Remy Ma Speaks Out on Fat Joe

If Fat Joe has his way, former Terror Squad femcee Remy Ma won't be signing to G-Unit anytime soon. The self-proclaimed "free agent" is currently working on her next project, which she has yet to find a home for. But details of the split with the Terror Squad and Fat Joe were revisited during an interview with Miss jones of NY's Hot 97 radio station Wednesday morning. So BET.com caught up with Remy Ma for an exclusive interview to find out just how Fat Joe was blocking her hustle.

Last year, Remy was unhappy with monetary decisions made by Fat Joe and his Terror Squad label, so she asked to be released from his SRC/Universal imprint. But Joe only agreed to do so on certain conditions. "'I don't want you to sign with 50 Cent. You can't do a song with him. You can't record with Olivia, with Mobb Deep.' I can't even have a song produced by Havoc," Remy says of the agreement. "All these dudes - their government names are in my release contract that I can not work with them, from Sha Money to Whoo Kid. I could show you the paperwork where it says 'Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson.'"

Remy did not want to let contract provisions stand in the way of her release from the label, so she agreed to sign it. "My whole point was money wasn't right. Nobody wasn't gettin' treated right. I seen the path we were going over the years. It was a dead-end street. And he started feeling himself, like, 'I'm the Don. I'm the man, I don't need nobody'," Remy reveals.

According to Remy, history proves that female rappers who come out under male MCs and stay under them are cursed. "Look at every female rapper and who they came out under, and look at where they at now. I'm trying to break the mold. I refuse to be part of that pattern."

  • New Kanye Album Coming Sooner Than Expected

Kanye West's forthcoming album, "Graduation," is coming sooner than expected. The album, originally due in September, has been pushed slightly ahead to a late August release, according to Def Jam.

West leaked the news through a recently released, 25-track Internet mixtape called "Can't Tell Me Nothing," which features him rapping over such intriguing samples as Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and Peter Bjorn & John's indie hit "Young Folks."

"Can't Tell Me Nothing," the first single from "Graduation," was co-produced by West and DJ Toomp. A Hype Williams-directed video for the song debuted last Friday on West's Web site.

As previously reported, the new album will also include a collaboration with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin on the song "Homecoming."

Dipset, Bad Boy & Ruff Ryders Take Their Game To The Blacktop in Harlem Tournament

Harlem's legendary basketball tournament the "Kingdome Classic," boasting basketball teams comprised of street hoop stars and NBA athletes, will kick off next month.

The event, which was founded in 1985 and rejuvenated in 2004 by Harlem native Damon Dash, attracts up to 5000 people and is free of charge.

"Kingdome is one of the things that shaped me and molded me as a man because of its swagger," Dash told New York's Daily News. "I thought it would be something good, being that I'm from Harlem, that I can come back to Harlem and help the people out. That could be my little gift."

According to the Daily News, Sacramento Kings forward Ron Artest, Houston Rockets' guard Rafer Alston and New York Knicks forward David Lee are among the NBA stars expected to play. The tournament is sponsored by Dash's sneaker line Pro-Keds and will feature teams supported by Diddy's Bad Boy label, Jim Jones' Diplomats and DMX's Ruff Ryders.

"The atmosphere at the games is nuts," Lee explained. "You really get the feel that it's the coming together of the community in Harlem and the coming together of people who love basketball."

The "Kingdome Classic Tournament" will kick off on June 23rd and will last for ten weeks. The games will take place at courts on 115th St. and Lenox Ave.

  • Police Looking to Question Fat Joe In Double Homicide

Miami authorities are reportedly seeking to question Fat Joe who they believe witnessed the murder of two people in South Beach early Monday morning (May 28).

According to the Miami Herald, police claim that Fat Joe was in a rented black Cadillac Escalade with Lessli Paz and Joey Navarro which was parked outside of David's Cafe II just before 6 a.m.

A fight would then break out between the passengers in the vehicle and another man identified as Jermaine ''Wufgang'' Chamberline outside the Cuban eatery.

According to an arrest report released Tuesday, a fist fight took place before the actual shots were fired. "As the two groups began punching and kicking each other, [Chamberline] reached into his right-front pocket and pulled out a 9mm handgun."

Three slugs would hit Navarro, 26, of Homestead, Florida who later died at the hospital. Paz, 25, of New York, died on the sidewalk of one gunshot wound.

When police arrived, they detained four men who claimed at first they were friends of the dead men but later refused to cooperate.

Chamberline would be arrested minutes later and would eventually confess to shooting Paz and Navarro. He would be charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one of carrying a concealed weapon by a convicted felon.

Police are still unclear if Fat Joe (born Jose Cartagena) was directly involved in the fight and how he slipped away from the scene. They claim they only want to talk to him as a possible witness.

Aimee Morris, a spokeswoman for Fat Joe, said she had not talked to the rapper and could not immediately comment. His whereabouts were not known Tuesday.

  • Tyrese, Ginuwine, and Tank to release joint Album: Trio to call themselves TGT

Introducing LSG for a new generation. Just as Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill joined forces in 1997 to form a supergroup, so are current R&B crooners Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank.

TGT, as they are calling themselves, is currently working on a studio album, and plans to hold “American Idol”-style auditions to find a fourth member.

The trio is also set to hit the road this fall for The Shirts Off Tour, which is scheduled to touch down in such cities as New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, and Miami.

"With all the support our fans have given us individually over the years for our distinct signature styles, collectively we felt our fans deserved to hear great music in a way that they could never have imagined," Tyrese said, according to reports. "I've known these guys for years and they truly are like brothers, so it only felt right to come together as a trio to make history."

Calling the group "a dream come true," Ginuwine added: "Basically the world of R&B needed a change, and there were only a few chosen that could do it, R&B needed a pick up, R&B needed TGT."

A preview of TGT can be heard on the remix to Tank's current single "Please Don't Go."

  • Waitress Sues Jay-Z & 40/40 Club For Failure to Pay Wages

A former 40/40 waitress is sticking rapper Jay-Z and his club with a lawsuit claiming they were not paid legally required wages.

According to New York's Daily News, former 40/40 waitress Celeste Williams filed a proposed class-action lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court yesterday on behalf of herself and other workers, accusing co-owners of the 25th Street nightspot, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Juan Perez, of taking a cut of workers' tips, "willfully failing and refusing to pay them at the legally required minimum wage" and overtime.

"I find that this is a rampant violation throughout New York City," Williams' lawyer Maimon Kirschenbaum, was quoted by the New York Post.

Kirschenbaum said other club employees have been reluctant to file similar claims out of fear of retaliation, but Williams' lawsuit estimates that over 100 staffers have been shortchanged by the club.

In response, club management claims that Williams only worked at 40/40 for four days in December 2005, and club spokesman Ron Berkowitz has told the press that while 40/40 has yet to be served with papers, the allegations against the club are false.

"That certainly is not true," Berkowitz told the Daily News. "Everyone makes the minimum wage at the club, 100%."

Williams is seeking unspecified damages in her suit.

    Busta Rhymes Settles Lawsuit

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper Busta Rhymes settled a lawsuit with a handyman, Melvin Smith, who claims the rapper and his bodyguard roughed him up when he attempted to get an autograph in 2005. The New York Post reports that Rhymes reached the settlement on Monday (May 21st), just one day before he was scheduled to appear before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Emily Jane Goodman in an attempt to have the $100,000 judgment against him thrown out.

A $100,000 judgment against the rapper was entered when he failed to show up to court but, according to Rhymes, he was never served and was unaware that he needed to be in court.

According to an affidavit submitted by Rhymes, the process servers went to the home of his ex-girlfriend in Baldwin, Long Island. In the legal filing, the rapper wrote, "While I own the property, I have no access to it. I was required (by court order) to provide this home for the mother of my three children, from whom I am estranged and with whom I have been embroiled in child-custody proceedings for over two years."

Rhymes also alleged that he never met Smith but he still reached an undisclosed settlement. According to Smith, Rhymes and his bodyguard Troy Green assaulted him for no reason when he attempted to get an autograph at a sandwich shop near City Hall. Smith suffered a cut above his eye which required four stitches, and he was left with several black-and-blue marks after the incident.

  • Master P responds to 50 Cent's diss

    By: Janine Coveney

As has become his practice prior to the release of his solo albums, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson recently dissed one of his fellow rappers. At the press conference for this year's BET Award nominees last week, 50 Cent was asked his thoughts on Master P's decision to clean up his lyrics. 50 Cent said: "Well Master P doesn't sell CDs anymore. You can tell him I said it. Cameras is rolling right? Curtis June 26th."

Master P recently responded to 50 Cent's comments in an open letter that read in part, "Curtis Jackson's comment motivated me. There are a lot of immature people in the world. Oprah Winfrey is absolutely right, we need to grow up and be responsible for our own actions. I paid for Curtis'first rap tour through the South. He was such a humble guy at the time. Most artists'mission is to sell records. My mission is to help save and change lives."

The No Limit founder added, "There are four things that differentiate me from artists like Curtis Jackson. One, I can honestly admit that I was once part of the problem. Two, I don't want my son to grow up and be like me. I want him to be better and do better, and that is why he is taking the time to pursue a college degree. Three, money don't make me, I make money. My goal is to educate our people in building generational wealth and knowing how important it is to own real estate. Four, I'm a true entrepreneur; my boss is God not Jimmy Iovine. From one brother to another, if you misunderstand my purpose you could always pick up the phone or talk to me in person. I'm trying to be part of the solution not the problem."

Master P also took a shot at BET before sharing that he was hoping to full his friends together in effort to make rap more positive. He said, "I'm reaching out to my friends Shaquille O'Neal, Will Smith, Russell Simmons, Queen Latifah, Derek Anderson, Charles Barkley, Emmitt Smith, Beyonce, and Reverend Run to help contribute to this positive movement. I am not asking any other hip hop or gangsta rap artist change what they do; that's how they make their money. Furthermore, I am not a preacher; I'm just telling the world what I'm doing and the changes that I am making because it's something I want to do. If that's sending mixed signals to people then they need to deal with their own conscience first."

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony make it back to the top of the charts

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony completed their comeback last week when their latest album, Strength & Loyalty, entered the Billboard 200 albums chart at Number Two after selling 119,000 copies its first week in stores. The album was the group's first major label release in five years and their first without former member Bizzy Bone.

The group's Krayzie Bone explained what it was like creating the new album without Bizzy Bone. He said: "This time around, you know there was no drama making the album, this time around. You know what I'm sayin', like no drama whatsoever. We was all in the same place, at the same time, vibing, you know what I'm sayin'?"

The rapper added: "The whole vibe was like laid back so that's why everybody was able to concentrate, you know what I'm sayin'? So it was like this album was by far like one of the most stress free albums we done had."

The latest single from the set is "Lil Love" featuring Mariah Carey and Bow Wow. The song was produced by Jermaine Dupri.

  • Diddy accused of losing his cool

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Sean "Diddy" Combs is in hot water after his friend and Making The Band co-star Laurie Ann Gibson filed a criminal complaint against the mogul on May 11th. New York's Daily News reports that Gibson accused Combs of menacing her with a chair during an argument they had during the April 25th taping of the latest season of Making The Band.

According to Gibson, she, Combs, and Michael Bivins were involved in a heated debate about the lackluster dance performance of the contestants when the two men started cursing at her and Bivins allegedly grabbed her while Combs threatened her with a chair. She broke free but Bivins allegedly grabbed her again. Before Gibson left the set, Combs allegedly fired her and ordered MTV to cut off the cameras.

Combs has denied the allegations and stated that the shenanigans were part of the theatrics of the TV show. Combs'lawyer Benjamin Brafman said, "This is just another example of a false accusation by someone trying to take advantage of Sean's success and celebrity status."

Gibson's lawyer, Peter Toumbekis, said, "She is the inspiration for the contestants, and she has worked with Sean Combs for more than 10 years. That's why this was so unexpected."

The New York Police Department investigated the allegation, found no criminality and closed the case but they're still attempting to get the footage of the incident from MTV.

The latest season of Making The Band features Diddy, Michael Bivins, and others trying to put together an all male band. The network hasn't announced when the show will premiere.

She would also like to thank wonderful companies like Suzuki for their generosity towards the fund-raiser. Through the Lil Kim Cares Foundation, Kim will continue to raise funds and awareness for National programs that assist with issues of homelessness, HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, transitional living, child neglect and violence against women in the impoverished neighborhoods throughout the country."

The first part of Lil Kim's fundraising drive was an online auction which ended on May 3rd.

Method Man Arrested In New York On Marijuana Charges

The Wu-Tang’s own Method Man was arrested in New York on Thursday (May 17) when police discovered nearly 30 grams of marijuana in his possession during a traffic stop.

The rapper (real name: Clifford Smith) was reportedly stopped at around 10 p.m. near the toll booths on Hamilton Ave., as he attempted to enter the Battery Tunnel in Brooklyn.

Police spotted expired tags on Meth’s 2005 Lincoln Navigator, so they pulled him over. When the rapper rolled down his window, a cloud of marijuana smoke poured out of the vehicle, which prompted a thorough search of the vehicle.

“It was like something out of ‘Cheech and Chong.’ He rolls down the window and the smoke would choke a horse,” a source told the New York Daily News.

The arresting officer also said that he noticed two “blunts” and a plastic bag with more marijuana in plain view.

Method Man was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle under the influence and driving an uninspected motor vehicle.

He was booked and released Friday morning (May 18).

In other Method Man news, the rapper is currently in the lab working on a new album with his Wu-Tang brethren titled 8 Diagrams.

A woman says she was pushing her baby in a stroller Wednesday evening in Brooklyn when a silver Range Rover, driven by rapper Foxy Brown, came out of nowhere and nearly ran them down.

The woman, who says she was crossing at the intersection of Underhill Ave. and Prospect Place, told the New York Daily News: "I jumped back, pulling the stroller, and yelled at the driver, 'You should watch where you're going! She cursed at me and proceeded to drive down Prospect Place.

"I called the police, but they said that they couldn't do anything because she didn't actually hit me."

Brown, born Inga Marchand, is not even supposed to be behind a wheel. Her license is currently suspended after she failed to respond to repeated summonses, the paper reports.

MIMS Earns Virgin Mobile USA Award

'This is Why I'm Hot' is Virgin's 50 Millionth Ringtone Sold

Billboard Ringmasters No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 and iTunes No. 1 Top Track Has Sold Nearly 2 MILLION Ringtones

NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Capitol Records breakthrough artist MIMS has been honored by Virgin Mobile with a special award for having sold the 50-millionth ringtone purchased through Virgin Mobile.

The song that reached the milestone threshold was, of course, MIMS's unquenchable Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash "This is Why I'm Hot," which is itself RIAA platinum-certified for sales approaching 2 million ringtones, having topped the Billboard Ringmasters chart for nine consecutive weeks. The song has since then refused to cool off, maintaining the No. 2 spot for an additional four weeks, where it resides on the current Ringmasters chart.

MIMS's single has also taken the national No. 1 position in Canada and Japan. "This is Why I'm Hot" made the fourth-greatest advance to the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 position in chart history to date, by moving from No. 32 to No. 1 in its sixth week. It held at the chart summit for two consecutive weeks. "This is Why I'm Hot" remains top 20 on the Hot 100, months after its No. 1 peak in March.

MIMS's Capitol Records debut, MUSIC IS MY SAVIOR, released March 27, 2007, debuted on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at No. 2, and on the Billboard national Top 200 album sales chart at No. 4.

Washington Heights, New York-born MIMS began DJ-ing in his early teens, and at age 20, appeared in Baby Blue Soundcrew's Much Music Awards Best Video nominee "Love Em All." Last year, his independent release of "This is Why I'm Hot" attracted local New York radio play, and a Capitol Records deal.

  • Young Jeezy plans to make a fan's dream come true

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Young Jeezy recently released the third single, "Dreamin'" featuring Keyshia Cole, from his platinum sophomore album, The Inspiration. The rapper has decided to launch the Make Your Dreams Come True contest in conjunction with the new single. He's asking fans to submit their dreams directly to him at his website, youngjeezy.com by June 21st. On July 23rd, he will announce the winner and fulfill that person's dream.

Jeezy said in a released statement, "Sometimes I look at my life and I'm amazed at how far I've come. If it wasn't for certain people supporting me, I don't think I'd be able to accomplish what I have...that's why I'm doing this for my fans. They're the ones who helped to make Young Jeezy number one and it's important that I give back to them. I wanted to do more than just say 'thank you,'I wanted to show them how thankful I am that they're helping me realize my dreams. For me, this whole contest, and even my career will make me feel like I've accomplished a lot if I can help someone else realize their dreams too."

In addition to the contest, Young Jeezy recently launched his Eighty Seven Thirty Two (8732) clothing line through Rocawear. The rapper will also release the debut album from his group, USDA, on May 22nd. The album, Young Jeezy Presents USDA: Cold Summer "The Authorized Mixtape," will feature Jeezy and his two proteges Blood Raw and Slick Pulla.

The rapper explained that he attempted to break the new group while touring. He said: "It's the best way to go city to city and get everybody out there to really like your music, you know what I mean, and deal with the type of movement you got going on. So you know to me it's just a plus. You know I like to be on the road anyway so it's just a grind, you know?"

  • 50 Cent Says He Won't Clean Up Lyrics, Disses Master P

50 Cent recently revealed that he has no intentions of cleaning up his lyrics despite all the backlash that hip-hop has received since Don Imus' "nappy headed hoes" controversy.

When the G-Unit boss was asked if he would voluntarily remove offensive lyrics from his music during a BET press conference for its upcoming awards yesterday (May 16), he replied: "are you familiar with politics? Are you familiar with the President's No. 2 man? You're familiar with him resigning based on him using, maybe what we'd call a dating service? Maybe he's hanging out with hoes that we mention in the music. If that doesn't make you aware of a situation that exists...."

"Music is a mirror, and hip-hop is a reflection of the environment that we grew up in. It's the harsh realities that end up in the music," he added. "If I ask you to paint a picture of the American flag and not use the color red, you're gonna have a difficult time. To capture what we try to capture in the art form, I'm sure some conservative Americans can't [identify] with it because of their lifestyle and the way they've actually been brought up, and they haven't been exposed to those realities."

50 would take a stab at Master P when a reporter used the No Limit Records founder as an example of a rapper who has chosen to stop using racist and sexist language in their music.

"Well Master P doesn't sell CDs anymore," he scoffed. "You can tell him I said it. Cameras is rollin' right?...Curtis, June 26."

In related news, the videos for 50's current singles off Curtis, "Straight To The Bank" and "Amusement Park," will premiere on BET's "106th and Park" today (May 17). After their debut, fans can vote which of the two songs they'd like to see the rapper perform at the 2007 BET Awards which will take place on the same day Curtis is released.

The aforementioned videos have already leaked onto the internet .

The nominations were announced Wednesday (May 16) by rappers T.I. and 50 Cent, R&B newcomer Robin Thicke and "Everybody Loves Chris" cast member Tichina Arnold during a press conference at Hollywood's Renaissance Hotel. This year's ceremony will be televised live June 26 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Propelled by the success of her second album, "B-Day," and the award-winning film "Dreamgirls," Beyonce is up for best female R&B artist, best collaboration (with Jay-Z on both "Deja Vu" and "Upgrade U"), video of the year (for "Irrreplaceable" and her duet with Shakira on "Beautiful Liar") and the viewer's choice award.

MTV launching Rapping With The Stars...

    By: Barbara Sharnak

MTV is hoping to score the next celebrity-reality show hit by launching Rapping With the Stars. A development deal is in the works for the show, which would pair celebrities with hip-hop artists to compete in rap-related challenges.

Guiliana DePandi from E! and Paul Miller from RickMill Productions are being considered as members of the 'hip hop panel' that will judge the weekly competition.

ABC scored a mega hit with the format on Dancing With The Stars, but Fox failed last year when it attempted Singing With The Celebrities.

  • Kanye West says Lil Wayne sessions are going well

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Super producer Kanye West has been busy completing his new album, Graduation, but the rapper has made time to get in the studio with Lil Wayne. The two artists share the same management team. West is excited about what they've created so far. He told MTV.com, "I'm making beats. The dude is the hottest rapper. We already made some songs that are incredible. I'm not going to tell you who's on them, but I can talk my s**t, 'cause we already got a couple of bangers under the belt. Hopefully I can deliver some product with him to push it to MTV even more, where hopefully he'll be opening up some award shows and getting his rightful spot. Right now he's ripping down every mixtape, going crazy with it. It's unabashed, raw lyrics. I think it's the realest form of hip-hop right now."

West added that he had to do some research before heading into the studio with Lil Wayne. He said, "I went back and listened to this Juvenile album 400 Degreez, and (Wayne) was snappin'. Lyrically not letting up. I liked his intonation, his patterns, his punch lines, his whole story. That's what got me interested. It's music. It's product before publicity. I need to get off the mic right now and go to the studio."

No release date has been set for Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III. West's Graduation is due out in September.

Styles P and Street Radio Team up for Ghost Sessions

Street Radio, J. Math and Jimi Kendrix, A&Red and
produced 6 tracks for Styles P’s new album Ghost
Sessions, to be released on May 22. The first of two
albums this year, Styles revisited some mixtape verses
and recorded new material as well. Street Radio had a
vision for the music & arrangements and worked with SP
to create a classic street album.
    J. Math says, “It was crazy to be able to sit with
Styles and see what direction he’s trying to go. He
had a lot of deep verses that were never really
released. Some were just ideas, but we were able to
turn them into songs with full soundscapes. We focused
on sculpting the sound to be as impactful as the
    lyrics.”
Street Radio produced songs like “Poor Folk”, which
features Joell Ortiz and was also released on his
recent debut album The Brick: Bodega Stories. “Fuck
The Police” is a contemplative track about the
realities of injustice and the jail system, while “No
Remorse” teams SP with J-Hood for one of the darkest
    songs on the album.
Ghost Sessions also features Kool G. Rap, AZ,
Cormega, and Jimi Kendrix himself. Jimi says,” We’ve
been writing a lot of hooks with our tracks. We like
to present songs with some kind of direction, not just
a beat. We always got some crazy themes and sound
effects; it only made sense to start jumping in the
booth too. Some may be surprised to see I did the hook
on “Pain”, but you gonna start seeing a lot more of
    that from us.”
Street Radio is currently working with AZ on his
forthcoming album to be released in August. After
hearing some beats, AZ immediately recruited them to
handle 90% of the production. AZ says, “Working with
these dudes is like working with Dr. Dre. They come
with the whole picture and it all has their own feel
    to it.”
The production team recently produced one of the
highlight tracks, “9mm”, on Bone Thugs N Harmony’s new
album Strength & Loyalty. Papoose also tapped into the
Street Radio sound for the songs “Wheel Of Fortune”
and “Victory 2007” off his debut album Nacirema’s
Dream. And with five tracks on this summer’s new 2Pac
album, Street Radio continue to spread their
    distinguished sound throughout the game.
But through it all, the duo keeps their roots with
the community. Jimi maintains an active life in the
church, while Math continues to work with at-risk
teens at the A.E.E.P. youth center in Brooklyn. You
can often find them hanging out at the center or
running their annual Rap, Poetry, & Word class, which
    is in its fifth year.

  • Kanye West sets September release date for "Graduation"

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper Kanye West is ready for graduation. The rapper will release his third album, Graduation, on September 18th. The rapper's mother and manager, Donda West, told MTV.com, "This Graduation album is his best ever -- musically, as well as the lyrics."

West and music director Hype Williams have already shot two videos for the project. West explained, "Me and Hype went out, we shot nine days. We were out in Japan, we were out in the desert. We're taking it serious."

As for the overall concept of the new album, West said, "I'm graduating from a school called 'Universe City.'I think the sound is bigger this time. It's bigger and simpler, where the notes really connect with you and I say lines ... I know the power of my words, so when I rap, I know it's gonna impact the world."

The rapper added, "I'm ready to take over the world once again. I have a lot to say. I got a lot more music to make. I'm still going through stuff. People are still going through stuff. I make music people can relate to every day. My music just isn't about my story. ... There's not one artist in the world that has as much responsibility as me. When I deliver a piece of music, it has to connect with the most genres of music. I don't care who you name. If you name rap artists, their only responsibility is to rap crowds. If you name a pop artist, their only responsibility is to a pop crowd. If you name some French dance music, their responsibility is to the cool crowd. But I have to deliver songs. All these people are looking at me from super-middle America to the hipsters like, 'What's he gonna do next?'"

West has also been busy working on new albums by Common and Lil Wayne.

In related news, Donda West recently released her new book, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar. Donda West explained, "I was encouraged by a number of my friends and colleagues. I taught English for a number of years, so it's not surprising that I would consider writing a book, but I never knew I would be writing a book about myself. There are so many aspects of Kanye's life now and growing up that people wouldn't know about. They know about Kanye the superstar. I wanted to share who he is as a person."

Rapper The Game, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, is free after posting $50,000 bail early Saturday morning, May 12th. Ghostface Killah opens up.....says he's lonely

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

The Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah recently opened up during an interview with a Denmark radio station. The rapper admitted to having financial issues and to being lonely. He said, "I'm still struggling. Don't get me wrong, I'm not rich. Just because you see me with jewelry on and whatever, don't pay the jewelry no mind."

The rapper added, "When I go home, when I leave the tour, that's how I am, I just feel lonely inside. I'm just a lonely old man and people don't know that."

Ghostface has decided to take a new approach to his music. He said, "On my next album, which might be a double album, I'mma stop cursing 'cause I don't think God wants me to curse too much on my records. So I'mma start singing for God, not singing but rapping, singing good stuff for the women, the children and for us. I don't care what people think no more because I've sung a lot of that 'my gun this and my gun that' 'cause I been there. I'mma do something totally different on the next album."

The rapper also shared an incident which may have prompted him to change his ways. He was involved in a shootout while on his way to the studio with The Delfonics. The rapper explained, "I had trouble with these guys from around the way. So I'm going to the studio with The Delfonics and they are behind me in a van while I'm in another car in front of them. So these guys are on the expressway following us and when we got to the light they got in front of me. So I'm thinking 'its about to be on.'I had a gun on me and they were just looking at me on the rearview mirror."

The rapper continued, "So my back is against the wall, 'cause these are shooters, I'm thinking if they get out the car they might just shoot me. I'm in the passenger seat, just sitting there and they are there for five minutes. The Delfonics are behind me, they don't know what's going on. So as soon as they made the turn, I was so heated and mad I just started shooting at them. That's when I was coming out the bad stage but I was still bad. So we left, the guys turned back around and started chasing us and started shooting at our car and the van. I felt bad that it had to be like that because I love The Delfonics and I told them I was sorry and one of them was like 'don't even worry about it, I should have brought my knife."

  • Is 50 Cent Dating Victoria Rowell?

Based on his fling with Vivica A. Fox, we already know 50 Cent has a thing for older women. Has the 31-year-old rapper turned his attention toward yet another 40-something actress?

In Touch Weekly claims the G-Unit general is dating Victoria Rowell, who met the artist on the set of their recent military drama, “Home of the Brave.” Apparently, sparks flew and the two have been a couple ever since.

"Victoria loves the edge that 50 Cent has," a friend of the actress tells In Touch.

Rowell, who has an 11-year-old son by ex-boyfriend Wynton Marsalis, is best known for her former role as Drucilla Barber Winters on the CBS soap “The Young and the Restless.” The character was recently killed off (or was she?) by falling over a cliff and into a river. The body was never found.

Rowell had asked “Restless” producers to release her early from her contract. The actress received good reviews as Samuel Jackson’s wife in “Home of the Brave,” and is perhaps looking to focus more of her time on feature films.

She is also devoting lots of energy to the promotion of her new memoir, “The Women Who Raised Me.”

  • Island Def Jam begins layoffs

    By Richard Driver

In addition to the losses incurred by Warner Music Group Corp. (NYSE: WMG) during the first quarter of 2007, the Island Def Jam Music Group has been carrying out layoffs this week according to Billboard.com. The Billboard article states that some of the officials are national directing staff, while others are members of internal creative and production departments. The biggest layoff though is the "Roc La Familia" staff, responsible for the international promotions of the company, according to the report. Island Def Jam is a member of the Universal Music Group, a subsidiary of the French Vivendi corporation (Euronext:VIV).

Though the rumored loss of 40 individuals is nowhere near the 400 lost by Warner, the fact that a second situation is developing so soon seems ominous for the record industry. It's also a notable move so soon after the re-establishment of historic Mercury Records as a new division within the group (that occurred on April 25). Mercury Records had existed prior to 1998, when it was absorbed by Island Records as a result of Polygram (it's former owner) became a part of Universal.

Both of these cases, with Warner as well, could be signs that either a major shift is on the horizon, or that music sales are slipping entirely. Unfortunately, the good news that accompanied Warner is not being repeated for Island Def Jam and the digital promotion departments are not being beefed up, at least not in these early rumors.

  • Diplomats deny rift between Cam'ron and Jim Jones

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Late last week a story broke that Diplomats'co-CEO and rapper Jim Jones was on the outs with his former best friend and Diplomats founder Cam'ron. Jones was scheduled to appear on New York's WQHT-FM on Monday (May 7th) to discuss the beef but he was a no show.

Several members of the Diplomats including vice-president of A&R Duke Da God, Freekey Zeekey, and 40 Cal addressed the situation on Tuesday (May 8th) while conducting an interview for satellite radio. When asked about the beef between the two Diplomat leaders, they quickly dismissed the reports. They also told the audience "don't believe the hype, don't believe everything you hear," and "believe none of what you hear, half of what you see."

The Diplomats are currently promoting a new compilation, More Than Music Vol. 2 which features appearances by Katt Williams, Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, Hell Rell, JR Rider, 40 Cal, and Jim Jones.

  • Jadakiss called "The Worst Of The Worst" by community leader

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper Jadakiss and other members of D-Block were scheduled to participate in a celebrity basketball game and fundraiser at the Yerwood Center in Connecticut on May 19th but the event was cancelled when community members became aware of the rapper's background.

The Stamford Advocate reports that Jere Eaton, a former board member of the center and a potential presidential candidate for the NAACP's Stamford branch, sent emails and links that showed Jadakiss in a negative light.

Eaton told the paper, "All of these artists are the worst of the worst. They're criminals. Their favorite word is the N-word, and they demean women by calling them bitches and hos."

Reverend Tommie Jackson added, "You can't have double standards for lyrics that impact your community negatively. The bottom line is we believe that the Yerwood Center needs to raise money but there are better ways of doing it than bringing in Jadakiss."

Deborah Sewell, the Yerwood Center's president and chief executive officer, has had a relationship with D-Block for several years and they helped facilitate a gang truce between two factions in the area. Sewell said, "I'm disappointed, because I really felt this would have been a great opportunity for the community to band together and show up in force. They've always been supportive of the community and they love to play basketball."

50 Cent makes cameo in 'Live'

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper 50 Cent almost didn't make the cut of film director Bill Guttentag's latest project, Live!. The film, which premiered last month at the Tribeca Film Festival, chronicles the life of a television executive who is trying to produce a reality show in which contestants play Russian roulette.

Guttentag, who initially edited the rapper's brief cameo out of the movie, told New York's Daily News, "I didn't know who he was. But my daughter saw the clip and she said, 'Dad, you have to use that! It's 50 Cent!"

In related news, 50 Cent is currently working on three film projects for next year including: The Dance, Live Bet, and Ski Mask Way.

The rapper will release his new album, Curtis, on June 26th. The first single from the album is "Straight to the Bank" featuring Tony Yayo.

  • Rapper Busta Rhymes rejects plea deal in New York

Grammy-nominated rapper Busta Rhymes turned down a plea deal on Tuesday that would have sent him to jail for one year, the Manhattan district attorney's office said.

Rhymes has been arrested four times in 10 months, most recently on May 3 on suspicion of drunken driving. He also faces two charges for assault and one for driving with a suspended license.

In exchange for pleading guilty, Rhymes would have served one year for the assault charges, been fined $1,500 and forced to participate in an anti-drunken driving program, said Edison Alban, a spokesman for the DA's office.

The next court date was set for July 10, the DA's office said.

Rhymes, 34, whose real name is Trevor Smith, was pulled over shortly after midnight on May 3 in midtown Manhattan while driving a 2006 GMC Yukon Denali, which police described as having "excessively tinted windows."

A police spokeswoman said Rhymes had a "strong odor of alcohol on his breath."

In February, the rapper was arrested for driving with a suspended license and in 2006 he was arrested in January and August on separate assault charges.

Rhymes' lawyer, Scott Leemon, was not immediately available for comment.

Leemon has been quoted in press reports as calling Rhymes' arrests "payback" for refusing to cooperate in the investigation into the fatal 2006 shooting of Rhymes' former bodyguard, Israel Ramirez. The case remains unsolved.

Rhymes was a founding member of the influential Leaders of the New School in the early 1990s and as a solo artist has recorded hits such as "Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check" and "Dangerous."

    Trouble within the Dipset Camp?

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

There has been building speculation for months that there was dissention within the Diplomats camp but now Diplomats co-CEO Jim Jones has gone on record with his beefs with Diplomats founder Cam'ron. Jones allegedly will be conducting interviews in the coming days to provide more clarity on the issue but he told gossip columnist Miss Info of WQHT-FM in New York that he and Juelz Santana were "putting Cam'ron on punishment."

The latest dust-up in the Diplomats camp was fueled by the negative publicity generated by Cam'ron's 60 Minute interview where he said he wouldn't alert authorities if a serial killer lived next door to him. Cam'ron was also allegedly involved in a confrontation with rapper Tru Life in front of New York's Club Stereo.

Jones said, "Me and Cam'ron haven't spoken to each other in a year.... I kept quiet out of loyalty, I felt like if we can't be friends then at least we can do business together....But now I can't be next to you....I'm through wit being in hot water because of you....We still the Diplomats. We worked too hard to achieve our own success and now we're gonna do something new...."

According to a source, Jones anti-Cam'ron sentiment isn't shared by Santana and several other members of the Diplomats.

  • Diddy Makes Television History

It's Diddy TV: Sean "Diddy" Combs has already dominated the worlds of fashion and music. Now, he is making history as one of the most prolific and popular African American television producers to date. With an astounding four shows running simultaneously and several more in development, he is well on his way to achieving this goal.

"When I do something, it's got to be the biggest and the best. I'm really proud to be one of TV's leading producers right now and am working hard toward achieving a television legacy like Aaron Spelling," says Combs.

As the executive producer of the hit MTV show Taquita & Kaui, airing Mondays at 10:30PM ET/PT on MTV, Diddy documents the lives of two girls who met on his series Making the Band 3. Although they didn't make the final cut, the deep friendship they formed and shared passion to make it big in the entertainment business has brought them to Las Vegas to take another shot at showbiz, resulting in unexpected and hilarious situations.

Leading into Taquita & Kaui is Run's House, another Diddy-produced hit MTV show. Now in its third season, the show offers a glimpse into the lives of hip-hop royalty Reverend Run and his family. Traditional family values are spun around by a most untraditional man, providing a constant dose of both laughter and heartache. The series airs at 10PM ET/PT on MTV.

Coming up on MTV in June, Diddy is back with Making the Band 4. Last year, Making the Band 3 proved to be a monster hit as it formed the group Danity Kane, whose self-titled album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and generated a string of hit singles. This season, Diddy has set out to find and form the next male superstar group. After screening thousands of performers, Diddy has selected finalists he feels could be the next dancing and singing sensation.

Adding comedy producer to his list of credits, Diddy has teamed up with HBO for P. Diddy Presents: The Bad Boys of Comedy, now in its second season. The show features what Diddy describes as the "edgiest, youngest, freshest comics in America." Besides creating and executive producing the show, Diddy appears in each episode introducing and reacting to each performer. The show can be seen Fridays at midnight on HBO.

Declared as one of "The 100 Most Influential People in the World" by Time Magazine, Sean "Diddy" Combs oversees one of the world's most dominant urban entertainment companies, encompassing businesses such as recording, music publishing, producer management, television and film production, apparel and cosmetics. He has been seen in such films as Made, Monster's Ball, and Carlito's Way: Rise to Power. In addition, Diddy starred on Broadway in the Tony Award winning show A Raisin In The Sun, which will debut as a made-for-television film on ABC this fall. Diddy not only stars in the film, but also serves as executive producer. Currently his critically acclaimed album Press Play is available in stores, featuring the single "Last Night (feat. Keyshia Cole)" which is a recent top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

  • R.Kelly's Wife Speaks About Him To Essence Magazine

Andrea Kelly saunters into the room with her stiletto boots clicking, her shoulder-length curls bouncing; she’s sparkling like the crystal hoops dangling from her ears. Despite her famous last name, few in the room know who she is. She’s used to that. Andrea has been ignored before, like in those posh stores near Chicago’s Gold Coast or in Los Angeles, where burly bouncers blocked her from crossing the velvet ropes—that is, until the gatekeeper found out who she was. Then it was “Oops.” Disbelief turned to immediate accommodation. And then came the apologies, “Sorry, Mrs. Kelly.” But mostly it’s, “I didn’t know he had a wife."

“He” is her husband, R. Kelly. Yes, the R. Kelly—the Grammy Award–winning R&B singer currently facing 14 counts of child pornography charges for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl. Andrea, or Baby Girl, as she is called by those in the dance world, has shunned her husband’s larger-than-life spotlight. She says her priorities during her 11-year marriage have been shielding her three young children—two girls, 9 and 7, and a 5-year-old boy—from the fray and finding serenity even amid overwhelming controversy. Despite the rumors and allegations about her husband’s encounters with young girls, she refuses to play the role of the poor, downtrodden wife: “Some people in my position would probably be very broken right now, and they would probably be saying ‘woe is me.’ But I’m just not that person.”

    RISING ABOVE THE PAIN
Andrea is in the midst of rehearsals for a showcase she is choreographing. In one piece she’ll dance to Mahalia Jackson’s solemn song from the movie Imitation of Life; the dancers pick her up, perhaps signifying that she is rising above her problems and transferring the pain. The interpretation is also a metaphor for her life.

When the videotape that shows a man resembling R. Kelly appearing to have sex with a young girl and urinating on her surfaced in 2002, the scandal rocked the music world and briefly cast Kelly as the villain. His former protégée Stephanie “Sparkle” Edwards publicly identified the girl in the tape as her 14-year-old niece. (The girl, however, continues to deny she was in the tape.) It became a gritty bootleg video watched and downloaded in homes across the country. The gossip was viral. In June of that year, Kelly was arrested and indicted on multiple counts of child pornography in connection with the tape. Kelly, who maintains it’s someone else in the video, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and is awaiting a trial, which has been postponed several times.

Andrea was pregnant with their son when the news broke. Instead of breaking down, she blocked everything out. She said the couple worked hard to protect the family from the outside world, and the accusations forced her to become “a lioness” for her children and to live by adages she knows sound cliché but resonate nonetheless. While she smiles, she’s cautious and each answer seems carefully constructed. “What doesn’t break you makes you stronger, and I’m living proof,” she reflects. “After I went through that storm, look at me. I can still wake up and smile every day, and I’m still going on with my company and I’m living my life.”

Andrea does, however, shift uncomfortably when talking about the case against her husband; it’s a subject she’d rather leave alone. She does not allow her children to read the tabloids and will only permit them to be in the company of people she trusts. She keeps life for them as normal as possible: playdates with neighbors, parties and trips. But Andrea says she had to cut some people off who said nasty things about her husband, and surround herself with people who she believes care for her. “I know the allegations against my husband don’t reflect on me as an individual,” she says. “They don’t reflect on me as a mom or as a wife, and they don’t reflect on me in my everyday life.”

She allows that some news articles as well as court records are true. The couple did file for divorce in 2006. Andrea moved out of their home, and both hired top-notch attorneys. According to reports, she also filed an order of protection in September 2005, explaining to a judge that when she had told her husband she wanted a divorce, he became angry and hit her. She rescinded the protection order weeks later.

Attorneys for both announced the couple were trying to work out their problems. Still, it’s clear that Andrea’s pain is far from dormant. She will not comment on this situation, saying, “It’s old news.” She knows many think she filed for divorce because of the child pornography allegations. Wrong, she insists: “When there is a storm, I won’t leave you out in the rain. I’m no fair-weather wife.’’ Andrea says she also knows others will swear she filed for divorce because of the comments she made to the judge. Not true, she adds, claiming they just grew up and apart, as couples sometimes do.

Andrea says she also had to look within. “I have to take responsibility for myself,’’ she says. “I don’t want to sit here and act as if I have some halo over my head. A person has to ask, ‘How much did I allow?’ But I’ll tell you, whatever happens to us, I will love that man to the day I die.” And while she admits they are living separately, she says she and Robert are trying to work things out. But she acknowledges that together forever may not be their fate. “Do I know if we are going to be married in the next six months?’’ she says. “Who knows? But what I can say is that we filed this nearly three years ago, and we are still married.”

There are happy memories of laughter and beach vacations, of the singer taking the ingenue to Europe for the first time, and the couple building a life together with their children. She knows her husband’s favorite foods and the different sides of a man who isn’t the king of bump and grind at home, just Daddy. “We are doing all the same things the Joneses are doing, but unfortunately, our last name is Kelly,” Andrea says of their efforts to reconcile. When asked if she still loves her husband, she replies, “Very much.”

    IN THE BEGINNING
Thirteen years ago, a friend called a then 20-year-old Andrea Lee and urged her to try out as a dancer for R. Kelly’s upcoming tour. She rolled her eyes, remembering the time she was rejected from one of his previous video auditions. But her friend insisted, and Andrea acquiesced. She got the gig to join the 12 Play tour.

Andrea immediately scoped the bland choreography—imagine a milquetoast Vegas theme and outdated dances like the Running Man—and raised her hand. “Uh-uh, I’m not doing that,” she recalls saying. Kelly, who calls her Drea and sometimes Baby Girl, challenged her to choreograph instead. When he returned from playing basketball, he saw that Andrea had arranged three dances. Since then she’s choreographed and danced for the Best of Both Worlds, Key in the Ignition and TP2.com tours; the BMI Urban, BET and Billboard awards shows; and music videos for “Happy People,” “Thoia Thoing” and “You Remind Me of Something.”

Around this time, in the summer of 1994, 27-year-old Kelly secretly married 15-year-old R&B singer Aaliyah, but the marriage was eventually annulled. Meanwhile, Andrea’s own relationship with Kelly blossomed during those long hours on the road. “It’s a love story,’’ she says. He dazzled her with his humor, telling her yo’ mama jokes and doing impressions. “He’s silly, and I am just a silly person. He’s a jokester,’’ she says.“We started out just as friends—artist and choreographer. You are traveling on the bus. The more you are together, the more you learn.”

The two were married in 1996 in a small, nontraditional ceremony in Colorado. Two homes, many backyard barbecues and three children followed. In better days they smile into cameras like young lovers. In one photograph they’re laughing and teasing each other as they cook in the backyard. But as the couple settled into domesticity, controversy dogged their heels.

Six months ago, Andrea says, she never would have imagined talking to Essence, or any publication, for that matter. Careful not to say anything to hurt her estranged husband or family, she had always refused requests for interviews. “I have two daughters and a son. They may say, ‘Mom and Dad went through a storm.’ But it’s not the storm I want them to remember, it’s how their mom came out of it.”

There have been so many lies, so many rumors and half-truths, she notes. One article claimed her family members were afraid for her because they couldn’t get in touch with her. Untrue, Andrea says, exasperation peppering her voice. “We live right here in Chicago,” she says. “How could you not know where I am? It’s not as if I am overseas.”

In fact, the only time she really broke down was when a recent magazine article stated she had turned on her husband. A straight- up lie, she claims in response. “How could someone write something like that? I have children,’’ she says, inconsolable. “They are going to grow up someday and read this. I would never do anything to hurt their father. We have a bond that we will have for the rest of our lives because we have children.’’

As she sits down to talk one spring afternoon, there are myths she yearns to dispel, starting with what it’s like to be the spouse of a workaholic celebrity. It’s not a life of nannies and mimosas. “I was there as Robert was evolving,” she says, “but most people don’t realize that as a celebrity’s wife, you make a lot of sacrifices. You have to understand there are birthday parties he’s missing; there are recitals that you have to go to by yourself.”

She knows that her dancing has gone unnoticed and that occasionally others have hijacked her work. After she choreographed a Matrix-like move in a music video four years ago, Andrea couldn’t turn on BET without seeing the step. “I actually taught my dancers to do it in half time. So they’re doing it in slow motion. Later, I turn on BET, Ciara’s doing it in her video. I was like, ‘There’s that bitch,’ ’’ she recalls joking to her assistant.

But she’s sick of not receiving the proper recognition. “There’s so much more to me,” Andrea notes, “but to deal with people every day who just look at you like, well, isn’t that cute, R. Kelly’s wife. It’s like, boy, oh boy, if you only knew, you’d be a little more quick to hold your tongue, if you knew what it took to be in that position,” she says, now wiping away tears.“I would hope people would take away from this that you can’t just look at a woman in my position and judge her because of things that you perceive in a video or stuff you hear on the street.”

    SEX, LIES AND THAT VIDEO
    R. Kelly is a darling in the Windy City, an inventive songwriter and one of the most successful R&B performers of all time, composing and arranging for superstars like Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. Despite the child pornography charges, he continues to masterfully craft remixes and has released two multiplatinum solo albums since the indictments.

A multi–Grammy Award winner with six multiplatinum albums, he rules the radio airwaves as if he were an R&B autocrat. His “Step in the Name of Love” songs endear him to Chicagoans for putting their “steppin’ ” music on the national radar. But Kelly’s travails have been soapier than his “ghetto opera” song series, “Trapped in the Closet.”

With the trial recently postponed again, and despite his mounting legal problems, he remains as successful as ever, with a new album that dropped in late May. Ironically, while Kelly drips sex and scandal, his wife is simultaneously trying to school little Black girls. Follow your dream, she tells them, but remember, beautiful doesn’t mean naked. Andrea, who volunteers at a Chicago public high school as a dance instructor, warns girls who dream of being in videos to beware of the web of perilous men: “If you’re coming to a video, and you know that you’re there to dance and someone’s like, ‘Yo, when this video shoot is over, why don’t you come holler at my boy? He’s at the hotel.’ But there’s no cameraman at the hotel. So that’s when you compromise—the first time you say ‘Okay.’ You allowed him to disrespect you, so don’t get upset then when you get to the hotel and things go left on you.”

Through the years, she has ruminated over these issues and over music videos, even ones she’s in, seeing the images as contributing to the objectification of Black women. Back in 1994 Andrea thought the R. Kelly video “Summer Bunnies,” in which she performed, was cutting-edge. Today she says you couldn’t pay her enough to do those same moves again, to wear those booty shorts and swimsuits. But she was in her early twenties back then and wasn’t thinking about her responsibility to those who came after her. Now she does. Last year Andrea founded Dream Tu Dance Productions. Her goal is to open a dance academy on Chicago’s South Side. She wants a place for Black girls to learn the styles of dance luminaries like Alvin Ailey, Bob Fosse and Martha Graham. “I’ve become more and more conscious,” she says. “In this business, I know you’re going to have to make compromises, but when you start to compromise yourself, you’re getting so far away from your dream that you’re going to look up one day and find you’re not doing what you started out to do. You’ll be like, Who is this person in the mirror?”

    A LIFE APART
Andrea will not serve as a choreographer on projects for R.Kelly’s new album, due out this month. The Kellys live in separate residences: She stays in the burbs with the children, while he lives elsewhere. These days she’s focused on her own business, bridging the world of ballerinas and hip-hop dancers. She’s also working on a Soul Kittens Cabaret project with Nicci Gilbert of Brownstone and has auditioned for dance parts in The Color Purple even as she yearns to perform in Chicago. Her dream, she says, is to work with Tyler Perry on a musical and to dance in the performances of neosoul artists such as Erykah Badu, Common and Raheem DeVaughn.

On another spring afternoon, Andrea sips coffee at one of her favorite bars near Chicago’s downtown. She’s held it together through the years, through all the jokes, the talk, the women lusting after her husband. She’s even overheard banter about him while at the hair salon, from women clueless about her Presence. “Oooh, that R. Kelly is fine. I’d have all his babies,” they croon.

“That celebrity life all these people are trying to go after? There’s heartaches, there’s pain, good days and bad days,” Andrea says. “I know what I can carry and what I can’t. And if it gets too heavy I’m going to give it to God.’’

She wants people to know that being Mrs. R. Kelly does not define who she is. Her voice sharpens when she explains the importance of a strong identity. “I was a dancer before I met Robert, and I’ll be a dancer long after,” she insists. “If he were to die tomorrow, what am I? Who am I? Can I take care of myself? Would I be all right? Yes, I would. Just because I was on his stage, that did not make me a dancer; it did not make me a choreographer; it just presented me to the world. I was all those things before him.” That doesn’t mean she isn’t loyal to her spouse. When asked, “Do you believe the allegations about your husband?” she responds without hesitation that she absolutely does not, suggesting it’s all a lie and that her husband is not the man on the tape. “C’mon. Who would believe all that? That’s why they call them allegations,” she says.

But did she see the tape?

“Why would you ask that question of a woman married with children?” she says. “It’s ludicrous to ask me a question like that. Really, would you want someone to ask you that? And if they did ask you, would you see the tape?” All that to say, no, she hasn’t seen the tape and never looked for it. And for all those people who sought out the tape, she says, check your morals.

Still, despite her vocal support of her husband, Andrea says she won’t be accompanying him to his court appearances. All the media, all the mess. Besides, she’s got to be with the children. “I will take care of the home front,’’ she says and, with perfect comedic timing, adds, “There is a war going on, and they don’t send every soldier in America to Iraq. I’ve got to be homeland defense.”

While she may not see her husband every day, they talk daily, usually about the children. He’s taken them on tour while she was on a dancing gig. “That we filed for divorce is not that important,” she insists, “but it’s how we are dealing with each other. It’s very positive.”

For those who wonder how she could still love and laugh with the man at the center of such sordid accusations, well, she has an answer. “You cannot judge me by your standards,” she says. “You go into life with that mind-set of knowing it’s going to be hard, there are going to be bad days, people are going to say things that are going to hurt you. That’s always going to be true. But I just have to stand firm in who I am and let you know that you may throw darts at me, but you’re not going to break me.”

  • Verizon Dumps Akon Over 'Simulated Rape' with 15 Year-Old

Verizon has ended its partnership with hip-hop star Akon after he simulated the rape of a 15-year-old girl on stage at a show in Trinidad, FOX News has confirmed.

The girl thought she had won a dance contest, but instead got a simulated rape, which was caught on video.

"This week the partnership ended," Verizon said in a statement sent to FOX News. "We have music services on our cellphone service and we were promoting him as one of the artists. The other part of the sponsorship was the Gwen Stefani tour, of which he was an opening act. We are no longer sponsoring the tour."

Patrick Manning, the prime minister of Trinidad, called for a formal investigation of the explicit April 12 performance at Trinidad's Club Zen, which has since been closed by authorities, according to WorldNet Daily.

  • USHER’S FIANCEE LOOKING TO REPLACE HIS ‘MOM-AGER?’: Tameka Foster reportedly behind push to ease mom out

New York Daily News columnists Rush & Malloy are stirring up drama in the Ur’sher camp with reports that his mother/manager Jonetta Patton may fired and replaced by her nemesis and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Tameka Foster.

"They definitely don't get along," a source told the paper. "Tameka came to Jonetta's birthday on April 6. They hugged and posed for photos, but it was all for the cameras."

According to the report, their beef dates back to the moment she encouraged Usher to fire Foster as his stylist.

"Tameka went on the radio and took some shots at Jonetta," a source said, adding that Usher, 28, still likes Tameka, 38, and vice versa. She eventually left her husband for the superstar, Rush & Malloy writes.

The suits at Usher’s label, Jive Records, are said to be pacing the floor over Foster’s influence and possible takeover.

"They think Jonetta's done an incredible job with his career. They're encouraging her to take on Britney Spears," said a source.

A rep for Usher denied talk that he's firing his mom: "I don't know of any management changes at this time."

T.I. tries to help Eminem deal with Slim Shady

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

T.I. has recorded over 60 songs for his forthcoming album, T.I. v T.I.P., which is scheduled to hit stores on July 3rd. The rapper recently recorded three songs with Eminem. He told MTV.com, "It was an experience. He's probably one of the most lyrical cats in the game right now. Me being known as one of the most lyrical cats in the game, I had to get myself up. He lived up to all my expectations. He's a rappin'fool. He made me step my game up."

T.I. added, "We did three records. One we did for him. You know how Marshall Mathers and Slim Shady have their beefs? Well (on that song), T.I. is trying to tell Marshall how to deal with Slim based on how he deals with Tip. Then Tip butts in, like, 'You can't tell nobody nothing.'Then Em comes in and tells me, 'Who are you to tell me anything?'I was like, 'I'm just trying to help, homie.'"

The other two songs the rappers worked on -- "Touchdown" and "Whatever You Want It to Be" -- may end up on T.I. v T.I.P. T.I. explained about "Touchdown," "It's out of Eminem's norm, if Eminem has a norm. It's a record you wouldn't expect to hear him on, kinda like how you heard (him) on 'Smack That'for Akon or (Em's) 'Shake That'with Nate Dogg. You'll be like, 'OK, he's switching it up.'('Touchdown'is) basically (him) talking about when you touch down in everybody's city, what you do. Hit the mall, buy a car or leave the club with all the girls. We have yet to finish that one."

T.I. added, "The one we finished is 'Whatever You Want It to Be.'It's saying, 'I'm a man, if I ain't nothing else. Before I'm a rapper, before I'm anything else, I'm a man. If you don't respect that, it can be whatever you want it to be.'"

In related news, T.I. has also recorded several songs with Wyclef Jean. The rapper explained, "Me and 'Clef got together over a weekend. We wasn't on each other's itinerary to work with each other. He hit me one day when I was in L.A. and was like, 'I gotta come to Atlanta, you got anywhere I can record?'"

After setting up shop in T.I.'s studio, Jean and the rapper began to crank out hits. T.I. said, "He started pulling up (beats) and I was like, 'Who is that for?'He said, 'You, if you want it.'We wound up knocking seven songs from Friday to Monday. It's just us having a good time. We just bonded."

T.I. v T.I.P. will also feature guest appearances by Nelly, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, and Justin Timberlake.

  • Busta Rhymes arrested on DUI charge

NEW YORK - Busta Rhymes was arrested on a drunken driving charge early Thursday, police said, marking the latest in a series of recent legal troubles for the rapper.

Officers stopped Rhymes at about 12:40 a.m. because the sport utility vehicle he was driving had overly tinted windows, Sgt. Mike Wysokowski said. He said officers then smelled alcohol on the rapper's breath.

Rhymes, 34, was taken into custody on a charge of driving while impaired, Wysokowski said. An arraignment was expected later Thursday.

A lawyer for Rhymes, Scott Leemon, declined to comment saying he would address the charges in court.

A telephone message left early Thursday at the New York office of Rhymes' manager, Violator Management, was not immediately returned.

Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor Smith, has had several law enforcement run-ins since last year. He is tentatively scheduled to go to trial Tuesday on two assault charges.

KRS-One Says Call For Hip Hop Guidelines Isn't New

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Legendary rapper KRS-One weighed in on the recent call by Russell Simmons and the Hip Hop Summit Action Network to clean up hip hop by establishing guidelines and banning certain words. KRS-One shared that he's been down this road before. The rapper said: "KRS-One said in 1994 we need standards. We need to set up a hip hop guild. We need to get a union going. Afrika Bambaataa said the same thing in 1987. In fact that's where I got it from."

KRS-One added: "So here now is Russell Simmons who says the same exact thing. We need guidelines. We need some help."

The rapper believes Simmons has an uphill battle in front of him because it will be difficult to set union form standards.

In related news, KRS-One and Marley Marl will release a new album, Hip Hop Lives, on May 22nd on Koch Records.

The first single from the project is "Kill A Rapper." The song focuses on the unsolved murder of several rap stars.

  • T.I. Races to the Top With Chevrolet's Impala SS

Grand Hustle/Atlantic recording artist T.I. and General Motors Corp. have united for a major promotional blitz celebrating the new Chevrolet Impala SS. The multi-million dollar campaign confirms the Grammy Award-winning rap superstar's status as one of the most visible and influential artists in modern hip-hop.

The promotion -- created in association with Translation Consultation & Brand Imaging, a New York City-based brand marketing firm headed by founder and Chief Creative Officer Steve Stoute -- kicked off late last year with the companion video for T.I.'s top 10 rap smash, "Top Back (Remix)." The clip -- which was a #1 rotation hit at BET and the MTV networks -- featured a number of vintage and current Chevys.

A trio of commercials co-starring T.I. and the new Impala SS followed in early 2007, the first created using footage from the smash "Top Back (Remix)" video. A second commercial, entitled "Infield," effectively merged two of America's biggest cultural phenomena -- hip-hop and motorsports -- by bringing together T.I. and NASCAR legends Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart. The campaign's third installment, dubbed "Ain't We Got Love," made its debut during the 2007 Super Bowl festivities and featured an all-star cast including T.I., Earnhardt Jr., Mary J. Blige, and Big N' Rich.

"Together, the Chevy brand team and Translation have displayed true creativity and vision in partnering with T.I.," said Camille Hackney, Atlantic Senior Vice-President of Brand Partnerships and Commercial Licensing. "This is only the beginning of a relationship that is sure to lead to more innovative concepts and pioneering ideas. T.I. and Atlantic are looking forward to expanding our partnership with Chevy and Translation in the coming months."

"I believe that T.I. represents a mindset shared by many young adults, regardless of gender and race," said Translation founder Steve Stoute. "Chevy is a brand that represents a voice of American Revolution, and T.I. shares some of those same values. The campaign has been very successful, as people have paid attention to the diverse usage of songs from country to hip-hop. Having T.I. represent the hip-hop perspective was the only choice that Translation felt would be solid and authentic."

The success of the Chevrolet promotion marks the beginning of what looks to be T.I.'s biggest year to date. The ATL-based superstar was the king of February's 49th Annual Grammy Awards, scoring the "Best Rap Solo Performance" award for his smash single, "What You Know." T.I. also received an additional prize for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration," marking his alliance with Justin Timberlake on the #1 hit, "My Love." The twin Grammys capped off an incredible 2006-07 awards season for T.I., following his triumphs at last year's BET Awards, BET Hip-Hop Awards, and Billboard Music Awards.

"T.I. vs. TIP," the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2006's RIAA double-platinum, Billboard 200-topping smash, "KING," is slated for release on July 3rd. Recently ranked by XXL Magazine as one of the most anticipated releases of 2007, the album will feature a star-studded line-up of guests, including Justin Timberlake, Eminem, R. Kelly, Nelly, Akon, and Lil' Wayne. The production roster is equally impressive, with contributions from such studio luminaries as Timbaland, Scott Storch, Mannie Fresh, Wyclef Jean, Danjahandz, and Just Blaze.

Later this year, T.I. will follow his acclaimed big-screen acting debut in last year's "ATL" by co-starring in what is among 2007's most anticipated new films, "American Gangster." Due November 2nd, the Ridley Scott-directed crime drama will see T.I. sharing the screen with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. A slate of further projects -- via T.I.'s own Grand Hustle Films -- will be announced in the coming weeks.
