002's It Ain't Safe No More, opened at #43 with 62,000 scans — the rapper's first LP to debut outside of the chart's top 10.

Rhymes' current retail dominance helped him usurp the Billboard crown from previous champs AFI. Second-week sales of the rockers' Decemberunderground slipped 43 percent to finish the week with 104,000 sales and the chart's #3 ranking. The Dixie Chicks' Taking the Long Way spends a second-straight week at #2 after selling 130,000 units.

There's no stopping the soundtrack to the Disney Channel original movie "High School Musical," which climbs one spot to #4 with 79,000-plus scans after 23 weeks in stores. The chart's #5 slot belongs to a newcomer: One-X, the second LP from Canadian rockers Three Days Grace, which sold 78,000 copies its first week out. The soundtrack to the animated feature "Cars" follows at #6 with 75,000 scans, just in front of Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Rick Rubin-produced double album. During its sixth week of release, Arcadium sold another 74,000 copies to finish at #7.

Rascal Flatts' Me & My Gang holds at #8 with 73,000 scans, followed at #9 by Yung Joc's New Joc City, which slides six spots with nearly 70,000 sales. Ice Cube's Laugh Now, Cry Later slips to #10 opening, selling 64,000 copies during its second week in stores.

Busta and Three Days Grace led a total of 13 new releases that will crack Billboard's top 200. Billy Joel's 12 Gardens Live, a two-disc souvenir from the Piano Man's recent 12-show stand at Madison Square Garden, opens at #14 with 44,000 scans. Widespread Panic's Earth to America put up first-week sales of close to 21,000 for a #48 bow.

Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped debuts this week at #71 with 16,000 sold, while Shadows Fall claim #83 after first-week interest in the New England metallers' Fallout From the War net 13,000-plus sales.

Regina Spektor debuts at #135 after selling nearly 8,000 copies of Begin to Hope. Anatomy Of, an album's worth of covers from Ozzfest 2006 performers Between the Buried and Me, finishes at #151 with sales just shy of the 7,000 mark. Keb' Mo's Suitcase claims the #176 slot, selling close to 6,000 copies, and Frankie J just makes the cut at #198, selling 5,000 copies of his new Spanish-language album, Un Nuevo Dia.

Loon set to release sophomore album independently

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Harlem-based rapper Loon will release his sophomore album, No Friends, on August 29th on his own Boss Up Entertainment label in conjunction with X-Ray Records. The set is the rapper's first release since leaving Bad Boy Records in 2004.

Loon said in a released statement, "The reason I called it No Friends is because this is the first project that I've put together by myself. I put it together to put something out for the streets and show some diversity and balance, things I never got to show on Bad Boy. This is me collaborating with my own artists and putting together some treats that people might not be used to be hearing from Loon."

The new project will include the Mase diss track, "What Happened To Pastor?" The two friends fell out last year and have been going at each other ever since.

Loon has traveled a long road before going the independent route. The rapper was signed to Tommy Boy Records and Arista Records before releasing his self-titled debut on Bad Boy Records in 2003.

The rapper explained how his experiences have turned him into a great businessman: "I would never acknowledge those situations as depressing or degrading or anything negative. I can honestly say through all those experiences it shaped and molded me to be a very sharp businessman."

Young Jeezy says duet album with AKON is a possibility

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Young Jeezy and Akon hooked up for the Top Ten hit "Soul Survivor" last year, and the two recently recorded a song for Young Jeezy's forthcoming album, The Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102. Jeezy told MTV.com that the two men might record a duet project in the future. The rapper said, "We got a good chemistry. A lot of people ask me why I went back with him (for my new album). It makes sense. We're cut from the same cloth. What he sings about is what I speak about. I know we make a gang of good music together. Why hold it back? It's for the 'hood."

The rapper added, "We kind of chop it up. But on 'Soul Survivor,'he surprised me. I thought it was too big of a record. I didn't get it at first. I did my verse, we sat back and listened to it, I said, 'Cool.'But I didn't get it. Now I get it."

As for the title of the new album, which is due in October, Jeezy said, "The Inspiration, I feel that more than anything. I inspire people like they inspire me. We trade off. The Inspiration is the manual. Something you pick up. I won't say like the Good Book, but it inspires you to do what you doing. The reason why I wanted Thug Motivation 102, that's what I'm still on. It ain't really about no money. I do this because this is what I love to do. I love to see people react to the things I say. I didn't want to get too far away from what I did."

Jay-Z to donate $30,000 to six schools

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rap mogul Jay-Z has donated $30,000 to be split between six schools in New York and New Jersey as part of an essay-writing contest. Over 700 students submitted essays explaining why their school should receive $5,000. Jay-Z, who is a part owner of the New Jersey Nets, selected six winners and the following schools will receive $5,000 each: Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development in Brooklyn, New York; P.S. 89 in The Bronx, New York; Liberty High School in Jersey City, New Jersey; Phifer Middle School in Pennsauken, New Jersey; Cedar Grove Memorial Middle School in Cedar Grove, New Jersey; and Health Professions & Human Services High School in Manhattan. Jay-Z and Charlotte Bobcats owner Robert Johnson launched the contest as part of a bet the two men entered during a game between the Nets and Bobcats on December 14th. The bet was to see which team would score 80 points first and when the Bobcats hit the mark first, Jay-Z's wallet took a hit.

Jay-Z said, "It was great to see the students' school spirit in their essays. They showed they want a well-rounded education in a comfortable environment. I hope that these donations help them to achieve their goals."

In related news, Jay-Z will perform a special concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 25th in honor of the 10th anniversary of his platinum debut, Reasonable Doubt.

DMX involved in another car accident, also talks 'BELLY' Sequel

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper and actor DMX just refuses to leave the driving to anyone else, and yet again he's involved in a driving incident. DMX's 2006 Chevy Suburban was rear-ended on Sunday (June11th) on the Hutchinson River Parkway outside New York City after he attempted to bypass a traffic jam by driving on the shoulder. Allhiphop.com reports that the rapper was hit when he tried to get back into the right lane from the shoulder.

Westchester County Police Commissioner Monte Long said, "There was congestion on the parkway, and he apparently was driving on the shoulder to avoid it. When he pulled back onto the right lane, the other driver didn't have time to stop."

Neither vehicle was damaged, but DMX was issued a ticket for driving on the shoulder, and he has to appear in Harrison Town Court on July 21st.

The rapper is due in a different court this Friday (June 16th) to answer speeding charges from another incident earlier this month. On June 2nd, he was pulled over for speeding in White Plains, New York, and he got tickets for speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt, and making an unsafe lane change.

The driving infractions are the latest in a long list of moving violations. DMX was placed on probation in December 2004 after he pled guilty to reckless endangerment and acknowledged he was on Valium when he crashed his SUV into a gate at John F. Kennedy International Airport during a road-rage incident. He was sentenced to a conditional discharge, which meant he needed to stay out of trouble for a year or face jail -- and he failed to stay out of trouble. After being placed on probation, DMX got two traffic violations, one for driving 104 miles an hour near his home and one for an accident with an unmarked police car and another vehicle. The rapper was eventually sentenced to 70 days behind bars.

In related news, DMX will star in the sequel to the 1998 movie Belly, which will be titled Beast. The rapper said, "It's me, Nas, and Hype Williams, the director of the film. I go and get (Nas's character in Africa). We start filming this year." The rapper added, "We got a sick story and all that. We're starting this one off how the last one ended and pick it up from there."

Eminem on board for a new movie project

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper and actor Eminem has finally found a project to follow-up his critically acclaimed debut, 8 Mile. Variety reports that he's agreed to star in the remake of the 1950's western television series Have Gun - Will Travel. The project could be set in the rapper's hometown of Detroit, and Paramount Pictures has an 18-month option to develop the project as a contemporary action drama.

Eminem's manager Paul Rosenberg said that the movie will be "revamped from the original, with some characters based loosely on ones from the series as well as nods to certain story points."

Interscope/Shady/Aftermath Films will produce the project in conjunction with Paramount, and Eminem is scheduled to be involved with the film's soundtrack and score.

Eminem, who will play a bounty hunter in the new movie, won an Academy Award for Best Song for "Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile.

Jay-Z Responds to Comments From Champagne Brand Director

NEW YORK, June 14 /PRNewswire. -- In response to comments made by Frederic Rouzaud, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal, Jay-Z and his upscale sports lounge, The 40/40 Club, have announced that they will no longer be serving Cristal Champagne and Jay-Z will further help lead the boycott against Cristal Champagne in the world of hip-hop.

Despite loyal patronage by Jay-Z, his clientele, and the entire hip-hop community, Rouzaud said in a special edition of The Economist magazine that the company observes its association with the rap world with "curiosity and serenity." Even though Jay and other rappers continually support the brand by including Cristal in their lyrics, as Jay did in his number 1 hit "Hard Knock Life," Rouzaud has labeled the name-checks as "unwelcome attention."

"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'hip-hop' culture as "unwelcome attention." I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life," said Jay-Z.

Just as Rouzaud stated, "I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business," Jay-Z and the 40/40 Club will now be serving only Krug and Dom Perignon to their customers seeking high end champagne products.

Man accidentally kills friend while listening to Diplomats

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

A New Orleans man accidentally shot and killed a childhood friend while listening to the song ".40 Cal" by .40 Cal from the Diplomats. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Ronnie Webber of Kenner, Louisiana, was playing with a 40-caliber semi-automatic handgun when it fired and killed his close friend, Jonathan Beasley. The two men were listening to the song ".40 Cal." by rapper .40 Cal, which was included on the 2004 Diplomats album Diplomatic Immunity 2. Webber called 911 and attempted to perform CPR on his friend, but Beasley was pronounced dead a short time later at a nearby hospital. Webber has been charged with negligent homicide.

The victim's mother, Annie Beasley, told the paper, "They don't need to own guns because they don't even know what to do with them. They're too young. Too many of them are killing each other."

Rapper son of the late Eazy-E arrested

COMPTON, Calif. - The son of the late rapper Eazy-E was arrested for investigation of possessing a concealed weapon, authorities said Sunday.

Eric Wright Jr. — who goes by the name Lil' Eazy-E in his own recently launched hip-hop career — is the firstborn son of Eazy-E, a founding member of the pioneering gangster rap group N.W.A. who died of AIDS in 1995.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies pulled over Wright, 22, for a traffic violation near Compton on Saturday night, Lt. Michael Alerich said.

"Mr. Wright was in possession of a firearm and he was arrested," Alerich said. "Two other guys in the car were also arrested, one for possession of a firearm and the other for a probation violation."

Earlier this year, Wright released his first album, "Prince of Compton."

Young Jeezy to release New Album in October

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Young Jeezy is hard at work on the follow-up to his platinum debut, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101. The rapper told MTV.com, "October, that's all I can say. I'mma keep it real low-key. The name of the album is The Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102."

Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States and solidified Jeezy's status as a major player. But if you ask Young Jeezy, he sees himself more as a motivational speaker than as a rapper, and he thinks people relate to him because he's real: "I mean, I think it's 'cause I'm real, you know what I mean? I ain't really no rapper like that. I'mma real dude, so I think at the end of the day, a lot of people can speak good about me, and my street credibility is where it's supposed to be."

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 8, 2006 - Cultural icon Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter will be featured in a 60-second TV ad tonight during the NBA Finals as part of HP's "The Computer is Personal Again" marketing campaign.

The spot, which makes its global debut during the June 8 game on ABC (9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT), will focus on the multiple facets of Jay-Z’s professional and personal life that are enhanced by computer technology. These include mixing music and discovering new talent as a record company president and chief executive officer, sharing vacation photos, reviewing the design of new arena plans for Brooklyn, N.Y., planning the itinerary for an upcoming world tour, and reviewing his retirement portfolio.

Launched in the United States on May 9, the TV and web elements of the campaign feature celebrities, noteworthy business people and other recognizable figures revealing how their PCs are personal to them through the content they keep on their systems.

Jay-Z first became interested in HP computers after seeing the impact they have on students involved in the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund. Additional personalities will be made public in the coming weeks, with the ads and original, behind-the-scenes online extras available in the “Viewing Room” at www.hp.com/personal .

The Game's manager avoids jail time

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

The Game's manager, James "Jimmy Henchmen" Rosemond, avoided jail time yesterday (Tuesday, June 6th), when he was sentenced to three years unsupervised probation and ordered to pay a $2500 fine by a Maryland judge for assaulting a Washington, D.C., disc jockey during a January 2005 appearance at a radio station with the Game. SOHH.com reports that Rosemond and a group of men allegedly attacked Xzulu "The Big Lipped Bandit" of WKYS-FM in Lanham, Maryland, after the on-air personality made a comment about Rosemond's headset.

Rosemond's lawyers, Scott Srebnick and William Brennan, said, "The judge's decision to place Mr. Rosemond on unsupervised probation was in recognition that he is and continues to be a positive influence within the community. We are thankful that the judge saw this case for what it was."

Queen Latifah and singer Bryce Wilson were in the courtroom to lend their support to Rosemond during his sentencing hearing.

Rosemond also manages Brandy, Sheek Louch, Guerrilla Black, and others.

Ashanti Sued by Former Manager

By: Janine Coveney

Singer Ashanti has been sued by a former manager who claims that she is owed millions of dollars for helping the singer's career. Linda Berk filed suit in Manhattan federal court Tuesday, alleging that she had guided Ashanti, now 25, from an unknown minor to a "music and entertainment superstar" before her contract was terminated in May 2003.

Berk says she first met the aspiring singer in 1993 and signed an initial contract with Ashanti's mother, Tina Douglas, establishing Berk as co-manager of the star back in 1999. Just four years later, she was informed the contract would be terminated, according to the suit.

A spokesman for Ashanti told Reuters that the contract simply expired. "The contract naturally expired and we didn't renew it," he stated.

Ashanti won a Grammy in 2003 for her solo debut, Ashanti. She landed atop the R&B charts with her single "Foolish" as well as with "Always On Time" with Ja Rule and "What's Luv" with Fat Joe. She released Concrete Rose in 2004, and Collectables, featuring both new and old material, appeared in 2005.

The Long Island, New York native has met with some hard times of late. In April her 20-year-old cousin and personal assistant, Quinshae Snead, was killed in a car crash in Johannesburg, South Africa, causing her to cancel shows.

Back in January, she filed a federal lawsuit over what she says is the unauthorized international release of Can't Stop, which features demo tapes she recorded about eight years ago. She's asking for $1 million in damages for unfair competition, invasion of privacy, trademark infringement, and lost wages, among other charges

Jay-Z launching Casino in Las Vegas

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Hip hop mogul Jay-Z might be getting into the gaming business, and he's been spotted eyeing several possible locations in Las Vegas for a new casino. New York's Daily News reports the rapper has been meeting with investors who are familiar with the gambling industry. A source told the paper, "The 40/40 Club in Atlantic City has been doing great since it opened, and the one in New York is still booming. There's no reason not to expand."

A spokesman for the rapper confirmed that Jay-Z is looking to expand globally and possibly make the move to the casino business. Ron Berkowitz said, "There is talk of a possible 40/40 Club casino. There is definite expansion into the Far East, into Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and South Korea. By 2008 they will all be built."

Jay-Z has also partnered with Magic Johnson, and the duo will be bringing a 40/40 to Los Angeles later this year.

The "What's My Name?" singer, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was ticketed Friday afternoon after cops spotted the star's 2001 Chevy Suburban driving at "unreasonable speeds" and making unsafe lane changes, Deputy Commissioner Daniel Jackson told the Associated Press.

While there was no word on exactly how many miles per hour the rapper managed to hit, upon pulling him over, White Plains police also learned that DMX was driving without a license and not wearing a seatbelt.

Clearly, he's not a follower of "click it or ticket."

The 35-year-old rapper was ordered to return to court June 16.

The judicial face time is nothing new for the rap sheet-holding rapper, who has been arrested several times in recent years, all coincidentally revolving around bust-ups with various modes of transportation.

Just last month, the hip-hopster was arrested at London's Heathrow airport after allegedly making verbal threats against the cabin crew on a Britain-bound flight.

The rapper was taken into custody upon arriving at the international hub after causing an onboard ruckus and refusing, yet again, to buckle his seatbelt, choosing instead to launch into a tirade at flight attendants attempting to strap him up. British police neither fined nor issued any penalties to the law-breaker, but did note the incident on DMX's permanent record.

The virtually punishment-free wrist slap was a change of pace for the trouble-prone rapper, who didn't fare nearly so well in his other infractions.

In 2004, the sometime actor scored a double whammy, being busted for plowing his SUV through a security gate at New York's JFK airport and attempting to talk his way out of the smash-up by telling bystanders he was an undercover federal agent.

DMX later copped to the deed and was sentenced to 70 days in jail, the last 10 tacked on for good measure after the rapper arrived late to his sentencing date. He was released in January for good behavior after serving just one month behind bars.

But the rapper's bad car karma doesn't stop there.

His transportation-wrecking track record also includes an arrest last year for driving with a suspended license after the rapper plowed his SUV--a different one, presumably--into a car that in turn rammed a police cruiser. For that incident, DMX was fined $500 and logged yet more time behind bars.

G-unit's DJ Whoo Kid and R&B Newcomer Kev Samples Proclaim the "Death of R&B"

New York (PRWEB) June 2, 2006 -- Kev Samples, a hot new R&B singer today released a mix-tape with DJ Whoo Kid of G-Unit proclaiming the “Death of R&B”. The 12 track mix-tape features parodies and scathing disses of some of R&B’s current stars including Jaime Foxx, Ne-Yo, T-Paine and Ray J. Atlanta native Kev Samples throws down the gauntlet on R&B’s current stars as he states his disdain for the current state of R&B because of the lack of quality music. “The Death of R&B” is the prelude to Samples upcoming album “Screaming for More” to be released on Outlandish Entertainment this September.

Samples pokes fun at T-Paine’s singing ability and song content with “Only Tricks Love a Stripper” while stating Ray J received the leftover signing talents from big sister Brandy on his parody of “One Wish”. Kev Samples also demonstrates his vocal range and versatility on remakes of “I Ain’t Gonna Leave” by Trey Songz and “Let Me Hold You” by Bow Wow and Omarion

“I am tired of all the watered down R&B being released,” said Kev Samples. “I want to take it back to the days where people actually listened to the lyrics and could relate to the song instead of waiting for a catchy hook”.

Kev Samples is currently in the studio putting the final touches on his debut album, “Screaming for More”, which will include production from Scott Storch, Cool & Dre and Red Spyda amongst others.

Ludacris and Kanye West Win Copyright Infringment Trial

By: Nick Tsolkas

Ludacris and Kanye West won their copyright infringement case Thursday (June 1) after a jury concluded their 2003 hit "Stand Up" did not copy a song by New Jersey rappers I.O.F. "I hope the plaintiffs enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame," Ludacris said after the verdict was announced. "This whole experience is proof to me of why I will always fight for what I believe in."

I.O.F. claimed that the chorus to "Stand Up," from Ludacris's double-platinum album Chicken-N-Beer, was similar to their song "Straight Like That," which was recorded in 2000.

Yung Joc Says Diddy wasn't sold on him until he visited Atlanta

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Atlanta-based rapper Yung Joc will release his debut album, New Joc City, next Tuesday (June 6th) on the Bad Boy Entertainment label in conjunction with the Warner Music Group. The project's first single, "It's Goin'Down," is the Number One song this week on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart.

Yung Joc recently explained how he got his deal. After signing with Atlanta-based Block Entertainment, he took a trip to New York City to audition for Sean "Diddy" Combs and Bad Boy executive Harve Pierre. Joc said he left New York City without getting an answer: "They come to the A (Atlanta). They in the club... 'cause they had heard the single. They was like, 'Yeah it's cool. We think we can do something with it.'We hadn't done nothing yet. They come to the A. They're at a party in Atlanta, and the record come on and the whole club go crazy."

Joc added: "So next thing you know, we all getting two-ways first thing in the morning, like, I mean, e-mails, like, 4 a.m., like, 'Yo, I didn't know the record was this stupid.' So by the blessing of God, opposed to us just doing a regular deal, artist deal, we end up landing a major label deal, which is Block Entertainment through Bad Boy South and the Warner Music Group."

New Joc City features guest appearances by Marques Houston, Lil Wayne, Cheri Dennis, Jody Breeze, Duke, Big Gee, and Dro.

Proof Shooter will not face murder charges

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Mario Etheridge, the bouncer who shot and killed rapper Proof in a Detroit nightclub on April 11th, will not face murder charges. The Associated Press reports that Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Etheridge acted lawfully in defense of another man during the incident, which also left Etheridge's cousin Keith Bender dead. Worthy said, "The evidence clearly shows that Mario Etheridge acted in lawful self-defense of another when he shot DeShaun Holton (Proof). Once the gunshots started, everything happened fairly quickly."

According to initial reports, Proof, who died with a blood-alcohol level of 0.32 percent, allegedly pistol-whipped Bender before shooting the bouncer in the face. The rapper was in turn shot and killed by Bender's cousin Mario Etheridge, who was also working as a bouncer at the nightclub. Etheridge allegedly fired twice in the air before shooting the rapper.

Authorities are still investigating where Etheridge got the gun from and whether or not he was carrying two weapons.

Etheridge is currently charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in a building. If found guilty of all charges, he could face up to nine years behind bars. He's currently out on $70,000 bail, and he's due back in court on Friday (June 2nd).

Chamillionaire Strikes Platinum

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Chamillionaire's major label debut, Sound Of Revenge, was recently certified platinum for sales of a million copies. The album's latest single, "Ridin'Dirty" featuring Krayzie Bone, is the Number One song in the country this week, as it bumped Rihanna's "S.O.S." from the top slot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

While Chamillionaire's crossover success is new, the rapper has enjoyed success in the past as a member of the Color Changing Click with Paul Wall. He explained how his early days on Swishahouse Records watching Slim Thug paid off in the long run: "You know, I definitely feel like I learned a lot. You know, and then even Slim Thug with his situation, he was at Swishahouse, and he broke off and started doing his own things. I got to see what happened and him turn nothing into something, and I was just watching all that happen in so many different directions."

Chamillionaire added: "You had J. Prince out there doing a lot of stuff with Rap-A-Lot. You know, I was just sitting there, just, you know, being a student to the game. Watching it and learning it before I got into it. And then when I got into it, it was time to go, you know?"

Eminem to Release New Mixtape

By: Yves Erwin Salomon

After releasing a greatest-hits set last fall titled Curtain Call, Eminem was unsure as to whether or not he would retire. Following the death of his best friend Proof last month, there was further speculation that Eminem might call it quits, but the rapper is back. MTV.com reports that Eminem has hooked up with DJ Whookid for a new mixtape called The Re-Up. Whookid said, "Em's s--t is gonna be ridiculous. I'm gonna make so much money, I don't know why I'm going on tour. The return of the Emster and the whole Shady going hard. Everybody is on point. Obie (Trice), Stat Quo, all their artists. It's gonna be more of a hungry Shady, back to the grind. Plus me and Alchemist are putting it together, so it will be ridiculous."

The mixtape deejay added, "It will be extra songs I'll bootleg on something else later. But the fact that Em is coming back, I'm just happy to be a part of that."

The Re-Up will be released later this week.
