  • Ice Cube takes the Indie Route with new Album

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper and actor Ice Cube has been in the game for some time, so it should come as no surprise that he's decided against releasing his next album through a major label. The rapper told MTV.com, "What is a record company going to do for me that I can't do for myself? Nothing. It's nothing they can offer me to have a major percent of my record. It's really all about ownership at this time. This is not a new page in the game. This an old page. People are caught up in double, triple platinum. That's lovely, but what's double platinum if you not getting double-platinum money? It's all about what you take home to your family at the end of the day, if you gonna make this game a profession."

The rapper added, "At some point, an artist needs to put his money where his mouth is. Stop looking for the next advance. A record company's schedule sometimes don't coincide with what you need to do as an artist. By me not being on no schedules or deadlines, I made a better record because of that."

The rapper has already recorded over 30 songs for his new album, Laugh Now Cry Later, which is scheduled to come out June 6th.

The album will feature the production of Scott Storch, Lil'Jon, and Swizz Beatz, with guest appearances by Juvenile, Snoop Dogg, and Juelz Santana.

Ice Cube has released six full-length solo albums since parting ways with N.W.A. in 1989. The rapper's releases include: 1990's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and 1991's Death Certificate, which were both certified platinum; 1992's The Predator, which was certified double platinum; 1993's Lethal Injection and 1998's War amp; Peace, Vol. 1, which were also certified platinum; and 2000's War amp; Peace, Vol. 2, which was certified gold.

Ice Cube's last release was 2003's platinum-certified Terrorist Threats, which was released by his group, the Westside Connection, which also includes WC and Mack 10.

  • Nas Signs to DEF JAM

The rap superstars Jay-Z and Nas, who hurled bitter insults at each other in rhyme for years in one of rap's most prominent feuds, have reached a deal that would formalize their much-publicized recent truce and transform the two onetime foes into business partners, according to music industry executives involved in the arrangement.

The long-rumored deal sets the stage for Nas to join the artist roster of Def Jam Recordings, the rap label where Jay-Z became president last year in an unusual executive shuffle. But the two stars' personal cease-fire also evolved into an unconventional treaty of sorts between their competing record labels.

As part of the deal, Nas's longtime record company, Sony Music, and Def Jam will split the profits - or any loss - from his next two albums, the sources said. Def Jam is expected to lay out the cost of producing and marketing the recordings, and to divide the profits after recovering its expenses. The two music companies will jointly plan and oversee the albums' marketing campaigns.

The agreement pays Nas about $3 million, including a recording budget, for each of the first two albums, and provides for two additional albums with Def Jam, the sources said. Sony also retains the right to release a Nas greatest hits album, they added.

Representatives from Def Jam and Sony declined to comment.

As a result of the deal, Nas's next album instantly becomes one of hip-hop's most anticipated recordings of the year. It is expected to include the first significant collaboration between two wordsmiths who long battled each other for the title of New York's best rapper.

The two stars stunned fans in October, when Jay-Z was to headline a radio-sponsored concert at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. He had titled the performance "I Declare War" and billed it as a chance to settle scores. Instead, near the end of the show, Jay-Z, announced, "It's bigger than 'I Declare War.' " Nas, dressed in an Army jacket, appeared onstage, and the crowd roared. The two performed and then embraced, ending their long-standing dispute.

The rapprochement was an unusual moment in modern hip-hop, where the list of "beefs," or quarrels between rivals, is so extensive that the commercial rap field occasionally draws comparisons to professional wrestling. But there is a basic difference: the taunts and insults batted back and forth between rappers have occasionally turned into real-world violence, as when a shootout erupted between the entourage of Lil' Kim and supporters of her rival Foxy Brown in 2001 outside the offices of the hip-hop station Hot 97, WQHT-FM.

Indeed, critics have complained that the industry's top rappers, record labels and radio stations intentionally stoke such tensions and imperil lives for financial gain.

Some observers suggest that the rivalry between Nas and Jay-Z - regarded as veterans in a field where music trends shift overnight - had simply worn itself out.

The drama of a feud "sells when you're young and you're believably in a situation where it can be dangerous," said Sacha Jenkins, editorial director of Mass Appeal, an urban lifestyle magazine based in Brooklyn. "It's just not believable from two grown men. I think they're making a unique and potentially wise business decision."

Music executives at the two companies are betting it will be a lucrative one. Nas had one more album due on his contract with Sony; now the company will have, in essence, half of two Nas albums, while remaining in a position to keep working with the rapper on a variety of other projects, including a possible film. For its part, Def Jam and its corporate parent, Universal Music Group, add a respected artist to their ranks at a time when the label is trying to refresh its roster. (Def Jam also recently negotiated the exit of one of its veteran acts, DMX, who signed a reported three-album deal with Sony.)

Shifts in relationships among artists have driven the two companies to make power- and profit-sharing deals before, as in the case of the rock band Audioslave (created from the ashes of the Sony rap-rock act Rage Against the Machine and the Universal grunge-rock band Soundgarden). The two companies take turns distributing the band's albums.

In this case, though, Def Jam and its president will be promoting a rap star whose commercial clout has been called into questioned by Jay-Z himself. Nas, whose real name is Nasir Jones, has sold more than 11 million albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan data, starting with his classic 1994 debut, "Illmatic." (Jay-Z has sold roughly twice that amount.) Nas's most recent release, "Street's Disciple" in 2004, sold an estimated 687,000 copies, though it was a more expensive two-CD set.

Before their recent reconciliation, the two had skewered each other for years in a battle in which they appeared to represent two versions of hip-hop, with Jay-Z cast as the savvy hustler and Nas as the brooding street poet. The rappers emerged as adversaries during the jockeying over who would reign as New York's top rapper after the 1997 shooting death of Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie Smalls.

It boiled over in 2001, when the two released new albums that included songs directly attacking each other. Jay-Z, in the song "Takeover," teased his rival for selling fewer albums, rapping that Nas "fell from top 10 to not mentioned at all." Nas fired back with the incendiary track "Ether," in which he accused Jay-Z of plagiarism, asking "How much of Biggie's rhymes is gon' come out your fat lips?"

Jay-Z then responded with a hastily recorded track, "Super Ugly," that described his affair with the mother of Nas's child. In an interview later on Hot 97, Jay-Z apologized to the woman's family and said his mother had called on his cellphone to chastise him for going too far.

More recently, the two had retreated from their harshest criticisms, but their public peacemaking still caught many fans by surprise.

Mr. Jenkins suggested that the two stars might have realized they had beaten the odds and had the chance to enjoy career longevity in the corporate music world. "In order to be productive in that world," he added, "certain things have to change and you leave certain things behind."

50 Cent and Interscope gets sued by former 2 Live Crew member Luther Campbell

50 Cent stole the opening line for his 2003 hit, “In Da Club,” from a song by former 2 Live Crew frontman Luther Campbell, an attorney claims in a lawsuit. Richard C. Wolfe filed the copyright infringement lawsuit against Curtis James Jackson, aka 50 Cent, in Miami federal court last week on behalf of Lil’ Joe Wein Music.

The 29-year-old rapper only changed one word from the opening line of Campbell’s song from “It’s Your Birthday,” Wolfe said — after repeating the word “go” several times, “Sheila” becomes “shorty” in the line, “Go shorty, it’s your birthday.” Campbell’s song appeared on his 1994 solo album, “Still a Freak for Life.”

“It’s the melody, it’s the pace, the style — everything about that one line is the same,” Wolfe said. “We’re entitled to a portion of the profits.” 50 Cent’s publicist, Dennis Dennehy, said he had no comment on the lawsuit. A message left Friday for Campbell was not immediately returned. Lil’ Joe Wein Music holds the copyright to “It’s Your Birthday” and other songs Campbell produced with his rap group, 2 Live Crew, and as a solo artist.

Lil’ Joe Wein Music is owned by Joseph Weinberger, a lawyer who formerly represented Campbell. Campbell’s song “I Like It, I Love It” can also be heard on the 2003 DVD “50 Cent — The New Breed,” the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages in addition to lawyers’ fees and other legal costs. Wolfe won a $2.3 million judgment against Campbell in 1994 for another rapper who claimed Campbell withheld royalties.

  • Benzino & Dave Mays Kicked Out Of The Source!

Originally posted on Late Nite Noise

Enough is enough. That's what the Hip Hop world has been saying for years in regards to the ridiculous politics that have surrounded The Source magazine. Now it appears the magazine's new board of directors agrees - founder Dave Mays and pseudo-thug/wackest MC alive/hater of the year Ray Benzino have been booted from the magazine. I now take amount to give my opinion on this development:

BAW-HAHAHAHAHA! OO-HOO HOO; AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Stop it - you're killing me! (tears roll down the face)...

(Ahem) Excuse me for not hiding my glee.

Last week, Amos & Andy - I'm sorry - I mean Dave Mays and Benzino went to court and obtained a temporary restraining order from allowing this to happen. But this week, the order was lifted and a majority of the board members voted to treat the duo like Jazz on "The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air". To add insult to injury, former Source chief operating officer Jeremy Miller, who left the magazine in 2004 to start his own Down-South magazine called Down, has been named the new chief executive. 4 our of 6 board members approved Miller taking over.

The Source has been plagued with almost too many problems to name in recent years - eroding fanbase, dissolution of journalistic credibility, loss of advertising revenue and advertisers themselves (due mostly to the shady proceedings and agendas of Benzino), being kicked out of their NYC offices (they moved to a smaller area), defaulting on an 18 million dollar loan, intense finance problems (they are millions of dollars in debt), criminal charges against employees, and a huge sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former employees Michelle Joyce and Kim Osorio. Not to mention Benzino's recent wild rant against Ozone magazine's editor Julia Beverly, where he used racial epithets and called her a "slut-monkey".

    Nice.

Miller's first act was to call a meeting of the entire staff to announce that "all previous beefs are dead", referring to all of the people Benzino beefed with and alienated - including Eminem, 50 Cent, Russell Simmons, and Interscope Records as a whole. He also told the staff to spread the word to clients that there was a new philosophy and focus, and that he would be making decisions with the goal of cutting costs.

While this is long overdue, it remains to be seen if The Source will ever be able to gain it's top position amongst Hip Hop periodicals that it held at it's peak in the mid-90s. And the fight may not be over - word is Benzino and Mays are in New Jersey planning a legal strategy to try and re-take the magazine.

A timeline of how this board that overthrew the Benzino/Mays dictatorship came to be:

The Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street Fund invested $12 million in The Source in return for a minority stake and seats on the company's board of directors. Representatives for The Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street Fund also helped secure an $18 million loan from Textron Financial Corp. for the magazine.

In Oct. 2005, Textron asked The Source to be placed into receivership after the company defaulted on the loan, but the bid was rejected. Meanwhile, because of Black Enterprise's involvement and the default on the loan, the shift of power within the confines of The Source's offices was slowly taking place.

Let's hope this is the last we hear of Ray Ray and Dave Mays - but somehow, I don't think so.

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

That first year when he comes out and they win a championship it's like, 'OK, yeah, that's good.'But that second year, he has to set new goals, he says, 'No, I want this, I'm going for this.'So when I worked on (Late Registration), I kept on saying to (producer) Jon (Brion), 'Are you ready to win Album Of The Year?'"

West is competing against Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney, Gwen Stefani, and U2 in the Album Of The Year category.

  • Cam'Ron talks about the Jay Z situation

    By: R. Motions

The Streets is buzzing by this dis record that leaked from Killa Cam dissing Jay Z. I mean wow. I had plenty of conversations about this situation and how people would think Jay Z would react to this record. Some like Dirty said that Jay Z was beyond this and he making too much money to address someone like Cam. While others like my boy BoTalley was insisting that Jay Z would answer and do cam (pause) like 50 did Ja Rule.

as far as I am concerned, I agree with both which makes it a very hard call. On one hand I agree with Dirty that Jay Z is too big to mess with this, but like I told him, the 'streets are watching' so something has to happen.

    but we will see.

  • MYSTIKAL GETS HIT WITH MORE JAIL TIME

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Incarcerated rapper Mystikal was sentenced to a year behind bars and ordered to pay $271,000 in back taxes plus penalties by a federal judge on Thursday (January 12th). The rapper pled guilty in August to two misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns for 1998 and 1999, when his gross income was $824,915 and $930,953, respectively. The Miami Herald reports that U.S. District Judge James Brady will allow the rapper to serve his sentence concurrently with his current state sentence for sexually assaulting his former hairstylist.

Mystikal, who has been incarcerated since January 2004, and his two bodyguards pled guilty in June 2003 to extortion and sexual battery charges, stemming from an incident in 2002 where he forced his hairstylist to perform sex acts on him and his bodyguards after learning that she had allegedly cashed several unauthorized checks totaling $80,000 from his bank account. Mystikal, who videotaped the sex acts, was originally facing aggravated rape charges, but agreed to a plea deal for the lesser two offenses.

The rapper might be eligible for parole as early as this month. He will have to register as a sex offender upon his release and will be on probation for the next five years.

SOULS OF MISCHIEF DEPART FOR 16 DATE EUROPEAN TOUR

(January 11, 2006) Brooklyn, NY — Indie hip-hop powerhouse Hieroglyphics Imperium announce Souls of Mischief's European tour that includes 16 dates in 6 different countries. Also performing with them throughout the tour is Zion-I. Some select dates include appearances from Lyrics Born, Sadat X, Greg Nice, & Geology.

Souls of Mischief have been honing their skills for nearly two decades. Members A-plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai have cultivated a sound all their own and gained a reputation as one of the best and most original hip-hop groups around. Their track record proves it; their first LP '93 Til Infinity (Jive, 1993) debuted at #14 on Billboard's R&B charts while their second album No Man's Land (Jive, 1995) entered at #27. After having been disappointed with major label politics, Souls, along with childhood friends Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, and Domino, formed their own independent company, Hiero Imperium in 1997, quickly becoming one of the West Coast's best known and respected labels. Souls hasn't achieved the type of success enjoyed by more mainstream acts but being the kingpins of hip-hop is not Souls' style. "We just want to make good music," says Tajai. "Sales are important but we aren't going to compromise our musical quality to sell." Such is the attitude that epitomizes Souls' unique style and appeal.

This excursion marks Souls of Mischief's fifth tour in Europe. Souls and fellow Bay Area trailblazers Zion-I are known for their incredible high-energy shows. "We feed off the energy our fans give us and give it back it live and direct," says Tajai. "Our fans overseas show a real respect for the whole hip-hop culture, not just the rap part. It's been a few years since we performed there so we're definitely looking forward to seeing them and giving them some crazy shows." As they gear up for their ten-year anniversary in 2007, Hiero Imperium is looking to increase their international presence. "Our overseas markets continue to grow and we're taking the necessary steps to beef up our touring schedule both here in the states and abroad," adds Hiero member and CEO Domino. Armed with a renewed sense of enthusiasm, Souls of Mischief look forward to performing in Europe for some of their favorite fans.

BET acquires Lil Kim reality series

BET announced the acquisition of three new reality series, including one starring imprisoned rapper Lil’ Kim.

Famed director Reginald Hudlin of the directing team The Hudlin Brothers, was named President of Entertainment of BET in July of 2005.

Yesterday, Hudlin appeared before TV critics for the first time since being appointed to the position.

He announced the acquisition of “Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown” as well as two other reality series, “Season of the Tiger” and “Meet the Faith for BET’s 2006 season.

Hudlin said he aimed to re-brand BET as a “leader of the new school” that will become a “repository of all black culture.”

“Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown” follows the rapper before she was sentenced to 366 days in prison for perjury, after being found guilty of lying to a federal grand jury about her knowledge of a broad daylight shootout in 2001 in New York.

“Mouth shut, head held high, as she refuses to snitch” was the description Lil’ Kim’s show, when it was presented to critics.

The series features Lil’ Kim at recording sessions, listening parties and spending time with family and friends before she entered The Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

[Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown] takes a very serious look at her life and her choices, and the consequences of those choices,” Hudlin told critics. “It's absurd, and it's tragic.”

“Season of the Tiger” focuses on the lives of three students from Grambling State University, while “Meet the Faith” is a Sunday talk show that will feature various religious leaders discussing the issues of the day.

Hudlin has experience in television production as well as movie making.

He has directed episodes of The Bernice Mac Show, Everybody Hates Chris as well as the classic movies “House Party” “Boomerang” “The Ladies Man” and others.

“Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown” will debut on Mar. 9.

  • Strong sales of The Game's new sneaker helps Skechers U.S.A Inc. shares rise 8%

According to research reports from Wedbush Morgan Securities, Game's Hurricane shoe designed by 310 Motoring has recorded strong sales since its release into stores late last year.

"The product arrived in stores on December 26 and we found that many locations have already sold out and reordered the sneaker," Wedbush analyst Vera Van Ert told the Dow Jones Newswire. "Interestingly, the sneaker was designed in collaboration with rap artist The Game and we noted that sales-thrus were especially strong in his hometown of Los Angeles."

Skechers' stock recently rose to $17.37 a share, showing a $1.24 hike. Van Ert also pointed out that Skechers' popularity is also growing among the young adult demographic and is poised for a bigger growth in the future.

"This is Game's report card to corporate America that he has the power to reach more than just the urban community," Jimmy Henchmen, Game's manager, told SOHH.com. "And he was able to accomplish this without diluting his craft. This is an example that Hip-Hop has open the door that was previously closed."

  • Beanie Sigel Pleads Guilty to Assault

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Philadelphia-based rapper Beanie Sigel pled guilty to misdemeanor simple assault on Tuesday (January 10th), and he was sentenced to two years'probation and ordered to pay $180 in court costs. Allhiphop.com reports that the case stems from an incident which occurred in January of 2003, when Sigel got involved in a physical altercation with a then 53-year-old man outside of a Chinese restaurant. Sigel allegedly punched the man in both eyes, and the man suffered a broken left eye socket.

The rapper entered the guilty plea after agreeing with the prosecution's version of what transpired.

The rapper's lawyer said that Sigel plans to "make music, make movies, and work on his clothing line."

Sigel was acquitted of murder charges last September. He was accused of shooting two men outside of a go-go bar in Philadelphia. Last year, the rapper served several months behind bars after pleading guilty to weapons and drug possession charges.

Ghostface Killah is set to release his second album, Fishscale, under his current deal with Def Jam Records in March. The rapper recently leaked the first single from the project, "Like That" featuring Ne-Yo, who is also signed to Island Def Jam Records. The singer shared his thoughts on being a featured artist on a Ghostface Killah song. Ne-Yo told MTV.com, "Ghostface is one of the most original hip-hop artists around. He's a legend. Just to be considered for the song was an honor. He's true hip-hop."

Ghostface's last studio release was 2004's The Pretty Toney Album.

The rapper recently released an independent project, Put It On The Line, with his frequent collaborator and protege Trife Da God. The set includes some original material from a joint album the two rappers are working on titled, From Stapleton To Somalia, as well as some previously unreleased material from Ghostface Killah including "The Watch" featuring Raekwon and "The Sun" featuring Raekwon and Slick Rick. Both songs were pulled off the rapper's classic 2001 album, Bulletproof Wallets, due to sample clearance issues.

    DMX GETS AN EARLY RELEASE

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper DMX was released from New York City's Rikers Island prison on December 30th after serving a month of a 70-day sentence for violating the terms of his probation. The rapper was placed on probation in December of 2004 after he pled guilty to reckless endangerment and acknowledged he was on Valium when he crashed his SUV into a gate at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City during a road rage incident. Allhiphop.com reports that the rapper was released early for good behavior and because he had accrued credit for time he previously spent incarcerated.

As a term of his probation, DMX's driver's license was suspended, but he was caught behind the wheel twice, once for driving 104 miles an hour near his home and once for an accident with an unmarked police car and another vehicle.

In related news, DMX recently signed a new deal with the Sony Music Group and he's retooling his latest album, Here We Go Again, which was shelved indefinitely by his former label, Def Jam Records.

The rapper will be releasing a new single in the coming months.

LIL'JON FLEXES ACTING CHOPS IN 'DATE MOVIE'

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

  • YOUNG JEEZY AND KEYSHIA COLE?

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

2005 was a breakout year for Young Jeezy, as his debut album, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, was a platinum seller. It was also a good year for Keyshia Cole, as she toured with Kanye West, served as a guest host on BET's 106 amp; Park, and saw sales of her debut, The Way It Is, surpass the gold mark.

The two newcomers are allegedly an item, according to New York City radio station WQHT-FM, which reports that they have been sneaking around since last November's Vibe Awards, in an attempt to keep the relationship quiet.

Neither has ever been romantically linked to any celebrities, and Jeezy has a nine-year-old son from a previous relationship. The rapper is based in Atlanta, while Cole calls Oakland, California, home.

  • JAMIE FOXX TRYING TO PICK NEXT SINGLE

    By: Janine Coveney

Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx is thrilled with the Number One chart status of his new J Records album Unpredictable. And while he's represented on the radio via the smash Kanye West single "Gold Digger," he and label execs are trying to decide on what will be Foxx's next solo single.

The rise of Unpredictable on the Billboard Top 200 is impressive considering the competition, which includes Mary J. Blige and the Notorious B.I.G. "Mary's record is amazing, and of course, there's B.I.G., too," Foxx told MTV.com. "I'm in a comfortable position because everything I go out and do, a TV show or a movie, I can promote my album. So I'm out there humpin'it every day. We want people to know about it because we think it's one of those hits. We want to win."

There's no word on what the next single from the album will be, but Foxx says he's enjoying the debate. "We've been arguing about it," he laughed. "It's a great feeling to have that type of argument. We were in the hotel arguing about which song was the hottest. And that's a good feeling, knowing they're all hot."

He added, "Usually when actors or actresses try to come into the music business, usually it's corny. I'm not like that."

  • CHAMILLIONAIRE DISSED BY SOCCER MOM

Chamillionaire has enough to worry about, as he has an ongoing beef with former partner Paul Wall and Mike Jones, but now the rapper also has to watch his back for Soccer Mom, a British record executive who takes a swipe at the rapper on the upcoming compilation, Road Trip Vol. 5: Revenge Of The Jew, which comes out January 24th. SOHH.com reports that Soccer Mom, whose real name is Shila Mitra, is one of the owners of Texas-based indie distributors, BCD Music Group, which released material by Chamillionaire until September of 2005, when the rapper ended his relationship with the company.

Chamillionaire allegedly made slanderous remarks about the company, which prompted Mitra to record the song, "Jamrags." The song, which utilizes the beat for Jay-Z's "A Million And One," includes references to Chamillionaire's private parts, and Mitra calls the rapper a jamrag, which is British slang for a used maxi-pad.

Mitra doesn't plan on recording any more music, but the Road Trip Vol. 5 compilation includes contributions from fulltime rappers such as Memphis Bleek, Domino, Willie D, and Lil'Flip.

Mitra and the BCD Music Group aren't the only people from Chamillionaire's past that he's severed ties with. The rapper began his career as part of the Swishahouse camp, but these days it's all about his own Universal Records-distributed imprint, Chamilitary.

When us asked the rapper about his relationship with his former label, he was very diplomatic. He said: "I always tell everybody, you know, I'm thankful that Swishahouse was the first place where I started, where I got on at, you know what I'm sayin'? I can never erase that from my history, but you know, I'm not a part of that situation no more. I got my own thing, Chamilitary, you know?"

The rapper added: "I have a lot of history at Swishahouse. I did a lot of stuff with them, a lot of songs, a lot of mixtapes, freestyles, but then it's been a long time since I've been with them. I haven't been with them in a long time. I've been doing my own thing for awhile. The rest of the world is just starting to get a chance to hear a little bit about it right now."

    LIL' KIM EYEING EARLY RELEASE

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Rapper Lil'Kim is scheduled to be released from prison on August 2nd, but according to her lawyer, she might get out as early as June. The rapper's attorney, James Leonard, Jr., told allhiphop.com, "I think this entire experience has unearthed new depths for Kim, both as a person and an artist. I think you will see that in the direction she takes upon her release from prison."

Leonard added, "The warden and the staff at the (prison) have been great with Kim. She has neither sought (nor) received any special treatment. They have respected her privacy and have treated her extremely fair."

If Lil'Kim is released early, she will be under house arrest until August and will have three years'supervised probation. The rapper was initially sentenced to a year and a day for lying to a grand jury investigating a shooting outside of New York City radio station WQHT-FM.

In related news, Lil'Kim's annual toy giveaway was a huge success. The rapper's Lil'Kim Cares Foundation hosted the event in Philadelphia on December 22nd with the help of boxer Zab Judah. Leonard explained, "The charity event was a huge success and something that was very near and dear to Kim's heart."

  • LL COOL J TO SHARE 'TODD SMITH' IN MARCH

    By: Janine Coveney

Rapper and actor LL Cool J is preparing for the March 21st release of his next album, Todd Smith, on Def Jam. The rapper has already leaked the songs "It's LL And Santana," featuring Juelz Santana and "Whatcha Want," featuring Freeway. The album -- which the rapper originally wanted to call The Definition -- will also feature guest appearances by Mary J. Blige, Teairra Mari, 112, Ginuwine, and Mary Mary.

LL has been recording since 1985 and broke into film the same year, playing himself in Krush Groove. The Queens, New York native says the secret to his success thus far is just enjoying what he does: "Well, you know the thing for me is that I love what I do, you know. I don't chase money. The industry that I'm involved in has become very materialistic, and a lot of people really focus on the money that the artists are making and who has money and who doesn't. But you know for me it's been about being passionate about what I do and loving what I do. And doing it so that I can uplift people."

Fans of LL can catch him on the big screen this month opposite Queen Latifah in The Last Holiday, which opens in theaters January 13th.

  • JAY-Z SUPER BOWL PARTY PLANS HIT A SPEED BUMP

    By: Yves Erwin Salomon

Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z has his own chain of 40/40 sports bars, but unfortunately for the rapper, he doesn't have one in Detroit, where he was hoping to throw an event during Super Bowl weekend, which is February 3rd through the 5th. SOHH.com reports that the mogul was denied when he requested use of the Detroit Public Library for an upscale shindig.

Conrad Wilson, head of marketing for the Detroit Public Library, attempted to offer an explanation as to why the rapper's request was turned down. He said, "Many people are asking for venues in Detroit and they are required to go through our formal channels and provide all the information about which buildings they'd like to use, as well as file for all the necessary permits and insurance. If that wasn't done properly, that would be a reason to deny the request."

Jay-Z enlisted MMG concert promoter Demetrius Carrington to organize the event, and Carrington had a different take on what transpired. He said, "They cancelled. We thought it would have been a really unique special thing. They totally screwed us and we ended up losing the whole function. It is ridiculous for a city in such financial shape to deal in such an unprofessional manner."

Carrington, who maintained that he followed the appropriate procedure, added, "For us to be in financial ruins in this city and for somebody to arbitrarily change their minds is ridiculous. We were going to employ 100 security detail. They issued me a preliminary contract; we could've done something legally. I was very disappointed. They have one of the biggest venues in the city that is probably going to sit dark (on) one of the biggest weekends that Detroit will have for a long time."

Jay-Z might still be able to pull off his shindig. He's been in talks with Detroit's C Pop Art Gallery about possibly hosting the event.

  • MARY J. BLIGE'S STYLISH 'BREAKTHROUGH' RACKS UP SALES

    By: Janine Coveney

Vocalist Mary J. Blige is having a very happy New Year indeed, as her brand-new studio album The Breakthrough has proven to be a holiday sales winner. Released on December 20th, the album sold 727,000 copies in its first week, to debut in the Number One position on the Billboard 200 albums chart. That sales showing gives Blige the best opening week for a solo Ramp;B female artist in the Nielsen SoundScan era, according the Billboard.com.

The Breakthrough also bests the first-week showing of the singer's previous album, 2003's Life amp; Love. Blige says the new album represents the stronger, more positive place she finds herself spiritually. "My goal was to make my fans happy, and I knew that Love amp; Life was something that disappointed them," she told Billboard.com. "None of us were in a good place. Too many cooks spoiled the soup. You had (co-producer P. Diddy) saying, 'Do this, do that,'and I wanted something else. I have to give the glory to God (for) giving me the strength and guidance to do this."

Sales may well have been helped by Blige's high-profile media blitz, including television appearances, magazine covers, and her designation by Vibe Magazine as a V Legend for both her talent and her personal style. Blige, who debuted in 1991 with the multi-platinum What's The 411?, began her career wearing mostly baggy hip-hop clothes and has evolved into a fashion icon. She recently explained: "I can't change what's in my heart, and what was in my heart is what made me dress like a dude-- and that's comfort and just, you know, I guess a more masculine side than a more feminine side. I'm not as feminine as most women because I'm just not into that. But I'm definitely into being comfortable and making people feel comfortable."

Blige's single from the set, "Be Without You," stands at Number One on Billboard's Hot Ramp;B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

    Eminem protege wounded in shooting

Someone in another car shot through the back window of 28-year-old Trice's vehicle as he drove along the Lodge Freeway around 1:10 a.m., said Michigan State Police Sgt. Mario Gonzales.

The Detroit native managed to continue driving and got off the freeway in the suburb of Southfield, where his girlfriend, also in the vehicle, flagged down police, Gonzales said. The girlfriend wasn't wounded.

Police didn't release where the bullet struck Trice. He was taken to Providence Hospital, where he was treated and released, said hospital spokesman Brian Taylor.

There were no suspects in the shooting, which was under investigation by state police detectives, Gonzales said.

Trice contributed to the song "Drips" on Eminem's 2002 album "The Eminem Show" and got more exposure by delivering the opening lines "Obie Trice-real name, no gimmicks" on the lead single "Without Me."

In addition to Eminem, Trice also has rapped with 50 Cent. Trice's 2003 debut album "Cheers" was produced by Eminem, and he also had a small part in the feature film "8 Mile," which starred Eminem.

Trice was signed to Eminem's label, Shady Records, a joint venture with Universal Music Group's Interscope Records. Messages seeking comment were left Saturday for UMG and Shady Records.

    Biggie & Bad Boy Sued

(Originally posted on Late Nite Noise)

Well, it had been a good few months for Diddy and Bad Boy Records. His "Making The Band 3" did phenomenally in the ratings along with his other show, "Run's House" (he produces it) on cable network MTV. He dropped Black Rob's 2nd album to critical acclaim, and just this past week The Notorious B.I.G.'s Duets: The Final Chapter had huge 1st week sales of well over 400,000. Not to mention he finally settled the publishing situation with ex-Bad Boy members The Lox. Life was good - what could go wrong?

    A lawsuit - that's what.

Bad Boy Records, the estate of The Notorious B.I.G. and Universal Records, which distributed Ready To Die, are all currently being sued for samples used on he late rapper's debut album. Bridgeport Music, Inc. and sister company Westbound Records have launched a copyright infringement lawsuit for samples used on the late rapper's 1994 classic album. The suit says Biggie, Bad Boy, and Universal Records never received permission for samples used on "Machine Gun Funk", "Gimme The Loot" and "Ready To Die".

"Ready to Die" and "Gimme the Loot" used samples from the Ohio Players' "Singing In The Morning," and "Machine Gun Funk" used a sample from the Horny Horns' "Up For The Down Stroke." Bridgeport owns the copyright for both compositions.

Lawyers for both sides met before a U.S. District Court Magistrate in Nashville, Tennessee last week on a defense motion to dismiss some legal claims before trial. The trial is being held there seeing as both sides' legal teams are based in Tennessee and both sides have business interests there.

Bad Boy and Universal's legal team maintains that Bad Boy had the proper licenses to record the songs and adds that Westport has no federal copyright claim to the song "Singing In The Morning." The sound recording for that song appears to have been copyrighted in 1971, before sound recordings were granted federal copyright protection.

The prosecution refutes that claim and is also seeking damages under state laws in Michigan and Tennessee that he says apply. As of Tuesday (December 27), the Magistrate had not ruled on the motions, which also seek to dismiss Universal as a defendant.

Bridgeport and Westbound, both owned by Armen Boladian, own the rights to hundreds of popular 1970s funk recordings. Since 2001, Bridgeport has filed over 400 lawsuits - 477 to be exact - against music and entertainment companies claiming copyright infringement.

Since Ready To Die has sold over 4 million copies, both parties have a lot at stake in this lawsuit. The three cases involving Ready To Die would be the first Bridgeport cases to reach jury trial. Most have been settled and a few dismissed.

"Mo' money, mo' problems', huh Puff?

  • Pimp My Ride Comes To An End

(Originally posted on Late Nite Noise)

    West Coast Customs

Ah, the end of an era. MTV and West Coast Customs, the cats who do the pimpin' on "Pimp My Ride", have called it quits, meaning the end of the show's run on the cable network. At the center of the split was owner Ryan Friedlinghause's concerns about his company's image (surely he didn't want to be known as a company known for it's - gasp - Hip Hop affiliations!).

But don't fret if you're a fan - a new show with the West Coast Customs team will be popping up on The Discovery Channel, which already has tons of vehicle re-make shows such as the popular "American Chopper" and "American Hot Rod". The new show will shift it's focus to work on helicopters, buses, private jets and other not so "pimpish" vehicles.

No word if Xzibit will still be involved, but the marriage between MTV and West Coast Customs proved to be profitable for both sides - besides the increase in business and notoriety, WCC will be moving their headquarters to a 21,000 square foot corporate-style building/warehouse in an industrial park in Corona, which has a thriving auto industry. Not to mention a version of the show debuted in the U.K. earlier this year.

    Somebody say "Pimpin' ain't easy!"

Snoop Dogg pays tribute to Stanley Williams

The rapper attends the former death-row inmates' funeral.

Hip-hop star Snoop Dogg paid special tribute to Stanley 'Tookie'
Williams at the executed former gang leader's Los Angeles funeral yesterday (Dec. 20.

Over 1,500 supporters of the Crips founder-turned-peace activist attended the funeral, which was watched on a large TV set by the overflow of mourners.

Snoop Dogg recited a poem titled 'Until We Meet Again' at the service, according to AllHipHop.com. Williams himself left a tape recorded message, urging those present to spread a positive message.

He said on the tape, "Teach them how to avoid our destructive footsteps. Teach them to strive for higher education. Teach them to promote peace and teach them to focus on rebuilding the neighbourhoods that you, others and I helped to destroy."

Williams, 51, was convicted for the 1979 murder of four people during a Los Angeles robbery. He was executed by lethal injection on 13 December (05), hours after California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denied his plea for clemency.

    Africa.

  • Westcoast CD Aims At Unnecessary Gang Violence

Los Angeles, CA - Watts Records, LLC today announced the national release of Peace Warriors, a new CD featuring Watts Hip Hop and R&B artists performing songs that inspire listeners to support an end to gang warfare and other senseless violence that plagues U.S. cities. Young talented rappers and singers from the Watts community raised in the midst of gang violence have joined with established performers to create music that speaks to real issues and takes Hip Hop back to the streets where it was originally formed. This music carries a message of peace that began with the signing of the historic Crips and Bloods Peace Treaty in Watts in 1992.

The CD features for the first time ever a live-band remake of "Express Yourself" featuring the legendary Charles Wright of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band performing a new, socially conscious Hip Hop version of the 1970 hit. The original "Express Yourself," which made it to number 12 on the Billboard charts, has been introduced to today’s generation through numerous advertising campaigns including Burger King, Gatorade and recently as the promotional theme song for the 2005 NBA All-Star Weekend. Wright’s funk-infused vocals and the wicked flows of the various peace warrior rappers and vocalists make this new version the perfect song for young and old alike and establishes peace on the streets as the new way to "express yourself."

Former Death Row/OFTB rapper Flipside, who was raised in Watts, delivers a hard core rhyme with "Something Wicked," painting a vivid picture of the reality of gangs in Watts…it’s where we took the American flag and tore it in half…made red and blue rags and let our pants sag…brainwashed to protect our community, bustin’ at any nigga’ that came through new to me. The first single from the CD "Tears in the Rain" reveals the self-reflecting, insightful thoughts of rapper Pipe the Snipe from Watts Jordan Downs Projects. The song is set to a haunting, melodic beat, offering ambience to a story of personal pain and redemption.

The satirical narrative on police abuse, "Mr. Officer," addresses the issue of racial profiling in a fun west coast laid-back style. The sensuous yet hard-edged ballad "Dark Side" tells the story of a woman struggling with the reality that the man she loves is still tied to the dangerous street life she fears will be his doom. While the album is full of message lyrics, the club rocking "Bank Roll" is a straight party cut that will have listeners bouncing in their cars and at the hottest nightspots.

"This music captures what it is to live and struggle in an urban war zone. These young peace warriors want to remind people that the greatest heroes are champions of peace not perpetrators of violence, that peace is not a refuge of the soft and weak but a noble ideal both positive and powerful," said Aqeela Sherrills, co-founder of Watts Records.

"The Peace Warriors album is about real people who grew up facing real life-threatening situations rapping about how gang violence is nothing to glorify and how rappers pretending to be gangsters does not truly represent the reality of the street," said Watts Records co-founder Douglas Roddy.

Peace Warriors is now available in stores in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, DC, Charlotte, Greensboro, Richmond and Norfolk and is expanding to stores nationwide. The CD is also available online at www.wattsrecords.com.

Watts Records, LLC is a partnership between Community Self-Determination Institute, a Watts-based social profit organization and Diverse Entertainment, a music production and marketing firm. The record label was founded in 2003 with the financial support of 154 Entertainment.

  • Hip Hop Album Release Party Ends With 3 Stabbed

Three people were stabbed early Wednesday at a Manhattan club that was hosting a record release party for a new collection of duets featuring slain rapper Notorious B.I.G.

Detectives also were investigating a shooting near the club, named Exit, that occurred around the same time. It was unclear if the two incidents were related.

Authorities could not confirm reports that the party was attended by Sean "Diddy" Combs and Notorious B.I.G.'s mother, Voletta Wallace. The two co-produced the new "Duets" record, which pairs the rapper's vocals with Eminen, Jay-Z and other artists.

Police said that at 3:10 a.m., patrol officers heard gunfire at a parking garage near the club. Inside, they found three men with gunshot wounds; all were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Moments later, police received a 911 call reporting a stabbing at the club. Officers found three victims _ two men who were slashed in the face and one who was stabbed in the stomach; all were hospitalized.

There were no arrests. Detectives were questioning the occupants of a car spotted fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting.

  • Rap Contest Offers Recording Contract

The producers of TURN UP THE MIC are accepting applications for a contest that will result in someone becoming a reality TV R&B / HIP HOP star with a recording contract worth an estimated $1 million.

Contestants are to submit their application along with a 1 minute video on DVD and the $15 entry/evaluation fee by US mail. Applications and entry requirements are available through www.turnupthemic.com.

The winner of TURN UP THE MIC will win an estimated $1,000,000 recording contract and tour next year with the JACROZ GO-LIVE TOUR 2006. The contest is open to ages 8 - 45.

The show is from the creative mind of Harry Keane Jr., the Irving man (now living in Rowlett) who sued Fox and the Producers of American Idol claiming he came up with the original concept and idea in 1994. There was never a denial of Mr. Keane’s creation. The Southern District Court of Texas (Civil Action #H-03-1642) decided that because Mr. Keane sent out his concept and idea unsolicited, he failed to protect his ownership interest.

Mr. Keane is still embroiled in his lawsuit to protect others from going down this road ever again. No matter which laws are re-written, in Mr. Keane’s eyes and in the eyes of millions of fans around the world, he has been the victim of plain theft no matter how you look at it.

Mr. Keane has never stopped developing his creative ideas. In the midst of all this lawsuit has put him through, Mr. Keane has risen to the top yet again. After eleven months of researching, developing and writing, Mr. Keane’s new show TURN UP THE MIC (a registered trademark of Turn Up The Mic, LP.) and written for Twister Entertainment, Ltd. shows you can’t keep a creative mind down. The producers required me to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement before I could learn the details of the show. Without giving away his concept and idea, I can say that what I have read reveals this show is as good as it gets in reality television.

Turn Up The Mic has a web-site which enables an artist/contest entrant to send in a 1 minute video of his/her audition along with an on-line contestant application and a $15 entry/evaluation fee.

Sony Music Picks Up Rapper DMX

DMX, who is currently serving a 70-day jail sentence for driving with a suspended license, has left his longtime recording home of Def Jam and is headed for a new ground.

According to MTV News, once the Yonkers native is released from jail, he is Sony Music bound, where he has reportedly signed a deal.

DMX has cut all ties with Def Jam after hinting earlier this year that Jay-Z's new position at the label has put a strain on their relationship.

The rapper was previously signed with Columbia (which is now part of Sony Music) back in the early '90s, but after recording for the label, his music never saw the light of day.

X has released five #1 albums for Def Jam including his quadruple platinum debut, It's Dark and Hell is Hot, in 1998. The rapper had stated in the past his frustration with Def Jam and was supposedly retiring after his last album, The Grand Champ was released, but it seems he has had a change of heart.

The rapper's new Def Jam album, Here We Go Now, was scheduled for release earlier this year, but has since been put on indefinite hold

Irv Gotti Talks About His Trial: 'I Was Scared To Death'

ENCINO, California — Fresh from being exonerated of money-laundering charges, where do you imagine Irving "Irv Gotti" Lorenzo would go? To visit his family in Hollis, Queens? Straight to work at his Manhattan recording studio, the Crackhouse? Maybe even out to Beverly Hills to get some sun and collect his thoughts?

Sure, you could picture any of those things, but that's not where he went. No, we found the hip-hop mogul in a quiet cul-de-sac in Encino, the town made famous by Brendan Fraser's "Encino Man" and where economy cars and minivans line quiet, unglamorous streets. But as the neighbors have come to find out during the five years since Irv and Ja Rule purchased their "Murder Inc. Pad," the serenity can easily turn hyphy.

It's a place where Bloods and Crips have partied in unity, stars like Tyrese have danced with girls so beautiful they make the contestants on "America's Next Top Model" look like scallywags, and it's the spot where Irv and two of his right-hand men, B.J. and Dan Tan, are lounging before going back to NYC.

"The fruits of our labor," Irv said, referring to the home. "This is one of the things that we afforded ourselves to get. It's a nice peaceful home in L.A. where we get away when we want to get away. When we wanna party, we throw a party."

On December 2 — the day he was finally free and clear after being investigated for three years (see "Gotti Brothers Found Not Guilty Of Money Laundering") — Irv definitely partied. His friends rented a yacht and all his loved ones celebrated with Irv and his brother/co-defendant, Chris.

"I'm on cloud nine," Irv said with a grin as he sat next to his heated pool. Given the number of gray hairs now taking residence on his head, however, it's obvious the case got to him. Now that it's over, that stress has been replaced by "a feeling of surrealness," he said. "It's an overall happy feeling for a lot of reasons. It's a happy feeling that my mom and dad ain't gotta worry no more. Just watching them come to court and seeing my mom with the stress, I couldn't help her, I couldn't ease the pain until it was over.

"It's a happiness that the jurors saw through everything and did the right thing," he continued. "It's a happiness that after three years, the cloud the government put over my head is removed. And the sun is now shining. I got my life back and people don't have to be afraid to come near me. People don't have to say, 'Well, if I mess with him, is the government gonna bother me?' "

By raiding his offices and studio, calling into question his friendship to convicted drug dealer Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff and dirtying his name in the media, the government basically put his professional and personal life on halt, Gotti said. He's even been quoted as saying that he thinks the whole case came about because of his "Gotti" nickname and his label's former "Murder Inc." moniker.

"I love this country," he said. "I don't want to live nowhere else. All I'm gonna say is with me they had it wrong. They need to understand hip-hop more. Once they understand us, they would know. I'm nicknamed Irv Gotti, [but] it doesn't mean nothing. There's people nicknamed Noreaga, Fatal Hussein, it's just a nickname. It's not he's Saddam Hussein or wants to be Saddam Hussein. It's a nickname. [Gotti] is a nickname I didn't even give to myself. Hov gave me the nickname and it's stuck."

Gotti said all he wants to do is go back to making music. The last thing he wants is more beef with the government. "They investigated me, and I hope they see they got it wrong and I didn't do anything wrong," he said. "Let me go back to being a great earner. I'll pay my taxes, just leave me alone."

The trial of the Gottis was far from the drawn-out ordeal some had predicted. The trial began November 16 and ended just over two weeks later, with the defense resting after just two hours with only one witness on the stand, a former IRS agent (see "Gotti Defense Team Rests After Only Two Hours").

"We felt the government didn't prove the case and I didn't want to drag my friends ... my witnesses were gonna be a very extensive, a who's who in the business artistwise and executivewise, to explain who I was and where I got my money," Gotti explained. "I didn't want the government to dive into their past, like, 'Yeah, Irv's a good guy but do you know what you did back in '83?' I didn't want them to have to go through that. I made a decision with my attorneys and my brother: 'They didn't prove their case, let's get it over with.' "

If only it were that easy. Gotti tells a tale of an agonizing wait for the jury to deliberate. Since he'd never been to court before, he thought he could go home and wait until the jury came to a verdict. He quickly found out that he had to wait in court during deliberations.

"You sit and you wait and you're scared like you wouldn't believe," he said. I.G. can laugh and joke about the situation now, but a couple of weeks ago he would cringe each time the jury sent a note to the judge. (" 'Somebody must be saying I'm guilty,' " he remembered telling his lawyer. "Each time a note comes out it's like, 'Oh God, no.' ")

"I was scared to death, but I also wanted it over," he added. "I was tired of waking up with the knots in my stomach and I was like, 'Whatever it is, let it be. If my destiny is to go to jail for 10, 20 years, I'm ready and let's do it. If my destiny is to get my life back, let's do that.' I was ready to face whatever I was gonna face."

And just like that, a little after 6 p.m. on December 2, the Gottis were free men.

"I'd never been in tune with God like how I've been in tune with God [lately]," Gotti said. "It's a clarity."

After the trial, the jurors requested to meet with Irv and his mother. One of the jurors even told him that she wasn't going to let anything happen to him.

There's still a long road to go for the Lorenzos. With the legal problems put aside, they have to get back on track with their record company (see "Ashanti Eager To Put Her Label's Legal Woes Behind Her"). The Collectables by Ashanti remix album and Ja Rule's Exodus greatest-hits LP both went virtually unnoticed in their first week of release, and their 2004 studio albums both failed to reach 1 million in sales.

Gotti blames the Inc's recent sales dip on sabotage from the higher ups at the Universal Music Group. Although he said he has no problems with Jay-Z or L.A. Reid at Def Jam (he still considers Jay a close friend and said his respect for Reid is immense), he and all the artists on his roster have defected from the label and are looking for a new distribution home. Irv said he's gotten calls from plenty of CEOs and he fully expects the Inc. (the "Murder" is still officially dropped from the label name, but Irv said he realizes people will always refer to it as Murder Inc.) to get back on its feet in 2006.

    — Shaheem Reid

  • Kanye Tops Rolling Stone's Best Of 2005

Kanye West says he's the best, and Rolling Stone magazine thinks so, too.

Rolling Stone just released its "Top 50 Best Records of 2005," and West's "Late Registration" is No. 1 on the list.

The music magazine describes "Late Registration" as "a sweepingly generous, absurdly virtuosic hip-hop classic" and offers praise for West, saying, "he can do it all."

"A Bigger Bang" -- from the Rolling Stones -- is No. 2 on Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums list, and the White Stripes' "Get Behind Me Satan" is No. 3. Other artists to make the Top 10 include Fiona Apple, Bruce Springsteen, My Morning Jacket, Beck, Bright Eyes, Sufjan Stevens and 50 Cent.

  • Prodigy Calls Nas A "Milkshake"...

Mobb Deep takes the mantra "All for one, and one for all" to heart. As recent additions to 50 Cent's G-Unit squad, Prodigy and Havoc have already taken shots at The Game and Nas. SOHH.com recently sat down with one-half of the duo to discuss why.

"I got beef with everybody that don't like me," says the Queens native. "I don't give a fuck about none of those niggas out there. Anybody that got beef with 50 Cent got beef with me. That's the King... Mobb Deep-G-Unit!"

As for the beef with Nas, Prodigy said that's over.

"There is no real beef with Nas," he said. "We call him Milkshake. Milkshake's not even no competition no more. We respect him though, because he's from around our way."

50 recently said he had a moratorium on Dr. Dre working with The Game, so what does that mean for Havoc who has produced for both Jadakiss and Game?

"Hav can shop beats to whoever he wants to," explained Prodigy. "We could still do ads for [clothing company] Southpole, it just doesn't make sense. It's about what is going to make the most money. Hav works hard for those beats. Should he give a beat to someone that isn't going to do nothing with it or someone like Eminem or Dr. Dre for The Detox? Niggas come around with the right check they can get a Hav beat. Matter [of] fact, the right check might get you a verse from P."

Beefs aside, Prodigy is excited about the duo's new album, Blood Money, which is slated for early next year.

"There are no guest artists, just Mobb Deep and G-Unit," said the rapper. "It's gonna be crazy, we're changing rap music. We're making some more history. Hav did 90% of the production on the album. We're making history though, in terms of money being spent, the lyrics, the way it will be promoted, the products we're putting out-everything."

While some Mobb fans have questioned the wisdom in moving away from their independent stronghold toward the controversial G-Unit family, Prodigy begs to differ.

"We eating off this Mob Deep shit," he said. "We just getting the audience that we want now. We not going nowhere no time soon. Fans we had from The Infamous and all our pre G-Unit albums, we love them, but it's a fact our fan base now is bigger and there are a whole lot more new fans, millions of them.

"We are just getting started," added Prodigy. "There are nine million more people out there, we want those Eminem sales. We know about the demographics: 80% of hip hop audience is white, 6% is black. Mobb Deep been had the hood, we got the hood. It's the white consumer that we haven't had. We had them a little bit, but we want that audience Eminem got, 50 got, Dr. Dre got. That's why we say we just getting started. There is a whole new generation that Mobb Deep can reach."

The duo is so focused on their new set, Prodigy says he didn't even follow the Murder Inc. money laundering case.

"If it ain't got to do with my team, I don't give a fuck to tell you the truth," he said. "For anybody to beat a case I feel happy for them because I don't like the system, the government, none of that. It's good to see another black man win a case."

Mobb Deep's Blood Money will be in stores on March 21.

Ed Lover Arrested on Assault Charges!

NEW YORK, NY (12.17.05) -- Ed Lover, hip-hop radio personality from Power 105.1 in New York, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with two counts of third-degree assault, one count of attempted assault and one count of second-degree harassment following an incident early Sunday morning in a New York Chelsea nightclub.

42 year old Lover, (real name James Roberts), is accused of punching a Letitia Belford, a 26-year-old woman in the left cheek , at Duvet early Sunday. The blow left the victim with a mild concussion and a gash requiring 20 stitches.

According to police records, Lover, who works the afternoon shift on New York's Power 105.1, turned himself over to the authorities with attorney Michael Berger by his side. Lover was arraigned later that afternoon and released on $1,000 bail. Lover is due in court on March 23. According to court documents, Lover — a former Yo! MTV Raps host and occasional actor — was at club Duvet with a group of friends when the victim bumped into one of his female companions.

The two women started fighting and one of the club's bouncers intervened. Lover allegedly worked his way around the bouncer and punched the victim in the face. Police had been looking to question Lover about the incident for most of the week. Belford's attorney, Andrew Laskin, complained that workers at the trendy W. 21st St. club gushed over Lover while his client gushed blood. "The club was much more concerned about him," he said. "They didn't try to stop him. They didn't hold him. They didn't call 911."

Feds Plan To Introduce 50 Cent Shooting In Kenneth McGriff's Trial

The May 2000 shooting of rapper 50 Cent will be introduced as evidence against The Inc. associate, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, who is facing the death penalty in March 2006 on racketeering, narcotics and murder charges

On Friday (Dec. 12), the U.S. Attorney’s office confirmed they will introduce evidence that McGriff was involved in 50 Cent's shooting in 2000.

This also opens up the possibility that 50 himself will be subpoenaed to testify in court.

Federal prosecutors alleged that McGriff laundered his drug proceeds through companies controlled by The Inc.’s Irv and Chris Lorenzo, charges the brothers were recently vindicated of in a highly publicized trial.

50 Cent was shot in May 2000. Early descriptions described the shooter as a black male in a black short sleeved shirt, with a stocky build.

Prosecutors allege 50 was shot for name checking McGriff and other Queens, New York drug dealers and for feuding with The Inc.’s Ja Rule.

Attorneys for the government unsuccessfully attempted to introduce 50 Cent’s shooting in the trial of the Lorenzo brothers, alleging that Ja Rule’s bodyguard, Robert “Sun” Lyons was the triggerman behind the May 2000 shooting, on orders of McGriff.

50 Cent has stated in numerous interviews and on records that the shooter was Darryl “Hommo” Baum.

Baum was later allegedly murdered on orders of Lil’ Kim’s ex-boyfriend Damion “World” Hardy in an unrelated retaliatory slaying.

50 Cent’s feud with The Inc. and his subsequent shooting in 2000, New York, helped catapult the rapper to superstardom.

“Evidence related to 50's shooting was introduced into Irv and Chris Gotti's trial but was thrown out by the judge because it was ruled irrelevant to their case,” author Ethan Brown told AllHipHop.com.

Brown is the author of “Queens Reigns Supreme : Fat Cat, 50 Cent, and the Rise of the Hip Hop Hustler,” a detailed look into McGriff’s Supreme Team drug dealing crew, other Queens New York drug dealers and their connection to various players in the Hip-Hop world.

“It makes much more sense for the Feds to introduce evidence related to 50's shooting into McGriff's trial as he is facing several murder counts,” Brown stated. “The Gotti’s, conversely, were simply charged with money laundering."

The Lorenzo’s have repeatedly denied involvement in 50 Cent’s shooting, which has been mythologized by 50 Cent himself in albums and in his film debut, “Get Rich or Die Tryin.”

McGriff is also charged with the slaying of another Queens, New York rapper, Eric “E Money Bags” Smith.

E Money Bags allegedly shot a close associate of McGriff’s, Colbert “Black Just” Johnson, who later died of his wounds.

Authorities contend that McGriff put E Money Bags under surveillance and later in 2001, gunman open fire on the rapper as he sat in his SUV parked on a Queens street, killing him instantly.

Federal prosecutors also plan to introduce evidence of other violent acts by McGriff and/or “The Supreme Team.”

Some of the evidence includes an incident where a man was thrown through a barbershop window, an incident where McGriff allegedly plotted to murder a woman pregnant with his child and an incident where McGriff allegedly ordered a man murdered for bumping into him at a nightclub.

  • YOUNG BUCK CLOSE TO REACHING PLEA DEAL

G-Unit rapper Young Buck is close to reaching a plea deal in his aggravated assault case. Allhiphop.com reports that the rapper's lawyer told Nashville's News 2 that a plea agreement had been reached but he could not disclose any of the details until the December 12th court date in Santa Monica, California. Buck was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly stabbing Jimmy James Johnson after Johnson punched Dr. Dre during the taping of the Vibe Awards in November of 2004. If Young Buck goes to trial, the rapper could face up to eight years behind bars if he is found guilty.

In related news, Young Buck's court date this Thursday (December 8th) in New York City in relation to weapons charges has been pushed back to January 26th. Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, and 11 other men were arrested when authorities pulled over their van for allegedly running a red light after an Anger Management 3 tour date at New York City's Madison Square Garden in August.

Police recovered a .357 handgun from passenger Steven Roker, and he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. A loaded .40-caliber handgun was found on the floor of the van, so everyone was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Another passenger, Darryl Lighty, was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

  • TWO PEOPLE SHOT DURING LIL FLIP SHOW IN MINNEAPOLIS

Two people suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds when gunfire erupted outside a Lil' Flip concert at the Quest nightclub in downtown Minneapolis early Sunday morning (December 4th). MTV.com reports that the two concertgoers, one male and one female, were shot on the corner outside of the venue at approximately 2 a.m., just 30 minutes after the rapper hit the stage. Police spokesperson Ron Reier said, "A couple of officers actually saw the muzzle blast from the gun so they were very, very close."

The authorities immediately shut the venue down and conducted a search of all the patrons. One man was cuffed but according to authorities no arrests have been made.

A concertgoer explained that the shooting began inside the club although the venue had metal detectors. He said, "Some dude got shot up in there, because they were acting crazy. I don't even understand what the whole thing was about. They were shooting on the floor."

In related news, Lil Flip will release his new album, I Need Mine, on December 27th. The first single from the project is "What It Do" featuring Mannie Fresh.

I Need Mine will feature the production of Salaam Remi and Scott Storch with guest appearances by Lyfe Jennings and Nate Dogg.

Young Jeezy Says He And T.I. 'Kinda Got The Game In A Chokehold'

How do you make a Snowman feel warm on the inside? By showing him some love, of course, and you'll have plenty of chance to do so in the near future.

"If feels good 'cause we're away from Atlanta and we're still reppin'," Jeezy said about headlining the Georgia Power Tour with T.I (see "T.I., Young Jeezy Hitting The Road On Georgia Power Tour"). "We're gonna bring it to everybody's 'hood and keep it 'hood."

Forget King Kong — Young Jeezy says the reception he's been getting is "Godzilla" huge and sometimes it doesn't feel real.

"How I'm gonna go to Detroit and they feeling me? I'm from Georgia," he said, smiling. "That's extra special, homie! You go to New York and they feeling me, that's extra special, homie! It means one thing: They're feeling the movement. It's the beginning of the beginning.

"For me and Tip to be out together, that's big for me," he added. "It makes me think about when Jay and Big ran the city. It's on like that. We kinda got the game in a chokehold. You're getting two of the best. Ain't no way around that. ... For me and Tip to live that legacy, that's what it is."

Jeezy's Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 has already passed the 1 million sales mark and is still climbing. Being in a boss playa position has allowed Jeezy to lay out his own plans rather than let Def Jam tell him what to do, so Jeezy stuck to his guns and recently shot — and partially directed — the video for "Trap Star."

" 'Trap Star' is my favorite song on the album, so I really took my time and put it together," he said of the video. "I went out to L.A., shot it the way I wanted to shoot it. It's crazy 'cause I sat down there and wrote it and it came out how I wrote it. To see that, it's like, 'Damn, I could write a movie if I'd like.' "

"Trap Star" might remind you of a Samuel L. Jackson movie, actually: Jeezy's treatment was inspired by the flick "S.W.A.T."

"I wanted to get everybody incorporated: the Bloods, the Crips, the women, the eses," he said. "It was bigger than the video to me. A dude from Georgia is in L.A., you got [West Coast Bloods] here, East Coast Crips there. I got a lot of my Spanish partners from East L.A. It was bigger than a song. I am a trap star because I got all these people together. We ate together, talked together, we kicked it. No violence, nothing. Nobody called cop cars. Nobody set-tripped, nobody pulled out no guns. It was thug motivation. That means 30, 40 people are going to go back to their 'hoods and say, 'It wasn't so bad. We can be cool.' That's why I call it 'thug motivation.' "

Jeezy is already working on his next solo LP as well a group album from his clique the U.S.D.A, which also includes MCs Slick Pulla and Blood Raw.

Check out the feature "Young Jeezy: Putting His Mouth Where His Money Is" for an in-depth interview with the Atlanta rapper.

Diddy & The Lox Settle Publishing Dispute

The Lox and Bad Boy mogul Sean”Diddy” Combs have settled a music publishing dispute after a furious on-air clash that was broadcast on Hot 97 last month.

Group members Styles P and Sheek re-appeared on Angie Martinez’s Hot 97 radio show today in a state of euphoria.

“What he did was sweet. He came back [with his offer] and I almost jumped out my seat,” Styles P said to Angie Martinez. “Basically, he gave us all our publishing back. He didn’t have to do what he did. In the business world, what he did, was like a four-leaf clover. The results was great.”

Styles said both parties assembled today with their lawyers and made a mutually satisfactory decision in a 45-minute meeting.

“What he did for us, he didn’t have to do. What he did for us was splendid. He made it so much easier. He made our business beautiful,” Styles continued.

After the initial clash on November 16 and Diddy's response, Styles said he talked to his former CEO on the phone and had a frank conversation.

“Before the [legal] meeting I spoke to him over the phone. He said, ‘I want to meet up, look y’all in the eye and speak as men. The bottom line is we can fix it.’” Furthermore, Styles said that their whole quarrel was a “miscommunication.”

“What he was saying was true, but what we were saying was true,” the Yonkers native asserted. “Its an argument where you could say both sides were right. It was grown man, eye to eye.”

Prior to the resolution, Styles said The Lox’s living conditions were “uncomfortable” and an “irritating situation to be in.” Additionally, he apologized profusely for their initial public dispute and remarks that could have been perceived as threats.

Styles implored that other rappers should be mindful of their business dealings and to understand their worth as entertainers.

“I think the problem with the whole game is artists don’t stand for themselves,” he said.

Sean “Diddy” Combs wasn’t available for comment at press time.

Foxy Brown's Case Adjourned Until Dec. 23

NEW YORK (AP) - Rapper Foxy Brown is almost totally deaf, her lawyer said Monday.

Attorney Joseph Tacopina disclosed Brown's hearing problem after a question about why they exchanged notes while waiting in Manhattan Criminal Court for her case to be called on an unresolved 2004 assault charge.

"She's pretty much totally deaf now," Tacopina said. "She can't hear me. We have to write things back and forth. Anything I have to communicate with her now has to be written."

Brown, 25, revealed during a court appearance in September that she would soon undergo surgery to try to correct her hearing. Obviously straining to hear questions, she refused to discuss the possible cause of the problem.

Tacopina said Monday the prognosis from that surgical procedure is still undetermined, but "hopefully it (the condition) is reversible. She has to undergo another surgery."

Meanwhile, Judge Melissa Jackson adjourned Brown's case until Dec. 23 when, Tacopina said, he expects it will be resolved. Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, is charged with misdemeanor assault, attempted assault and harassment.

Brown has rejected at least two misdemeanor plea deals that would have let her avoid any jail time for allegedly assaulting two nail salon workers on Aug. 29, 2004, in a fight over payment for a manicure at Bloomie Nails in Manhattan's Chelsea district.

Prosecutors alleged that Brown, with a cell phone clutched in her closed fist, attacked and kicked one worker, and hit a second worker in the face.

Under the proposed plea deal, Brown would have pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and served 10 days of community service.

"I'm innocent," Brown said at the time. "I feel like I'm being railroaded."

Tacopina said they rejected the offer because he wanted Brown to plead guilty to a disorderly conduct violation, an offense less serious than a misdemeanor.

Tacopina said in September that the complainants in the case, the nail salon workers, "don't want to proceed. This is a waste of their time, her (Brown's) time, and the public's time."

However, he said Monday that he also did not want to expose Brown to an easy civil lawsuit by allowing her to plead to assault. "We're concerned about the motives of others," he said. "She's been seen as a bull's-eye for a quick payday."

Brown's latest CD, "Black Rose," is expected to be released soon.

DMX GETS HIT WITH MORE JAIL TIME

Rapper and actor DMX is already serving 60 days behind bars for violating the terms of his probation from a road rage incident at John F. Kennedy Airport last year. SOHH.com reports that the rapper spent some time away from his Rikers Island prison cell on Wednesday (November 30th) to go to court to answer charges stemming from a traffic accident he was involved in last spring, which resulted in another car hitting a unmarked police car after DMX's Dodge SUV slammed into it.

DMX pled guilty to driving with a suspended license and Criminal Court Judge George Villegas fined the rapper $500 and sentenced him to a seven-day term, which will run concurrent with his current jail term.

DMX was initially placed on probation last December after he pled guilty to reckless endangerment and acknowledged he was on Valium when he crashed his SUV into a gate at Kennedy Airport during a road rage incident. He was sentenced to a conditional discharge, which meant he needed to stay out of trouble for a year or face jail.

He failed to stay out of trouble. Since being placed on probation, DMX has gotten two traffic violations, one for driving 104 miles an hour near his home and one for the aforementioned accident with an unmarked police car and another vehicle.

Ok, well I have been reading the comments posted on our reviews and such, and decided that I had to put my 2 cents in on this situation.

I was reading the review of the J.D. Crap...yea I said it CRAP and was reading the comments posted by J Prince on how he thought we at HHH were biased on east coast music.

It just seems to me that the bullshit east coast joints that nobody else listens to excpet niggas on the east coast get a pass. My example is AZ's sorry album. Yall gave that shit a 4 meanwhile yall gave that Boyz in the Hood joint a terrible rating? - J Prince

First, I think that the Boyz in the Hood Album is hot carl as dirty likes to say. I dont care how many songs jeezy was on the album is crap. In the words of Samuel Jackson in Juice "Just because you pour syrup on sh*t; Don't make it pancakes"

So this takes me to what this news blurb is all about. J Prince wrote that we dont talk about TuPac and how he thinks he is the greatest ever. So I got to thinking. I wonder what peoples top 5 MCees of all time would be.

So post your comments with your Top 5 MCees ever.

    Ill start this up.

    R.Motions Top 5 MCees EVER

    1. Jay Z -
(Although people will argue this one to death, I believe that no other MCee with the exception of Tupac has changed the face of hiphop culture like Jay Z has.)

    2. Biggie -
(With 2 albums, he managed to become the King of NY [yea i know...he has more than 2, but i dont count those other albums, cause he was already dead - R.I.P])

    3. TuPac-
(It took me a long time to come to realize what a genius this man really was. Dirty would play Pac all day at SU, and i would be like...fudduck outta here with that BS. But after I heard that "The Don Killuminati" album, I was an instant fan and had to run back and cop some older stuff that Dirty was playing.)

    3. Big Pun-
(What can i say about this man. First off R.I.P fam. I had the honor of knowing him and an honored to have known him. This Latin Rhyme animal put Latinos in a new place in hip-hop...i know i know...we always had latinos in Hip-Hop, but nobody brought that fire like Pun.)

    3. Cam'Ron-
(Hate him or Love him, I think that Cam has been so consistant with progressing his skills that he has entered my top 5 mcees of all time. Even when you are thinking to yourself...oh lord this beat is horrible, or he a clown, You cannot under estimate the sense of pure lyrics that he spits.)

ha ...i know you are all mad at my 5th pick...so what....its my list....some of you are probably like...where is Nas, Common, KRS, Rakim....the truth is, that i dont want to get into all that right now..i would be typing for days...and truthfully...im tired of typing right now...

so just throw up your Top 5 picks and lets get this discussion rolling...

NELLY AND JERMAINE DUPRI DO THE RIGHT THING

Nelly and Jermaine Dupri were in New York City last week for the 3rd Annual Hip-Hop Summit Award Dinner, where they were both honored for the charitable work that they've done in their communities. The two men were allegedly also very charitable while visiting a strip club, where they spent $10,000 in one night.

The New York Post's Page Six reports that the two started feeling guilty after spending so much at the strip club, so they decided to match that amount in toys, which they later delivered to needy kids.

In related news, Jermaine Dupri has a lot to be thankful for this year. After leaving an executive position with Arista Records to go over to Virgin Records, it appears he made a shrewd business move as his first signees Dem Franchize Boyz have the Number One rap song in the country, "Oh I Think They Like Me." Dupri told us: "You know, the Franchize record is the Number One rap record right now, Number One R&B single in the country. It's my first group signed to Virgin. I'm super-excited because I'm over there now. I know a lot of people didn't think it was the right move for me, but now they see I had a vision to do what I had to do."

The producer also shared his thoughts on helping Mariah Carey make a successful comeback. He said: "You know, I'm happy for her. We had a big year this year, and it's just really getting started. She had a re-launch, and we got a new single, 'Don't Forget About Us.'"

  • FANTASIA RESPONDS TO RUMORS AND HEARSAY

Vocalist Fantasia recently spoke out about a number of issues surrounding her, including the High Point, North Carolina couple that runs the fantasia's lies website, her alleged illiteracy, and rumors of beef with tour mate Keyshia Cole.

Fantasia's book Life Is Not A Fairy Tale relates her experience growing up in High Point, where she said there wasn't much opportunity. A local couple protested, creating a website disputing the singer's dim view of their hometown. Fantasia told The Birmingham Times, "I tell people that book is my life. I'm speaking on how I saw it and what I went through. I'm not speaking on nobody else.... The book, it wasn't for High Point, it wasn't for my family, it was for people who have been through some of the same situations and they took it and turned it into a whole 'nother thing."

The American Idol winner has already denied being illiterate, a revelation that came from her appearance on the ABC's 20/20 newsmagazine show on September 30th. The singer clarified, telling the Alabama paper that she's "not a strong reader" and thus was embarrassed to read aloud in front of people.

Currently wrapping up her last weeks opening for Kanye West on the Touch The Sky tour, Fantasia added that the media and others were trying to pit her against singer Keyshia Cole. Fantasia denies there was any problem between them. "We see each other, we speak. She go up and do her thing, I go up and do my thing. And I guess people was trying to make it into that," says Fantasia of the perception that Cole had disrespected the American Idol winner during a TV interview.

Fantasia added, "I try to get along with everybody and my momma would kill me if she found out I was out in the streets actin' stupid."

Fantasia -- whose debut album Free Yourself has been certified platinum -- is currently on the singles charts with the title track.

  • CASH MONEY RECORDS HOSTING DINNER FOR EVACUEES

Cash Money Records has been handing out 25-pound turkeys in New Orleans every Thanksgiving for the last five years, but following the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, the label has decided to do a little more this year. Cash Money Records will host a sit-down dinner today (Tuesday, November 22nd) for 2000 evacuees and residents who were displaced by the hurricane at Southern University.

Cash Money Records co-CEO Ronald Williams, who lost his home during the tragedy, said, "So many of our friends and family were devastated by this terrible tragedy, we wanted to do something a little more elaborate this year to address the needs of the people who have lost so much and might not have the resources to remember the holiday. We want to show our love and support for these courageous survivors who never, ever give up."

Bryan "Baby" Williams added, "We're just happy we are still able to provide our annual blessing this holiday. It's in that spirit that we want to show our friends and neighbors how much the Cash Money family cares about nurturing this community and rebuilding New Orleans."

GOTTI LEGAL DEFENSE TEAM ATTEMPTS TO DISCREDIT WITNESS

On day two of Irv and Chris Gotti's federal money-laundering trial (Thursday, November 17th), the prosecution called to the stand Donnell Nichols, a former employee of Murder Inc. SOHH.com reports that Nichols testified that he remembered seeing reputed drug kingpin Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff drop off a plastic bag which contained a shoebox full of money. Chris Gotti afterwards allegedly ordered the label's bookkeeper to cut McGriff's company Picture Perfect a check. According to Nichols, this kind of exchange occurred at least four or five times.

Nichols also testified that he delivered a two-way pager to McGriff and that the kingpin also allegedly received checks for the Ruff Ryders label.

The defense attempted to discredit Nichols by painting him as a liar. Defense lawyer Gerald Shargel also brought up the fact that Nichols was fired from a job for downloading porn and that he's been homeless. The attorney also called Nichols out for allegedly stealing from Murder Inc. Records and lying to people about his job title.

Shargel made his most convincing argument when he asked Nichols about his testimony that he saw Chris Gotti counting $70,000 from a shoe box in fives and tens and then put the money in rubber bands. The attorney gave Nichols a shoebox and $70,000 in prop money and asked him to put it in the box. When he was obviously unable to do it, Nichols attempted to backtrack by saying he never specified denominations, but Shargel then read his previous testimony, which included denominations.

Damon Dash, 7 Aurelius, Black Child, and Caddillac Tah were all at the federal courthouse in New York City to show their support for Irv and Chris Gotti.

  • DAMON DASH STANDING BY HIS FRIEND IRV GOTTI

Damon Dash has been showing his support for his friend Irv Gotti by showing up for the first two days of the Murder Inc. CEO's federal money-laundering trial. Dash told SOHH.com, "I can't believe the charges, but it all comes out in the courtroom. He seems ridiculously innocent of what he's charged of. What they're accusing him of...that's not characteristic of him."

Dash and Gotti have been friends for many years, as Gotti worked on Jay-Z's 1995 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and even served as his tour DJ before landing an A&R gig at Def Jam Records, where he later facilitated the joint venture deal between the label and Roc-A-Fella Records.

Dash said, "I started my career...I got a lot of information from him as far as advice. Irv was Jay's DJ. We was on the road for a long time together...we spoke about our plans as entrepreneurs in a very legal way."

He added, "What I know is Irv, he's a good guy...he's a friend, we need to stand together. As a culture, we're supposed to stick together."

Irv and his brother Chris Gotti are facing allegations that they used Murder Inc. Records to launder money for reputed drug kingpin Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff. If found guilty, the two brothers could face up to 20 years behind bars.

  • Hierocast Episode II: A Call To Arms

Tajai Helms Latest Hiero Podcast, Features Exclusive Casual Freestyle Inspired by Hurricane Katrina

In the latest edition of The Hierocast, Souls of Mischief MC Tajai takes the reins. Episode II features an exclusive Casual freestyle track, tracks from the East and West Coast Hiero crew, and a track from Central Cali's rising star Shake Da Mayor.

Casual's freestyle provides a window into the talented MC's mind. The seed for "From the Town to Liberty City" sprouted as Casual pondered the disaster wrought by hurricane Katrina and how people affected by it were forced into survival mode. With the prospect of a similar disaster in the Bay Area not unlikely, Casual had this to say, "If a similar state of lawlessness occurred in Oakland, I'd do whatever it takes to protect myself and my family. It's called "doing your Grand Theft Auto thang".

Tajai feels the podcast is further evidence that the music industry is being changed quickly as a result of new forms of digital distribution. While commercial radio may not be very Hiero-friendly, the Hierocast allows the crew to reach their audience in a more personal way. "I think it's a great way to connect with our fans old and new... And Radio better watch out!" Episode II also showcases tracks from O.C., Pep Love, Tajai, and Shake Da Mayor.

50 CENT'S MOVIE PULLED AFTER FATAL SHOOTING

Shelton Flowers of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, was shot and killed at the Loews Waterfront movie theater in West Homestead, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday night (November 10th) while waiting to see 50 Cent's new movie, Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. Pittsburgh's Channel 4 Action News reports that concession workers reported hearing two shots just before Flowers collapsed near the theater's videogames. Flowers was shot in the thigh and chest and later died at UPMC Presbyterian hospital.

A police officer on duty at the theater heard the shots but did not see the assailants. So far, police have reports of two men running towards the main entrance after the shots were fired, but no arrests have been made.

Get Rich Or Die Tryin', which was showing on two screens at the theater, has been pulled while the police complete their investigation.

Waterfront Slaying Investigated; Movie Pulled; 50 Cent Responds

UPDATE: Appearing on ABC's "The View" Friday morning, 50 Cent addressed the Waterfront shooting, saying that he is sorry for the loss of life. However, the rapper said neither he nor his movie are responsible, because the incident was a dispute among adults, not children.

WEST HOMESTEAD, Pa. -- Gunfire in the Loews Waterfront movie theater killed a man Wednesday night, West Homestead police said.

The victim, identified as Shelton Flowers, 30, of Wilkinsburg, was hit in the thigh and chest. He died later at UPMC Presbyterian.

Allegheny County police said a confrontation broke out between Flowers and three other men in a bathroom. Employees at the concession stand reported hearing shots, and Flowers was then found near some video game machines.

Two men were seen running out of the main entrance after the shooting, witnesses told police. Another man left through the rear doors.

Police said nobody has come forward to identify a shooter, even though the building was busier than a usual weeknight, with the 50 Cent movie, "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" debuting on two screens.

The Waterfront theater has pulled the movie until the investigation is complete, WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Sheldon Ingram said.

    Shelton Flowers
The West Homestead Police chief told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that an off-duty officer was stationed at the theater -- which is unusual for a weeknight -- due to the showing of the movie.

The chief said the officer did hear and respond to the shots. Right after that, Flowers crossed the officer's path and collapsed.

Flowers had just left the 9 p.m. showing of the 50 Cent movie.

"We are sad and disappointed about the events that took place Wednesday night," Loews Waterfront management said in a statement. "However, we want to assure our patrons that this was a rare and isolated incident. Our customers should be assured that the security of our patrons is our highest priority and we will continue to provide a safe atmosphere for everyone."

    ---------------------------------

    ---------------------------------

R.Motions: Now I pose the question, are movies like this fueling the violence that is occuring in our urban communities or is it just entertainment and needs to be received as such?

    HipHopHavoc would like to know!

FIREWATER TO BE LAST CALL FOR THA ALKAHOLIKS

FIREWATER TO BE LAST CALL FOR THA ALKAHOLIKS

NEW AND FINAL ALBUM STREETS IN EARLY 2006

(November 10, 2005, Los Angeles, CA) ─ Waxploitation Records and KOCH Records announce the release of Firewater, the fifth and final album by Tha Alkaholiks. Firewater is slated for a February release and will precede an Alkaholiks ‘farewell tour’ – a final party for their fans. The group will retire after the release of Firewater and the final tour.

“Knowing Firewater was going to be our last album made us very, very focused,” says E-Swift. “We knew there was never going to be a second chance and we owed it to our fans to put everything we could into it, right here, right now.”

“We all have different goals and things we want to do as individuals. It’s important for us to move forward and find new challenges,” says J Ro.

"We were party animals for over a decade. Times are changing,” says Tash. “We’ll still get together once in a while to do a song here and a song there…but this is going to be it as far as albums go.”

Over the last decade, few artists have been able to crossover with both commercial and underground audiences as seamlessly as Tha Liks have done. Consistent fixtures year-after-year in the fickle hip hop world, Tha Alkaholiks (Tash, E-Swift and J-Ro) are considered by many to be as influential as any artist in hip hop. Classic Alkaholiks singles like “Make Room,” “Daaaaaam!” and “Likwit” are still radio and mixtape staples.

“In some ways, the release of Firewater is bittersweet,” says Waxploitation Records founder Jeff Antebi. “It feels like the end of an era, but Tha Alkaholiks are exiting with an incredible legacy to follow them. It’s not often an artist can pick their own exit, at the peak of their game.”

Tha Alkaholiks have released four critically acclaimed CDs: X.O. Experience, 21 & Over, Coast II Coast, and Likwidation which have featured a ‘who’s who’ of hip hop’s elite including Nas, Busta Rhymes, Madlib, Xzibit, Q-Tip, Kurupt, The Neptunes and Ol’ Dirty Bastard to name just a few.

Three early samples from the new album are available online. The song “Get Into It” can be heard at www.alkaholiks.com and the Danger Mouse produced “Chaos” can be heard at www.myspace.com/alkaholiks . The single “The Flute Song (LaLaLa)” can be heard at www.waxploitation.com

    Track Listing:

    01. The Flute Song (LaLaLa)
    02. Turn It Up
    03. Chaos
    04. Faded
    05. Drink Wit us

  • 50 CENT WILLING TO HAVE A SITDOWN WITH NAS

50 Cent may be changing his ways. Last week, he publicly stated that he may be receptive to ending his feud with Jadakiss and even working with the rapper in the future, and now he's saying that he'd be willing to sit down with his former mentor Nas, who during a recent interview credited himself for showing 50 Cent his first Bentley. The rapper told MTV.com, "Nas is right. I did see he had nice stuff at that point. It was later I started feeling different about him. He's wishy-washy sometimes. We had our little differences, and we been saying little stuff to each other on record, but I don't have nobody trying to hurt Nas."

50 Cent's latest jab at Nas is on his new single, "Window Shopper." The rapper explained, "Now if he tried to buy the stuff I buy, he'd be window shopping. He hasn't progressed to the point I progressed. He failed to set up a situation where he can feed his people."

50 Cent added, "Where's Jungle and Whiz and the rest of the Bravehearts? (Lloyd) Banks' house cost $2 million in Long Island. Tony Yayo had a million dollars after taxes in his account when he got out of jail. I provided for the people that were around me. (Young) Buck's house don't cost $2 million, but you wouldn't know it. In Nashville, the property value is different."

But the two men may soon settle their difference, as Nas has publicly said he would like to sit down with 50 Cent, who said, "We'd have to sit down and have a conversation for me to be cool with him. Other than that it'll stay where it is."

50 Cent's new movie, Get Rich Or Die Tryin', opens on Wednesday (November 9th). The soundtrack hits stores today.

50 CENT TRYING HIS BEST NOT TO CHANGE

50 Cent has successfully made the transition from rapper to owning his own empire. The rapper will further solidify his reign with the release of his new movie, Get Rich Or Die Tryin', on Wednesday (November 9th). While people may point to his affiliation with Eminem and Dr. Dre as the keys to his success, if you ask the rapper, it's all been based on his upbringing in the streets of Queens, New York.

50 Cent said: "They say things you go through make you who you are. You know, my experiences and everything about me comes from South Jamaica, Queens. You know, I grew up there 27 years. I've lived a lifestyle that they would consider a successful lifestyle for the last three years."

The rapper added: "You know, but I've been that because I've been writing about my experiences in South Jamaica, Queens. You know, so I don't actually want to change much, but anyone who tells you that money don't change you just didn't make enough."

In addition to the movie, the rapper will release the soundtrack for Get Rich Or Die Tryin' tomorrow (Tuesday, November 8th). The set features contributions from Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Olivia, Mase, Mobb Deep, Nate Dogg, and M.O.P., with production by Dr. Dre and Hi-Tek.

50 Cent is currently promoting two singles from the project, "Hustla's Ambition" and "Window Shopper."

  • JAY-Z AND OTHERS LOOKING TO BUY 'THE SOURCE'?

The Source magazine has been fighting financial issues for some time, and now it appears that Jay-Z, Warner Music Group chairman Lyor Cohen, and former Interscope Records exec Steve Stoute might be making a play to purchase the mag. SOHH.com reports that the trio's attempts to purchase the magazine were recently revealed by two former Source employees and a source at Jay-Z's Def Jam Records.

The Source is allegedly $18 million in debt after it failed to repay a loan from Textron Financial Corp. and could be facing bankruptcy proceedings. But it is unclear if potential buyers would purchase the magazine from its co-owners, Dave Mays and Ray Benzino, or creditors. A source told SOHH.com, "Dave and Ray own 82 percent of The Source. Anybody who would want to make a deal would have to come to them."

Harris Publications, the company that publishes The Source's rival, XXL, is also potentially interested in purchasing the magazine.

The Source had no comment when contacted for the story.

50 CENT SAYS NEW MOVIE ISN'T ENTIRELY TRUE

50 Cent's feature film debut, Get Rich Or Die Tryin', hits theaters next Wednesday (November 9th). While the movie is very similar to his life story, 50 Cent recently explained that it isn't entirely true, especially how his mother dies in the movie. The rapper said: "Loosely based on my life story and it's about 75 percent factual. So in my mother's situation, someone put something in her drink and then turned on the gas to cut off her oxygen."

The movie also includes a scene where 50 Cent is shot nine times, which really did happen in real life -- although slightly different from its big screen reenactment. In the past, critics have blasted 50 Cent for using the incident to solidify his tough guy image, but according to the rapper, if it wasn't for the media, the incident would never get brought up. He said: "Different media outlets, different publication and things, they've heard the story over and over. They never hear me say, 'You know what, I've been shot.' I don't never bring it up. It always a question that they found some significance in and ask me questions about it."

50 Cent will release the Get Rich Or Die Tryin' soundtrack on Tuesday (November 8th).

On November 22nd, the rapper will release his new video game, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, for PlayStation 2. The new video game will include three new songs by the rapper as well as several exclusive remixes. MTV.com reports that in all, the new video game will include 53 songs from 50 Cent, 20 from G-Unit, 10 from Lloyd Banks, 10 from Young Buck, and four from Tony Yayo, plus 47 tracks from Sha Money XL and 15 videos from 50 and G-Unit. The entire collection is available to players at any point in the game; all gamers have to do is have 50 Cent access his G-Pod.

  • CAM'RON OPENS UP ABOUT SHOOTING

Diplomats leader Cam'ron, who was shot in Washington, D.C., on Sunday (October 23rd) while sitting in his 2006 Lamborghini, is also starting to wonder whether the incident was a carjacking. Authorities are investigating several theories about the shooting, including that it was a possible attempt on the rapper's life. Cam'ron told MTV.com, "I don't think anybody would do a carjacking that randomly in front of that many people. For Howard (University's) homecoming, a bunch of people is outside."

While the rapper sat at the light with his convoy in another vehicle, an unidentified man jumped out of a burgundy Ford Expedition and attempted to pull open the rapper's door while waving a gun. The assailant fired several shots at Cam'ron and at the pink Range Rover which was behind him carrying his entourage.

The rapper explained, "So many (fans) been hopping out on me all weekend, I seen (the assailant) in my peripheral, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. When he hopped out (of his vehicle), I seen him waving something. I wasn't sure if it was a CD or whatever. Then I looked when he came in front of my car and seen it was a gun. I thought he was an undercover (cop). I'm like, 'Money is waving a gun in front of a lot of people here.' I'm looking, like, 'What this dude is bugging for?' He's pulling on my car door, like, 'Get out.' I'm like, 'I'm not getting out, you bugging.' Then he shot through the car. That's when I stepped on the gas."

Cam'ron was shot twice in the right arm and once in the left arm. He still has no feeling in his right pinky or ring finger due to one of the bullets hitting a nerve.

The rapper, who drove himself to Howard University Hospital after the incident, added, "I always move cautiously, like somebody is after me, anyway. Not saying somebody is after me, but you gotta realize you in a position of power. It's like the modern day...It's like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. I hate to use them as examples, but they both got murdered and they both were great leaders. Right now, (rappers are) in a position where people like Minister Louis Farrakhan and Dr. Ben Chavis call us up to speak to the youth. So when you a great leader in a position of power and about to go to a higher step, which I'm about to do, you always keep an eye open. I never put anything past anybody. I don't know if it was a hit, I don't know if it was a carjacking. Until everything comes to light, it's too early to (make assumptions)."

Cam'ron, who will be releasing a new movie and album, Killa Season, in February, concluded, "I'm not gonna be a prisoner of my own fame. This'll never change the way I move or the way I act."

    LA-based Hip-Hop Group Move.meant Releases 2nd EP

In the first week of November Los-Angeles based Move.meant will release a follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut EP with a second EP entitled, Good Money.

Move.meant came into being shortly after Spider (DJ) introduced longtime friend Just (Producer) to Sonoma State University classmate, Champ (MC). In 2003, the trio released their debut album, the Move.meant EP on their own label, Wax Paper Records. The 12" single from that album included "The Rebirth" and "Heather," a narrative about a pregnant 16-year-old girl as told by a former friend. Both the 12" and album were widely recognized as two of the year's best underground gems.

Move.meant's sound ranks high above the average of most independent hip-hop groups in terms of overall music quality. Champ's distinct voice, intelligent lyrics, and blue collar sensibility set the stage for the crew's music while Just brings the boom-bap, no-nonsense production, and Spider brings solid skills as the group's DJ. Move.meant's sound incorporates early-90's aesthetics with a sense of honesty and humility rarely captured in hip-hop today.

Good Money is a collection of songs that reflect the lives of everyday people. The lead single "Good Money" is a track that speaks to anyone who has ever been broke, worked two jobs or had to struggle with finances. Over a walking bass line with 40's style clarinet ornamentals Champ reminds the people that we have the power to flip the system in the track "Str8UpNDown". "Move On" has that classic boom bap feel that urges us keep moving forward despite the challenges we may encounter. Over Spider's quick scratches and cuts Champ explains: " Lose the hatred, lose the drama, lose the beef / Find your rhythm, find your soul, and find peace." Move.meant strives to keep the bar up in hip-hop with original and intelligent songs anyone can relate to. This is music for the people. Good Money is available at your neighborhood record store and online now.

    Tracks Listing:

    1) Good Money
    2) STR8UPNDOWN
    3) Move On
    4) Problems
    5) Move On (Remix)
    6) Good Money (Step Fam Remix) feat. Trek Life, Blest, Crush One

Label: Wax Paper Records/ Outlook Music
    Distribution: Fontana/ Universal

  • NAS MAKING THE MOVE TO DEF JAM RECORDS?

Following Jay-Z and Nas's public reconciliation last week, reports have started to surface that Nas might be leaning towards signing with Def Jam Records. The rapper is a free agent and has hinted that he may be interested in leaving Columbia/Sony Records, where he's recorded his entire career.

Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid shared his thoughts on Nas possibly joining the Island Def Jam roster. Reid told MTV.com, "I don't know if I have a comment for that. I'll tell you what, I absolutely love him. He's an amazing artist. I have loved him and supported him for years. He's been a great supporter of mine. And obviously he and Jay-Z have a mutual respect and love and admiration for each other. So let's just see. I really don't know. Let's see what happens."

Reid also shared his thoughts on Jay-Z's first year as president of Def Jam Records. He said, "I liken him to Michael Jordan, in that winning is just an innate part of his personality. But he also knows what to do and what not to do: A part of winning is knowing what you can win at. Being blessed, talented, and all of the above doesn't hurt either."
