  • Styles P comfortable holding down the title

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

The Lox's Styles P latest album, Time Is Money, entered the Billboard 200 albums chart this week at Number 79 after selling 46,000 copies its first week in stores. While at a glance the numbers may low, when you factor in the rapper's lack of a single or video and consider that the album is three years old, it paints a different picture. During the three year delay, several of the album's songs have turned up on mixtapes.

Styles P has developed a reputation as a no nonsense rapper and he's even rapped about being the hardest rapper out there. He recently shared his thoughts on holding down the title. The rapper said: "Nah I don't really mind, I mean it comes along with it. If you say something like that I have to be fully prepared for whatever comes. To tell you the truth, it's like people been....I've been wondering why for so long nobody ain't been going for it."

The rapper added: "Like they start a little bit then they just leave me alone. But nah it don't matter 'cause it keeps me on my toes, man. I don't mind staying on my toes, man."

  • Sprint Employee Fired Over Ludacris Booking, Claims Racism

A former Sprint Nextel employee has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the company claiming she was fired for hiring Ludacris for a work-related event without her boss' consent.
According to the Kansas City Star, Elizabeth Henry claims she was asked to organize a Las Vegas party as a reward for Sprint's top call center employees. The workers allegedly requested an African-American entertainer at the event.

Henry asserts her boss green-lighted two entertainers, Ludacris and LL Cool J, but after another employee allegedly told her boss that "she must be into the black thing," her boss became concerned.

Henry claims she assured her boss that Ludacris would perform according to "PG-13 standards," but if they were still a concern, she would get another black performer.

Her boss allegedly responded that any black performer would be controversial. Henry, who is white, called the remark discriminatory.

Henry claims she was then interrogated for five hours and was fired later that same day.

"Her boss said she was terminating her for insubordination," Brendan J. Donelon, Henry's lawyer, told The Star. "She said it had to do with the fact that she retained Ludacris as the entertainer without her permission.

"I think what happened is that her boss approved it and didn't think anything of it until somebody said, 'Hey, have you ever listened to their music?'" he added.

Henry's suit is seeking unspecified damages. Sprint officials could not be reached for comment.

The lox hoping to release new album this spring

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

The Lox, which is comprised of Sheek Louch, Jadakiss, and Styles P, have been working on a new album which they hope to release in April. First, however, the group has to resolve all of their issues with their label, Interscope Records.

Styles P told us: "So if you don't hear from the Lox like if we don't work that out, then you'll just hear from me until we politically fix the Lox up."

Styles released his oft-delayed sophomore solo album, Time Is Money, last week but the rapper is almost done with another new album. Styles explained that he'd like to go on a different kind of tour this time out. He said: "I want to kind of do a hood underground tour. Got to get somebody, the perfect person to set it up. I want to do like a street underground tour like the holes in the wall, like the hip hop spots and all that. I want to do that."

The Lox were signed to Bad Boy Entertainment in 1996 by Sean "Diddy" Combs. The group released their platinum debut album, Money, Power, & Respect, in 1998, and they wrote several hits for Combs, including his biggest, "All About The Benjamins."

The group fell out with Combs in 1999 and the Lox's production company, Ruff Ryders, paid Combs approximately $3 million to buy out their contract. The Lox subsequently released a gold album, We Are The Streets, on Interscope Records in 2000.

James Brown, the 'Godfather of Soul,' dies at 73

-- James Brown, the legendary R&B belter, a singer and songwriter who created a foundation for funk and provided the roots of rap, a man of many nicknames but a talent that can only be described as one of a kind, is dead.

Brown died early Monday at Atlanta's Emory Crawford Long Hospital of congestive heart failure, his agent said. He was 73.

"The most difficult thing is for me to stand here without him. We were a team," Charles Bobbit, Brown's personal manager, told reporters Monday.

Pausing to fight back tears, Bobbit said he was at Brown's bedside when he died.

Brown told him, "I'm going away tonight."

Then he took three long, quiet breaths, and closed his eyes, Bobbit said.

Brown was in Atlanta for a dental appointment when he fell ill and was admitted to the hospital over the weekend for pneumonia.

"It appears what happened is that he did die of a heart attack as a result of his pneumonia," the singer's agent Frank Copsidas told CNN Radio.

Brown -- known variously as "the Godfather of Soul," "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business," "Soul Brother Number One" and "Mr. Dynamite" (and often introduced as all of the above) -- was known for his elastic dance moves, razor-sharp musicianship and all-stops-out performances. (Watch the incomparable Brown perform )

He was, literally, an impossible act to follow: The Rolling Stones were said to have been terrified to come on after Brown in "The T.A.M.I. Show," a 1964 concert that appeared on film the next year. ("Nobody could follow me," Brown told "T.A.M.I. Show" director Steve Binder, according to a Los Angeles Times article.) Brown's performance in that show even earned an ovation from the backing band.

"You have the Rolling Stones on the same stage, all of the important rock acts of the day, doing their best -- and James Brown comes out and destroys them," producer Rick Rubin wrote in Rolling Stone. (i-Report: Your thoughts on James Brown)

His influence was broad and deep. He was a soul innovator, bringing a churchy rawness to R&B with his early hits "Please, Please, Please" and "Think." He essentially created funk with mid-'60s songs such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Cold Sweat." His grooves were sampled by rappers and hip-hop artists. (Gallery: James Brown through the years)

He was tough on his own backing band, the Famous Flames -- which included saxophonist Maceo Parker, guitarist Jimmy Nolen and drummer Clyde Stubblefield -- famously fining them if they missed a cue. They even walked out on him in 1969; Brown simply recruited a new band, which included bassist Bootsy Collins. (Many of the Flames later returned; they were renamed the J.B.'s.)

He provided the ground that much of black music -- much of pop music -- stands on. (Story: James Brown's greatest hits)

"James presented obviously the best grooves," rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy once told The Associated Press. "To this day, there has been no one near as funky. No one's coming even close." (Watch "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business" do his thing )

Despite much-publicized personal problems that included a rap sheet and drug troubles, he also was a community leader. In the 1960s, he was a voice for calm during a period of urban riots; J. Anthony Lukas' book on Boston race relations, "Common Ground," notes that a 1968 Brown performance the day after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination helped keep the Massachusetts city from exploding.

Later, dismayed by the school shootings of the late '90s, he spoke out against violence in schools, even writing a song, "Killing's Out and School's In."

"We need to protect the kids by giving them something to do," Brown told CNN in 2001. "[It's about] making them interested, making them love mom and dad more, love the family more, love themselves more and love their school. So there won't have to be killing in school."

    'Superhuman determination'
James Brown was born on May 3, 1933, in Barnwell, South Carolina. His early years were rough. Abandoned by his immediate family, he was taken in by friends and relatives and grew up in an "ill-repute area" of Augusta, Georgia, he once said. He shined shoes and danced for change, and he also served time in a reform school for breaking into cars, rescued by the family of friend Bobby Byrd.

Byrd invited Brown to join his group, the Gospel Starlighters, which later changed its name to the Flames and then the Famous Flames. The group was signed to King Records and released its song "Please, Please, Please" in early 1956. The song hit the R&B Top 10 and the group worked it hard, touring the "chitlin circuit" -- as the series of African-American clubs and theaters was called -- incessantly.

"What made Brown succeed where hundreds of others failed was his superhuman determination, working the chitlin circuit to death, sharpening his band, and keeping an eye on new trends," Richie Unterberger wrote on Allmusic.com.

A second hit, "Try Me," gave the group staying power, and from there it was hit after hit: "Think," "This Old Heart," "Bewildered," "Lost Someone," "Night Train," "Prisoner of Love." Brown eventually scored more than 50 Top 10 hits on the R&B charts. Seventeen hit No. 1.

Despite the occasional pop hit, crossover stardom eluded him until 1963, when "Live at the Apollo" -- still considered one of the great live albums of all time -- hit No. 2 on Billboard's album chart. In 1965, Brown hit the pop Top 10 with the groundbreaking "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," a song that incorporated the intricate start-and-stop rhythms that would come to define funk, and his mainstream stardom was sealed.

Brown's music was bold: 1968's "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)" was a defiant statement of black pride; 1970's "Get Up (I Feel Like Being Like A) Sex Machine" was blatantly sexual; 1971's "Hot Pants" leering. His sound was unlike anything on the charts and was copied by many artists, including Sly and the Family Stone and Parliament -- who, in turn, gave it their own spin.

    Influence on disco, hip-hop, rap
Brown went into eclipse in the mid-'70s. His 1974 song "The Payback" was his last Top 40 hit for 11 years, and even his appearances on the R&B/black music charts were irregular. He returned to the Top 10 with "Living in America," the theme from "Rocky IV," in 1985, but it was his last hurrah on the pop chart.

Brown also was plagued by personal problems. In the late '80s he was in the news for being accused of assault and battery by his then-wife. In 1988, high on PCP, he led police on a chase through two states before officers shot out the tires of his truck. He received a six-year prison sentence, serving 15 months in prison and 10 months in a work release program before being paroled in 1991, according to the AP.

But his musical influence was undeniable. He was part of the first group of artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He won Grammys for "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "Living in America." He received a Kennedy Center honor in 2003.

    He knew what he'd accomplished.

"Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown; you know what I'm saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 percent of their music is me," he told the AP in 2003.

Brown's traditional performance close -- wailing, falling to his knees, being covered with a cape, led almost off stage, still singing quietly, only to rise again, returned to the center, bringing the screaming crowd to its feet -- is indelible. It suggested nothing short of a life force, one that lives on in his many followers.

Which was what James Brown hoped for.

"I would like to pass on the want to do something," he told CNN in 2000. "The need is there. Good lyrics are good things, but I would like to pass on that drive, that vigorous undying determination."

R.I.P. James Brown. We thank you for your contribution to R&B, Hip Hop and more!

Diddy in Doghouse Over Fur Coat Fiasco

The Humane Society of the United States Investigation Reveals Sean John Jacket, Advertised as 'Faux Fur' at Macy's, is Fur From Canines

WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released the results of a mass spectrometry test today conducted on a Sean John Hooded Snorkel Jacket sold on Macys.com that was originally advertised as having an "imitation rabbit fur collar" and materials identified as "faux fur."

The jacket, part of a clothing line by Sean "Diddy" Combs, was labeled as containing "raccoon" fur, but has now been found to be fur from a canine species known as "raccoon dog." Macy's informed The HSUS that the company has pulled the mislabeled Sean John garments from its department stores and online shop. The group is urging all retailers to follow the lead of Macy's.

"First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "This is an industry-wide problem, and our investigation demonstrates that retailers and designers aren't paying close enough attention to composition of the fur trim they are selling. It's especially problematic when the fur is sourced from China where domestic dogs and cats and raccoon dogs are killed in gruesome ways, even skinned alive. The safest course of action is for Sean Combs and other designers and retailers to stop using fur trim. That single act would solve the problems we have uncovered."

The news comes on the heels of other mass spectrometry tests conducted by The HSUS on a range of fur-trimmed jackets -- from retailers such as Burlington Coat Factory, Bloomingdale's, J.C. Penney, Macy's, and Saks Fifth Avenue, and from designers and clothing lines such as Baby Phat, Andrew Marc, MaxMara, and Calvin Klein -- revealing that most of the jackets labeled as "raccoon" or "coyote" from China in fact contain fur from raccoon dogs. Of the ten garments tested by The HSUS, nine tested positive as raccoon dog fur and were mislabeled, a violation of federal law.

Due to the lack of animal welfare laws and prevalence of garment factories, China currently ranks as the leading exporter of fur and supplies half of all of the fur products that enter the United States for sale. Animals documented being raised and killed in China -- in barbaric ways -- include dogs, cats, foxes, mink, and, of particular note, raccoon dogs, a species of canine whose fur resembles raccoon. An HSUS investigation in China in 1998 revealed that fur sellers in China will attach almost any label their customers want on their coats.

The Fur Products Labeling Act prohibits the advertising or sale of any fur product that is falsely or misleadingly labeled, and authorizes the Federal Trade Commission to seek criminal penalties, impose fines of up to $5,000 per violation and to seize mislabeled products.

The HSUS is also calling on Congress to amend the Dog and Cat Protection Act -- which bans the sale of dog or cat fur in the United States -- to include raccoon dog, since the animals are so inhumanely killed and the species is similar to domesticated dogs. Raccoon dogs are indigenous to Asia, including eastern Siberia and Japan, and are sometimes called Asiatic raccoons, Finn raccoons, or tanuki. "It would be jarring to the public to shop in a marketplace where dog and cat fur is banned, but coats labeled as 'raccoon dog' are still legally sold," added Pacelle.

Each year, over 50 million animals worldwide, such as dogs, cats, raccoon dogs, mink, foxes, bobcats, beavers, raccoons, and lynx, are killed for their fur. By supporting fur-free designers, sponsoring fashion design contests and advertising in industry publications, The HSUS's Fur-Free Campaign works with both consumers and the fashion industry to encourage decisions that reject the use of fur and instead promote warm and fashionable alternatives. To learn about The HSUS's Fur-Free Campaign and what you can do to take action, visit our website http://www.furfree.hsus.org/.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization with nearly 10 million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, disaster preparedness and response, wildlife and habitat protection, marine mammals, animals in research, equine protection and farm animal welfare. The HSUS protects all animals through education, investigation, litigation, legislation, advocacy and field work. The nonprofit organization is based in Washington and has field representatives and offices across the country. On the web at http://www.hsus.org/.

  • Styles P has mixed emotions about the release of new album

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Lox member and D-Block co-CEO Styles P finally released his sophomore album, Time Is Money, on Tuesday, December 19th. The rapper has had to wait three years to release the set while he dealt with label politics of Interscope Records and the Ruff Ryders.

Styles P told us of the delayed release: "I mean obviously I wish it was three years ago. And I wish nobody never heard the songs, some of the songs that they heard before. But as an artist I feel great, as a business person I'm like 'aaaah.'"

The rapper added: "'Cause on the business side I know what you need to do good, you know what I mean? Like I don't have a single. I don't have a video. I don't have any of them things but then I got a good strong faith in myself and the fans that love me. So I'm like I got mixed emotions on it but overall I guess I would say I'm more glad to have it out so the fans get the opportunity to hear the songs that they didn't hear."

Time Is Money features guest appearances from Akon, Gerald Levert, Jagged Edge, J -Hood, Mario Winans, Floetry's Marsha Ambrosius, Rashad, Talib Kweli and The Lox with production by Swizz Beatz, Akon, and Scott Storch

  • Nas' EX working on reality show

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Nas'ex-girlfriend and mother of his 12 year-old daughter, Destiny, is working on a reality show as a follow-up to her recently released tell-all book, It's No Secret. In the tell-all, Bryan describes how she cheated on Nas with NBA star Allen Iverson and rapper Jay-Z.

Bryan told Essence magazine, "Telling all is a full-time job. I still love SC (Jay-Z), and I still love Nas. Love is an energy that can never be destroyed."

She added, "It wasn't my decision to make this a public affair. I'm not an MC; I can't go in the studio and respond to individuals. So when Jay-Z and Nas recorded songs about me, they opened this door."

In related news, Nas released his new album, Hip Hop Is Dead, on Tuesday, December 19th. The latest single from the project is the title track, "Hip Hop is Dead."

Wu-Tang Clan reunion in the works

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Staten-Island New York-based rap collective, the Wu-Tang Clan, is allegedly in talks with Steve Rifkind to sign with his SRC Records, which is distributed by Universal. Rifkind signed the group to an unprecedented contract in the early '90s which allowed each group member the flexibility to sign as a solo act elsewhere.

The Wu-Tang Clan last release was 2001's Iron Flag which was released on Rifkind's Loud Records.

Prior to the reports that the group was possibly hooking back up with Rifkind, the RZA and GZA shared that they wanted to do another album to bring some closure to the situation.

RZA explained that the group plans to record one more album. He said:"We are preparing to do one more album collectively and that's for closure, really. That's for closure so our fans can have closure. I think that the fans don't have closure on Wu-Tang and I think they deserve it and I think one more album should fulfill it. If the group itself feels the vibe and want to continue that route, maybe two more albums."

GZA added the whole group hasn't actually discussed the topic together: "I think it's probably a thought, the same thought is in all our heads but it wasn't shared amongst each other. I mean I spoke to RZA about it, you know it was like, 'We need to bang 'em one more time, you know and then we can wrap it up.'We need to do that but the group as a whole we haven't spoke about it."

  • Will.I.AM says Black Eyed Peas at work on new album

    By: Janine Coveney

Grammy-nominated producer, writer and rapper Will.I.Am is juggling a number of projects, but he says that the Black Eyed Peas have already begun work on the follow-up to their multi-platinum 2005 album, Monkey Business. He says that the set will be out in the fourth quarter of 2007 and will hit a few more serious notes than the material from the party-friendly last album.

Will.I.Am says that the project will be "a thinking record," much like the track "Where Is The Love" from Monkey Business, but will still be upbeat. He told us: "That's almost finished, that'll come out this time next year. Just the sentiment that 'Where Is The Love'gave you. It's still a fun record, you know, Black Eyed Peas'next record is fun and it's uplifting. It's gonna be the record that you drive to work with, go to lunch with, get ready to go out with. It's that record, you know, that you live life to."

The producer adds that the group will continue to record as much as 40 songs, many on the road as they finish up their tour this month. The album has no title yet, and Will.I.Am says it's too early to start thinking about guests and collaborators.

Meanwhile, the Peas recently released the interactive DVD set Live From Sydney To Vegas.

Ludacris and Big Boi weigh in on hip hop is dead debate

Ludacris and OutKast's Big Boi are the two latest rappers to weigh in on the debate sparked by the title of Nas'latest album, Hip Hop Is Dead...The N. Ludacris told MTV.com, "I don't feel that hip-hop is dead. I feel like the South is keeping it alive. What we do is hip-hop. Some people may not feel that way. You gotta respect some people's opinion, but hey. You gotta stay to your opinion in the game."

Ludacris added, "Because the South is dominating it right now. Saying that hip-hop is dead is like saying the South is dead too. They may not like some of the music going on in the South. But everybody in the South is saying, 'We are keeping it alive.'... At the end of the day, hip-hop is what you make it. What we do in the South isn't hip-hop -- that's what some people think. We think it is. Some people say it's country-rap tunes. Hip-hop is what you make it."

Big Boi also shared his thoughts on the state of the game. He said, "Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but if it's dead, why is the South boomin'? We got the ball right now. ... But nobody better never come out their mouth wrong about me or my homeboy Andre 3000 ever. Ever! Tell them. We don't even play. I'll slap the s**t out of you. That's why you never hear about OutKast getting into nothing."

Nas' Hip Hop Is Dead...The N hits stores today, December 19th

    By: Janine Coveney

Gnarls Barkley's summer smash "Crazy" has been named the Best Song of the Year by Rolling Stone in the magazine's list of the best 100 tracks of 2006. Cee-Lo told us that the track struck him the first time he heard it: "I found the track -- Danger usually, you know, plays me 15 to 20 different things and I may like six and may love three, you know what I mean? The rapper explained that it's all part of growing up. He said: "I mean it's all about us paying attention, you know what I'm sayin'? We got to be responsible, you know what I mean? We can't be. You know we getting too old to be running around here acting like we still retarded and crazy. You know it's fun when we're teenagers."

The rapper added: "But at some point you got to grab a hold of your destiny and know what's right for you. Stop being a follower. We got to be leaders."

  • Dame Dash says he's disappointed with Jay-Z

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Damon Dash hasn't said much since he and Jay-Z went their separate ways but with the release of Jay-Z's new album, Kingdom Come, and the song "Lost Ones," Dash has felt the need to address the situation. In the song, "Lost Ones," Jay-Z raps that "N***as wasn't on they day job," as well as "I heard muthaf***ers saying they made Hov/ Made Hov say, 'OK, so make another Hov'/ N***as wasn't playing they day role/ So we parted ways like Ben and J. Lo."

When asked about the song, Dash said he also thought the song was about him and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. He said, "Me and Jay did too much together for me to have beef with him. If he was talking about me, I would be disappointed. I wish he would take me aside and tell me. That's what grown men do. We done so much, for me to have beef with him would be crazy. It would make everything I did look corny. ... Guys like us don't talk about other guys on a track. We pull each other to the side and speak."

Dash, who hasn't spoken to Jay-Z in some time, added, "I was just a little disappointed. I don't feel nothing against him. I think it was a bad decision on his part. I would never air my laundry like that. It damages the history that we made. I got nothing bad to say about that man, just that scenario. Could you imagine 10 years ago that Jay would be making a record about Dame Dash? I used to eat at his house for Thanksgiving. I know his mother, his whole family. I got no beef. We made way too much money together. I almost felt sorry for him. It's like he made an excuse for what he did. We used to have a lot of fun. The absence of Dame Dash is critical."

Jay-Z publicly addressed the situation in Complex magazine. He said, "At the end of the day, when I look around and I know I'm on the side of right or what I believe is right in my heart ... sometimes you think you're doing right but you're not. But what you believe to be right in your heart, that's your truths. Then certain things happen that go even further then that, and you know you was right. The way people carry themselves after, it's like, 'Wow.'I wouldn't have did that. He laughs. A true friend wouldn't have done that."

Since the Roc-A-Fella Records split, Dash has turned his attention to fashion and launching his online community, BlockSavvy.com. He said, "I don't wanna be yelling all my life. How loud did I have to yell to say that Jay-Z was the man and the best rapper of all time? Nobody believed me until it happened 10 years later. You saw what happened when I brought Kanye over. ... I love music, but the people in the music don't wanna work. I know this. I'm in the fashion industry. I haven't had to shout for two years."
